I am incredibly honoured to have the opportunity to speak on behalf of my classmates. Today, we unite for one of the final times, to celebrate our experiences, part with our past, and encourage each other to go out and face the world with bravery.Graduation is turning the last page of a novel, and delving into the sequel with anticipation. It is hopes and goals and dreams, which have been formed from experiences of the past. Up until this point, our stories have bared countless similarities. We have all experienced the frustration of attempting to learn long division, struggled with the pronunciation of big words, he fear of cooties, and the heartache of being in first grade, when you’re convinced that the cute fifth grader who pushed you on the tire swing at recess is your soulmate. We have experienced loss together, and middle-school drama that once felt like the end of the world. We have faced disappointment, and we have stood together as each of us attempted to figure out who we were and who we are meant to be. Together we have also experienced joy, and the satisfaction that accompanies getting an A on an exam. We all know the type of laughter that ties your stomach into knots and steals the breath right out of your lungs. We have grown into young women and men, and written our stories, together. It is here, today, where we part ways, and begin work on our own novels, the rest of our lives promising to be the product of the decisions we have already made, our accomplishments, our desires, and the choices we will continue to make inthe future. At this point, I would like to extend thanks to our parents. As children, we begged you to check for monsters beneath our beds, and kiss our bumps and bruises better. When we fell from our bikes, you applied bandages with loving hands, and set us back on our feet, convincing us to try again, and always refusing to put the training wheels back on, because you had faith that we could do it. From the very start, you have made it your goal to prepare us for the inevitable future. You have taught us valuable life lessons, and encouraged us in our endeavours, never failing to show pride in our accomplishments. Although we might not always admit it, we are incredibly thankful that we had you to depend on, while growing up. I would also like to thank the many teachers who have devoted their time to teaching us everything we need to know, in order to face the world and succeed. You have become so much more than educators; you have become role models, and more importantly, you have become friends. Some of the best memories we hold as students were created within the confines of your classrooms. I, for one, will never forget a single biology lesson, thanks to Luch's inventive teaching techniques, and I will always remember the simple act of reading Shakespeare aloud, Chomany whispering in the background, encouraging us to read with more expression, adding ghost sounds, and flickering lights to set the atmosphere. Escaping the limitations of high school to chase our dreams, wherever they may take us, brings the promise of new friends, new experiences, and numerous opportunities, which we will all be eager to take. However, as we move forward in our lives, we must always remember the people and experiences that helped shape and define us. We must remember the friends that laughed with us, cried with us, and stood with us while we experienced the best days of our lives. We will continue to learn, outside the walls of W.R. Myers, however, what we learn is not nearly as important as who we learn it with. The purpose of life is not to discover all the secrets of the universe; it is to find happiness, and happiness is simply unachievable, unless you are surrounded by good friends, and a supportive family. Our future is quickly approaching, and many of us are still uncertain of our destination. We cannot predict where we will end up ten years down the road, but we can move forward with the knowledge that we are all capable of great things. Some us will fall in love, build families, while others will escape into the work force and pour their knowledge into a career that will drive the economy, and perhaps, some will even go on to change the world. We are all capable. If there ever comes a moment when you begin to doubt your abilities, look back on your past experiences, and remember your accomplishments. We have already made it so far, and our lives have just barely begun. Be courageous, and imaginative. Continue making mistakes, as long as you continue to learn fromthem, and, in the words of Confucius, “wherever you go, go with all your heart.” Thank you. We have been together through loss, hardship and realities that are catastrophic to the teenage psyche. But through these hard times each and every student’s character and ability to cope with difficult circumstances has developed and helped us grow into the strong individuals that we are as we leave this school. Myers is full of dynamic personalities that are each unique but share similarities that are connected through our high school experiences. Although we have faced difficulty together we have also known our fair share of good times; from classroom laughs to sporting triumphs to the friendships that we have built that will last a lifetime. Myers has i been a crucial part of our upbringing and has grown each student into ! a person that is ready to face the challenges of the world. The annual publication of the students of W. R. Myers High School Taber, Alberta. (Volume 2013-2014)pdfW. R. Myers High School WO tho Welcome to Wherever You Are Graduation Ceremony ^^ ^^ Graduation Banauet 'Prinejbafs f^e&fress Johanna Kutanzi Ladies and Gentlemen, Good Morning! Welcome to the W.R. Myers High School Cap and Gown Ceremonies of 2014! I can’t believe how fast the year went, that I am once again standing in front of our graduating class - you are looking fine! I am happy that you are having this moment. I can’t believe the weather! Generally, on graduation day, our only complaint is that it is too hot - especially for the boys in their handsome suits later in the afternoon. Boys - we have good news ... Last Saturday, I was cleaning out the closet in my daughter’s room - and that, by the way, should be a job for someone who has done something desperately wrong and is being punished for some act! Anyway, we decided to take a break - go for a walk. It was snowing! The toques came out, the mitts should have come out - so, if we look on the up side of things, it is not snowing today! For the last two weeks or so, if I ran into someone and they know that I am connected to Myers, there was generally a comment along the line of, “Grad is coming up soon.” And so it was on Tuesday, as I took the kids for an evening haircut, that I ran into a dear friend. I was commenting that I had not yet written my speech for grad and that really all I want for the kids is for them to be happy and well. How do you turn that into a speech? And that truly is, speaking on behalf of the staff of W.R. Myers High School, our wish for you - be happy and be well. Now, if being happy and being well simply happened on their own, then I could just take my seat and wish everyone an outstanding day. That is not the case. It seems like everything takes at least a bit of work, and even something as seemingly simple as being happy and well, requires thought, time and attention. You have many journeys ahead of you - hopefully most will be joyful and exciting and some may, will be, difficult. Though it all, know yourself, treat yourself well and never sell yourself short - that would be such a shame. You know, and I know, that were Brett here today, and maybe he is, he would want only the very best for you - he would look at you with that convincing smile, that twinkle in his eye, maybe tilt his head a bit - and want you to be happy and well. Brett sat right in front of me in LA enrichment, probably because of his hearing he sat in the front in a lot of his classes, and I remember that look very well - usually there was a touch of mischief in there as well. I hope that you, our graduates, feel well-prepared to plan and navigate the next step of your journey. I hope that you will carry forward moments of pride, struggles that have turned into accomplishments, memories of giggles and giddiness, friendships and true and genuine value of who you are and all you contribute. I hope you remember, always, how important you are - to your family, to your friends and to yourself - there is tremendous value in you. And because of that you are wished a lifetime of being happy and well - of discovering and nurturing your talents, of committing to work or study that is meaningful to you, enjoying the moments as they present themselves, of loving and being loved. To all the parents today - how are you doing? Another milestone! I was at my daughter’s kindergarten Mother’s Day Tea on Wednesday - same daughter with the messy room! The tea was beautiful! Mrs. Anderson was kind enough to put together a video of moments throughout the kindergarten year - and the really good thing was that I found out I was not the only sap out there - the rest of the Moms were crying too, as we watched this video capture the moments of fun and growing up for our children. And I thought about you - the parents of our grade 12s - and the love you have for your children, the insane pride we have as parents and the bumps, hugs and hoorays along the way. I hope that you too enjoy this moment. Thank you so much for all you have done for your children along the way - kids need their parents and they could not have done it without you. And, Happy Mother’s Day! I want to end with one more story. Last Friday afternoon, I took some time to make sure I actually had something nice to wear for today. After shopping, I ran into a former parent and get an update on two of his children and a nephew as well (Jance, Alex and Tom are all doing well!) - we chat for a minute and continue on. Then I go to confirm my hair appointment for this morning - the kids that spend 200 days with me know that hair is not a big priority. Anyway, I run into Jenny Meyer and say to her, “Hey, your Mom was able to find something pretty for me to wear and now I am getting my hair - I’m set.” Without missing a beat, Jenny said, “This town will take care of you.” This town will take care of you - that is what we call home! Remember that you have a home, that you are valued in this community and your hometown, as represented by everyone who made it a priority to be here today, stands behind you, wanting you to be happy and well. Whether your next step takes you down the street, across the globe or somewhere in between (like PEI), please know that this is your home, you will always be Myers alumni and that we will always wish you well. As is customary, my final task is to introduce the class valedictorian. This year’s valedictorian has been a quiet and unassuming student, someone who goes about the work with a great deal of diligence and helpful curiousity. Over the four curiosityyers, there has been a consistent display of the most pleasant manners and the presence of a warm smile. And if you talk about farming, he really lights up! Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome our valedictorian for the Class of 2014 - Ben Noble.^O J ^ l/a/ee&iforfan Ben Noble Good morning, well I’m glad that everyone was able to find the l-Rena. That’s exactly how we want to start Grad off with, 1000 tickets with arena spelt wrong. Right now all my teachers are going “Oh Ben, people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones!” And they are right; I have no room to talk about spelling mistakes. In fact when my elementary school teachers find out that I am the valedictorian they will probably say “Well he must have finally learned how to spell!” The fact is I’m still working on that one! We learned a great deal since that start of our education 13 years ago, it is hard to fathom that we started out in kindergarten sitting on the floor learning that glue was not edible, I’m pretty sure Cole Nakamura learned that the hard way, and we began to slowly progress through the school hierarchy. We went from top dogs, to the bottom of the pile when we transferred to middle school. It was at middle school that many of us had our first slow dance and learned that the opposite gender was not really all that bad. We also learned that you can actually make too many posters. We looked on at the High school kids desiring to be more like them, thinking that they knew exactly what was going on. Then we became the high school kids and we learned that we were wrong, we didn’t actually have everything figured out automatically. In high school we learned the significance of a driver’s licence and the friends that it brought. We learned so very much at school, whether it was academic or life lessons, we always learned something new. And it was due to our teachers that we learned anything at all. I think that I speak for everyone when I say thank you to our teachers. I would personally like to thank the staff at W.R. Myers for your incredible dedication, and your commitment to your student’s education. Additionally I would like to thank you for your guidance, your friendship and the role you have played in our lives. Most importantly, I would like to thank our parents for their support, their tol§rance and their understanding; it cannot be easy to raise a teenager. Without parents and teachers, none of us would be who we are today, and none of us would be where we are today. I am honored to be chosen as your valedictorian, but it is also a great responsibility because I feel that I have the obligation to say something meaningful on the day that marks our transition from children to adults. Things are going to drastically change when June arrives, we are all aware of the challenges that we will face as we head out on our separate ways. Life will not always be simple or perfect; our class knows this better than most. It is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge one of us is not present today, and that person is Brett Forchuk, I do however believe that you would all agree that he is certainly with us today in spirit. Today is significant because it indicates that we are about to set out on diverging paths. Edmund Hillary once said that “It is not the mountain we conquer, but rather ourselves.” What he means by this quote is that when one sets out to accomplish a goal, it is not the physical obstacles we face that impede our success, but rather the limitations we place upon ourselves. Like climbing a mountain, life is going to require skills, tools and companions to achieve success. Before you are able to climb a mountain you must first educate yourself on the topography, and the climate of the mountain, you will need to train long before you are able to attempt to climb. You will need people to travel with, people who you are able to trust and depend on, this being said you will have to be trusted and depended on as well to reach the summit. Einstein said “Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.” I believe if you combined the two ideologies together, you would be able to conclude that it does not matter if you achieve your goal of reaching the summit if to do so you have to impair someone else’s journey. Your character is what will remain long after you have reached the apex. Sometimes you will need to be humble enough to allow your companion to lead rather than yourself because they know the path better than you do. And sometimes you will need to admit to yourself that you are not ready to continue the climb until you have rested. An individual is only as strong as their skills and their mindset allow them to be. So improve your skills and get in the right mindset because the only limitations you have are the ones that you allow to affect you. With that in mind climb a mountain, chase after your dreams because it is better to fail at something, than to succeed at doing nothing at all. Even if you don’t make it to the peak it doesn’t matter, because life is not about the destination it is about the journey. Go out into the world, conquer your own doubt, conquer adversity, turn your limitations into strengths, and climb your mountain. Congratulations, graduation class of 2014! I wish you all the best, God bless you, Thank you. This can be accessed through the Milo Library website @ https://milolibrary.ca. The East Milo Juniors, initially referred to as the Milo-Queenstown Local, was the first chapter in the Junior United Farmers of Alberta, created in 1919. The UFA formed the Junior Section to "train those between the ages of 14 and 25 in citizenship and leadership", as well as to provide opportunities for social interaction. This led to the development of University Farm Young People's Week, a time for group members to be together at the University of Alberta, where they convened an annual meeting of their provincial executive, and participated in debates and track meets, as well as other sporting events. Through pie and box socials, dances and bridge parties, the East Milo Juniors raised funds which were used to purchase sporting equipment and to send delegates to the annual convention. Proceeds from the Basket Social in December, 1934, were used to support several charitable causes, including the Red Cross. The Juniors also hosted and attended lectures and art displays, hosted local debates and an annual banquet, produced a newsletter called "The Tattler", created and exhibited handicrafts, put on concerts and Chautauquas for the community at large, and participated in community clean-ups and plantings. In 1932, the East Milo Juniors, along with the Arrowwood Juniors and the Johnny Canucks formed an organization called the Marquis Athletic Club. The club hosted an annual sports meet with competitions in baseball, softball, track and field and basketball. CUSTODIAL HISTORY: Jack Bushell, East Milo Juniors secretary, 1933-1935 SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of 2 original scrapbooks, 1933-34 and 1934-35, and one bound, combined copy made sometime later. The handwritten volumes reflect the years' activities of the East Milo Juniors, and include biographies, photographs, financial and other reports, drawings, stories and puzzles. The Milo Library & Archives had a recent visitor, Erin Hoar who is the Archivist at the UFA head office in Calgary. After giving her a tour of our building, I had asked her if she would research the UFA sponsoring the Milo Racemeet as is rumoured, prior to the Lions Club who started in 1955. She was unable to find that information, however she sent the following article from the U.F.A. July 15,1922 publication about the Queenstown Juniors and their accomplishment of building a community hall. It was originally built in the center of the district, just north of where Old Milo was. Later it was then taken apart and moved into Milo where it eventually became the IOOF Hall on the lot where the current recycling trailer resides. A, L-1 ■Br r ■- •»-* July 16, 1922 Queenstown Local a Centre for all Community Effort How Adverse Conditions Proved Incentive to the Creation of an Active and Efficient Organization and the Development of the Spirit of Co-operation—The Queenstown Juniors and What they Have Accomplished. The big hall was crowded with people, mH the seats were taken, all the standing room at the back of the scats and in the doorways was filled. The Queenstown Junior XJ.F.A. were giving a demonstration of their year’s work in physical training and folk and aesthetic dancing, and all their parents, brothers and sisters, friends and neighbors, as well as many people from surrounding districts, to the number of about five hundred, had come to see. A dozen boys and young men stood ready at the front of the hall, straight, lithe young fellows, holding themselves with ready, cheerful confidence, The horizontal bars were placed ready, and at a word from the instructor the drill began. One after another, the boys swung over the bars, under one and over the next, swung up on their arms, vaulted over the vaulting horse with a dozen different "stunts" all carried out with promptness and ease. Enthusiastic applause greeted the conclusion of their program, and the curtain was drawn from the stage for the girls’ performance, a series of dances typical of the various countries in the British Commonwealth, interspersed with choruses by all the young people. Hornpipes, jigs, reels and fancy dances were shown by single dancers or groups of two or three, in appropriate costumes. Little maidens with long curls or sleek, bobbed hegds danced with dainty lightness, and their elder sisters were like graceful fairy queens, delighting the audience. The concert ended with the singing of "0, Canada,* and the Junior yell. Result of a Year's Hard Work. This capable and finished performance represents a year’s work. Every Saturday afternoon In winter, and every Saturday evening in summer, the Junior Local meets, and each meeting begins with physical drill for the boys and dancing and club swinging for the girls. They are fortunate In having efficient instructors who have been willing to devote a Kt deal of time to helping them. t. Frank Harvey, who served in the CJS.F. during the war, and is also the secretary of the U.F.A. Local, drills the boys, and Mrs. A. Alston, who has had some years’ experience teaching dancing and physical culture and directing pageants in American cities, directs the girls’ exercises. Both instructors say that they find the work intensely interesting, and both are keen advocates of the value of physical training for young people. That it gives grace and poise was evident, and that the young people like it was shown by the regular attendance at all meetings. It was also maintained that the feeling of perfect command of one's muscles has a wholesome mental reaction. Many Other Activities. But the work of Queenstown Junior Local is not confined to these activities. Once each month they have a business meeting, and once a month a social meeting. In winter a light supper is usually served, with a nominal charge of ten cents. Th® Local publishes a monthly newspaper, after the style of school The strength of the U.F.A. as an educational, economic, social and political force, lies In the Locals, and the building up of active, vigorous local units' has always been the primary and fundamental task of members of the organization. The Influence of the Locals Is commensurate with the service which they can render tn the com-munities in which their members re-side, by becoming the sources of In. splration for local effort and the centres of social life. To paraphrase the words of a well-known sociologist, Mr- H. P. Vowles, who was quoted in the last Issue of "The U.F.A.". •’without a broad sustaining base of knowledge and effort tn all of us,” no elected representatives can hope to handle the wider aspects of our business and national life. Upon this page la published an article descriptive of the methods em. ployed tn building up one local unit and of the successes which this unit has achieved In Senior and Junior Branches. No two Locals are confronted by exactly the same problems, and no two have been built up by ex. actly the same methods. The expert, ences of a number of other Locals which have been conspicuously successful will be outlined In subsequent articles, and It Is hoped that those may be suggestive and helpful to Locals and district Associations throughout the Province. publications, and an innovation which met with warm approval was the writing of a serial story’ by the members in turn. The newspaper and installments of the story are read at the meetings. Speaking and debating are also encouraged, and a regular feature is for the president to call on various members for impromptu speeches, sometimes on current events and sometimes on humorous topics. The programs at the social gatherings are often impromptu, too, and are usually very successful. One such impromptu program took the form of a farce, ’Tn a Photographer’s Studio.” Such a Local and such a record are only possible through the whole-hearted co-operation of the young people, their parents, the teachers of the schools in the district, and the instructors. And indeed it appears that the co-operative spirit must be strong in the Milo community. The history of the Queenstown Local, and its community work for the past twelve years, make a background that largely accounts for this. Accomplishments of Queenstown Senior Local. The Queenstown U.F.A. Local was organized in 1910, and found a good deal of work lying ready to its hand. Mr. John Glambeck, who was for several years secretary of the Local, said

Since receiving provincial status in 1905, she has risen from a sparsley populated, undeveloped territory, to the most prosperous province in our country. At the turn of the century, when our province had its humble beginning, she was considered a minor province. In fifty years she has risen to prominence and become the land of opportunity. On this her fiftieth anniversary we take a certain pride in saying "Alberta is our home." May this province, which is our home, rise to greater prosperity in the years to come. ROBERT TESHIMA Page Six TABER HIGH SCHOOL ©ur ©nurruDr-fetirral iefeft* sct&ea Vincent Massey was born in Toronto, Ontario, on February 20, 1887. He was educated at the University of Toronto and Oxford University in England, and returned to Canada to take an active part in Canadian life. From 1926 to 1930, Mr. Massey served as Canadian Minister to Washington, setting a pattern of harmonious feeling between the United States and Canada. In 1935, Mr. Massey was appointed to High Commissioner for Canada in London where he strengthened diplomatic relations. Then on January 25, 1953, the King, on the advice of the Canadian Government, appointed Mr. Massey as Governor-General of Canada. He was the first Canadian-born citizen to be appointed Governor-General. The family name of Massey has for one hundred years been associated with the encouragement of Canadian Culture, and Vincent Massey has ably upheld the family tradition. He was the first president of the Chamber Music Society, and later he worked in the formation of the Toronto Symphony. Vincent Massey made great contributions to Canadian Art in his presidency of the National Gallery of Canada. He is the only man to head both the National Gallery of Canada and the National Gallery of London. Probably the most outstanding of his contributions to Canadian life, however, is his chairmanship of the Royal Commission on National Development in the Arts, Letters, and Sciences. After two years of intensive investigation, the Commission's report was tabled in the House of Commons on June 1, 1951. It covered every phase of cultural life and will undoubtedly have a great influence, and one day bring into being a truly great Canadian Culture. HOYT PRICE "DAWN" Page Seven ^J\&id.£.n£s ^A^ssmqE I would like to congratulate Beverly Young and her staff in editing 1954-55 edition of the Taber High School "Dawn." It is through the efforts of a few that the entire student body is able to have pleasure in reading the yearbook. As the Dawn comes off the press, we see pictures of our daily associates that which, in future will bring back happy memories of our school days. The value of a yearbrook such as this increases, rather than decreases, with age. Once again I would like to commend the yearbook staff on a good job well done, and hope that the students of this school will follow our practise of recording the year's activities in the years to follow. In closing, I would like to say that it has been a pleasure working with the teachers and students, and I wish the students graduating all the success in the world. This is the first year for the Junior Red Cross Organization, but we have been successful in a number of projects. We sponsored the Hallowe'en Ticket Drive of the Taber Schools, in which about two hundred dollars was cleared. We sponsored the Poppy Sales, in which approximately thirty dollars was collected. The Junior Red Cross members have given valuable assistance to the school library. We carried on advertising and sale of tickets for H.M.S. Pinafore, and directed a successful Assembly at which Dr. Uprichard, accompanied by Miss Nora Nixon, were the main speakers. The prevalent idea is to escape from the realities of a chaotic world or to remove the conditions that cause discomfort of any kind. Escape too often leads to tragedy. Removing the factors of discomfort may be beyond your control. You must realize that the world isn't going to move over for you; but it will give you a chance to find a nitch into which you can wiggle — and then you can begin to climb." There isn't any finality in life—when we spell it with a capital L. You can follow through as time will allow, but realize that no matter where you stand on a plateau there is a peak beyond. Keep the inquiring mind with which you are blessed; don't let anything in life scare you. Say what you think. Love what you love. Despise what seems wrong to you and you will one day attain the heights of freedom of mind, and body. From the speech to the graduands, by Rev. Geo. D. Young, B.A., B.D. Rex Anderson - B. Y. U. The group was divided into approximately four equal teams. The awesome team 4, led by Mr. Koski, were the fastest at passing the bucket from the ballpark to the hilltop. Therefore, they were also the first to fill their 5 gallon bucket and win the event. The next event, the log race, saw teams 4 and 2 tie. The team had to carry their log from the ballpark, through the camp area, and then across the river. The first team to get 25 members across won. The four teams had a contest in which team #3 emerged victorious. To end it all, the school split into two teams for the last tug-off of the day. To everyone’s astonishment, the rope broke leaving the competitors piled like dominoes. Top left: Clayton Young’s version of a rubber duckie. Top right: Neil Powell pours the winning bucket. Students and teachers got in and found out how much fun pep rallies can be. Contests, plays and presentations have all been part of making our pep rallies the greatest. One of the memorable pep rallies was the one at the beginning of our 1982 school year. During this, the grade 12 victoriously won the pyramid contest and the grade 11 won the rowdy flag award. The P.E. 20-30 class also performed their aerobics for us. The Christmas assembly was just as fun. Presentations were made to teachers by none other than Santa Claus. This pep rally ended with the whole student body joining in and singing Christmas carols. Student pep rallies this year have really been a success and have shown that W. R. Myers has “SPIRIT!” 14 15 Back Row: Richard Pierson, Mark Brewin, Jerry West, Cliff Hudson, Arthur Hashizume, Neil Powell, Tony Fiedler, Allen Bodner, Miles Lowen 5th Row: Cam Ireland, Casey Carlson, Steven Harris, Scott Paun, Brad Litchfield, Mark Francis, Don Boyle, Derrick Krizsan, Rodney Langkopf, Bernie Krahn 4th Row: Rod Sassa, Todd Pickerel!, John Strugari, Byron Gilbertson, Ron Wagner, Gary Allred, Dick Eto, Jim Hendricks, Trevor Tomlinson, Keith Rawleigh 3rd Row: Roxanne Kurio, Barbara Edwards, Nancy Hoogerdijk, Betty Roth, Sandra Cole, Lorene Edwards, Devany Veres, Ann Russell, Holman, Cara-Lee Ireland, Jody Christensen, Arlene Strugari, Michelle Nielsen 2nd Row: Lynn Fletcher, Lisa Cannady, Pam Callan, Audrey Bullock, Shelley Vanderwal, Sharon Hamilton, Sharon Valgardson, Lori Popilchak, Karen Pyrch, Marissa Enns, Judy Miyashiro Front Row: Kathy Maloney, Linda Fekete, Sheila Evanson, Cathy Evanson, Myrna Ostercamp, Karlen Danforth, Jody Parry, Rhonda Ferguson, Darlene Shaw, Wanda Lund, Lorna Pauls Grad '83 — Struggling around the ice arena for the 80th time for the Skate-a-thon; Having your mother buy 8 boxes of grapefruit to sell your quoto; Filling out nosy questionnares; Practices of every kind — Pasting on a smile for those endless pictures; Hoping not to spill any food on you at the banquet; Finally realizing, happy but sad, that it’s all over and everything is now history. The diplomas we will receive attest to the proficiency and application during our high school years. With the support of those people gathered here this evening, we have attained the credentials to go on to meet the new challenges which lie ahead of us. Yet this evening is not without a touch of sadness. This is the last opportunity we shall have to meet as students and it may well be the last occasion at which all of will be present. Because this may be our final meeting together, it might be well to look over the road we have just travelled. Three years ago we entered high school perhaps with a trace of hesistance and uncertainty about our immediate outlook as students. Gradually we put to rest those uncertainties and went on to acquire the education and training that we had sought. Another group of benefits, not so easily measured were also acquired along the way. I refer to such things as the ability to get along with one another. To understand better the word “sportsmanship”. To have clearer the appreciation of the rewards which result from perserverance and application. Those of us who, perhaps a bit skeptically entered this school three years ago, have learned today that there is a reward for effort, and that only real effort produces a genuine reward. Success and achievement is seldom the product of just one’s own efforts. Therefore our thoughts turn to those people who contributed the most to our individual successes. I refer of course to our teachers and parents who often had to scold, conjole, console, and through it all lend guidance and support. Perhaps our expressions of gratitude can best be manifested in the coming years by whatever accomplishments that may become ours. Soon it will be time to pursue new goals. We will face them with optimism, with courage, with determination. Each one of us will soon begin a journey alone toward a chosen task in life. The journey may not always be without its difficulties and temporary setbacks, however, I am confident the virtues and principles which have been bestowed upon us in the past will serve as well in the future. Shortly the vacant places we leave behind tonight will be filled by others, just as eager, just as anxious, just as determined to succeed. It is our sincere wish that all the pleasant and valuable experiences which have been ours, will in due course be theirs. When their turn comes may they be as sorry to leave as we are this evening. This might well be termed the year of Com-prehensives and Computers. On the one hand we are confronted with a set of external exams and significantly higher requirements for obtaining a high school diploma. The greatest impact will be felt by the lower-achieving students who may have to accept some alternative other than the previously anticipated diploma. On the other hand, we see some exciting possibilities for incorporating computer technology into instructional and administrative procedures. During this time of economic restraint, we are faced with a need to carefully examine priorities in our school program and to select those activities which will provide most educational benefit to our students. This assessment is reflected in decisions as to how budget dollars are expended for supplies, equipment, and student travel. Special events have included the Day at the Park, the trip to Europe, and presentations by Rick’s College and the Covenant Players. The Graduation Committee has again worked diligently to prepare for an important and colorful annual event. Our inter-school sports programs have once more been highly successful, thanks to the tremendous efforts of our students and their coaches and to substantial community support. The fine arts programs in music, art, and drama are a very worthwhile complement to our academic core. A stage band for students with special interests, and scheduled in addition to regular band, has made exemplary contributions to the school. In home economics, industrial arts, and business education, our students have received practical knowledge and skills applicable to direct job opportunities or in preparation for further training. The new Vandalism Reduction program has succeeded threefold — property damage has decreased, students are assuming greater responsibility for their behavior, and Students Council has benefited from the money saved and contributed by the School Board. Under the direction of C. Hart, the students in our small Journalism class have included in their productions a weekly column for the Taber Times, several editions of a school newspaper, and the Yearbook itself. We extend sincere thanks and appreciation to this class for their outstanding quality work and performance. — D. Kilback VEGAS BILLIARDS AND ARCADE Weekdays 11 am — 11 pm Sunday 12 pm — 8 pm 43 R. The starting six players were all returning players, consisting of: Sharon Hamilton (captain), Audrey Bullock, Rhonda Ferguson, Jody Parry, Pauline Hooge, and Connie Gow. The reaminder of the team were: Lynnece Kerner, Carol Desabrais, Myrna Robinson, Sheila Fujimagari, and Suzanne Vibholm. Our manager this year was Cara- Lee Ireland. Our team started this year off on a good note by winning the preseason tournament. Many tournaments followed, which we also had a great deal of success in. We won the pre-season, post-season, league, and zone tournaments. We placed second in all three Medicine Hat high school tournaments. The season was topped off by us going to provincials and capturing third spot. It has been quite a few years since a girls team from Myers has gone to the provincial tournament, but with the help of a great guy we made it. That great guy is Dennis Fujiamgari, our coach. We would like to extend a special thank-you to him for all the time, effort, and support he gave us. Without him we wouldn’t have made it. We also appreciated all the support from students, teachers, and the parents, we had a good year and a great time. “Thanks, Fuji” Chinook Gardens Restaurant Specializing in Chinese Cuisine Licensed Dining Room Ph. 223-2632 Banquet Facilities — Take Out Service Taber 51 52 MYERS VOLLEYBALL 1982 1982 was supposed to be a poor year for Myers — but somebody forgot to tell the players. Neil Powell was the only returning starter; we had no returning setters; and only nine people showed up at the beginning of the year. Of this nine, one couldn’t handle the practices and quit after the first week, and another was forced to quit early in the season. This left seven players, one more than absolutely necessary, only 2 grade 12’s, 3 grade 1 l’s, and 2 grade 10’s, one returning starter and no setter did not look good. Dick Eto became an instant setter. Setting 200 balls a day and having the same expected of him as we would an experienced setter gave no room to be anything but good. Cam Shields started as a typical grade 11 — good skills but easy to psyche out — not mentally experienced. He caught heck every game for the first half of the season. At the end he could probably take on anybody. Jody Slavik was a grade 10 player who was short. All he had was guts, good coordination, and tremendous strength. Jody got chewed out more than anybody on the team, but he took it, learned and had a tremendous first year. Rob Layton was the surprise I needed. Grade 10’s don’t normally play. The game is new to them, and they don’t have the size, strength, and skill to compete. Rob was tall, strong, coordinated and learned amazingly fast — the best grade 10 player I saw this year. Dave Anderson was a grade 11 player. He started the year with one year of practice under his belt and not one inch taller than grade 10. Nobody expected him to hit, but he could. He was a hustler with a good team attitude. Neil Powell was my only starter. I expected a lot of Neil. When Neil was hot, we won. When he was off, and that happens, we struggled. Neil’s big improvement was in attitude. He was a team leader in practice and was positive to the game all year. Dwight Harris started a year late — his grade

This is in spite of the pressures associated with trying to obtain an academic education such as writing tests and completing assignments. What makes these years so memorable and significant are the many and varied activities which take place in schools, along with the relationships developed with classmates and teachers. Within the pages of this yearbook is the history of this past year at Myers High, which you will wish to treasure over the ensuing years. It is my sincere hope that as you recount the experiences of the 1991-92 school term you will remember it with fondness and appreciation. Special thanks goes to Mrs. Klemen and the yearbook staff for all of the time and effort which was expanded in creating such an interesting and exciting yearbook. Your contribution is greatly appreciated. Myers High School. The administrators, teachers and students are busy implementing the action plans that were developed as part of the school’s strategic plan. Our re-cycling program, journalism class, tree planting program, grade-level meetings, policy formation, and budget committee are only a few examples of the progress we have made to achieve our mandate. Excellence is never achieved alone. Success can only be achieved by teachers, students and parents working together to make our school the best school it can be. Thanks to all the students and staff who make this school the good educational and social experience that it is. As in all years, there are a few who find fault with almost everything associated with school who have never taken the time to see what it can be like with a positive attitude. The rules are to help you attend and learn and obtain what will be a valuable asset — an education. We have good recreational programs; our Students’ Council is active in improving the quality of social life. To those who took advantage of what we offer, I’m sure your past year at Myers High School was a positive experience. Our hope is that you use what you have gained to further your life experience. Fun Day The annual Fun Day was held on the afternoon of Friday, September 27. Pamela, Shirley, Car-ley, Kristie, Dawn, Donna, and Shauna all enjoyed the lunch provided. Then everyone moved to the dunk tank where Jerry Swap enjoyed getting Del soaked. The traditional van cram was enjoyed by all who participated. Jason Pack and Marty Jesper sen, our boy’s sport’s convenor and president, crammed the van with Grade 9 students, who thanks to the Grade 12’s didn’t stay dry very long. Once everything came to an end, Cory Nelson and Jeff Thurston went sliding in the wet grass. I would like to thank Mrs. Klemen for all the help she gave us, and you the students of W.R. Myers, who make this book possible and to Dave Schritt from the Taber Times, who lent us his negatives. This year the book is different from any other year. Being in Grade 12,1 won’t be able to return to do this again, so I want to encourage anyone who would like to join the yearbook staff to do so. It is rewarding, but requires lots of work. Thanks to my fellow students in the Journalism class: Jana Anderson, Nicole Vayro, Kristie Vanderwal, Georgina Driedger, Karen Laurie. It's easy to believe that the rich and famous are born well...rich and famous. Not so! On the way to being famous...Gwen Stefani worked at Dairy Queen, Madonna was fired from Dunkin' Donuts, Brad Pitt handed out flyers wearing a chicken suit for El Polio Loco, Rachel McAdams was a server at McDonald's and Beyonce was swept up hair in her mother's salon. There are jobs you will have before you 'make it' too. Some you will enjoy. And some - not so much. On my way to becoming a teacher I was a waiter, a landscaper, a tree planter, and a bartender. Some of these jobs I liked and some I hated. But ALL of these jobs brought me to the profession I love and shaped who I have become. At W.R. Myers High School we are proud of being a school where every student can find an avenue for success and in being part of a community where everyone in the Rebel family strives to find the best in themselves and others. As Christian Larson said, "Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle." Remember that you are the star of your own life and that, with hard work, your dreams will become reality! Take care, Ken Pon Principal Wow! What a year! I chose "REBEL RESILIENCE" as the yearbook theme this year as I thought it was rather fitting given our current 'COVID-1 9' situation. Some of you are already VERY RESILIENT, while others may feel like you are not. One thing is for sure - you can always WORK on becoming MORE resilient. Here are 10 ways you can work on becoming more resilient: Have the courage to be imperfect Take time for yourself Sign up for that course, join that club Be active every day in as many ways as you can Spend time with people who make you feel good Laugh out loud each day Invite your neighbor (friend) over for a cup of tea (chat) Do one thing now that you've been putting off Focus more on things you can control Remember, this too shall pass (~https://wayahead.org.au/get-the-facts/building-resilience/) Thank you to all those who gave me a big smile (or at least didn't run away) when I put the camera in front of your face! I apologize to those teams I missed getting photos of (that actually had the opportunity to play). Because this year is unlike any other, I also decided to change up the color scheme from the traditional red/black/yellow! I would love some feedback on this decision (love it/dislike it etc). A huge shout-out to a stellar group of grade 9's who helped me with the yearbook in June (Madisen and Bryden O'Connor, Kiernan Gyepesi, Will Evanson, Madison Reid, Heston Bevans and Allen Clements). Thank you specifically to Bryden O'Connor for creating the color graphic used throughout the yearbook. Some of the quotes found through out the yearbook were from the survey you filled out in the spring, which in, most cases, does not have the author information and therefore simply states the grade level the quote came from. All other quotes with Author Unknown" were found online and in most cases didn't have any author information either. In any case, my hope is that they will either put a smile on your face, make you go 'hmm' or possibly even take time to pause and reflect on the message being shared. But very thankfully, and in true Rebel Spirit, we made the most of the situation and were able to organize and provide our student-athletes with a few opportunities to participate in sport. The Rebels made teams and practiced as much as they possibly could in football, volleyball, cross-country, golf, basketball, and curling. Unfortunately, a few of our traditional sports were not able to get off the ground in the Spring, but hopefully that will only fuel the fire of the up and coming athletes for next season! We want to give a big thanks to all those student-athletes and coaches who committed to one or more of our teams during these tough, unprecedented circumstances, and a special shout out to all the Grade 1 2 student-athletes for all of their years of dedication to High School Sport! Myers Concert and Stage Bands were unable to perform this year due to COVID, but we were lucky enough to still be able to play our instruments. Vince Gassi, a composer from Toronto, was commissioned by the W.R. Myers Band Parent Association to write a piece for the Concert Band. The band students met with Mr. Gassi via Zoom in October to talk to him about the piece and the writing process. He completed the piece for us in January and we began working on it. Again the band students met with Mr. Gassi on Zoom for him to listen to us play and give feedback. But unfortunately due to the COVID restrictions, we were unable to premier the piece. Hopefully, next year we will be able to play Tomorrow Shines Soon.
