TITLE: Milo Mutual Telephone Company fonds No.: MMT DATE RANGE: 1934-1967 EXTENT: 10 cm of textual records and other material ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY: In the mid-1930s, as part of a series of economy measures, Alberta Government Telephones turned over many of its rural lines to local co-operatives, while continuing to set and oversee standards of maintenance and construction. The first telephone co-operative in the area was Lake McGregor Mutual Telephone Company, established in November, 1934, with initial shareholders required to take 25 shares, at 1.00 each. An initial meeting to create a telephone co-operative east of Milo was held in late May, 1935. Following this meeting a canvas was made of prospective subscribers, and with the commitment of 31 individuals, Milo Mutual Telephone Company was organized in June, 1935. Shares were offered at $32.50 each, and it was agreed that the board would be able to "...access ail shareholders on a proportional basis for necessary labor to reconstruct and repair lines." In April 1964, the three area mutual telephone companies, Lake McGregor, Queenstown and Milo, decided to amalgamate, and operate as Milo Mutual Telephone Company. In June 1966, Milo Mutual Telephone Company decided to support a proposal that their operations be taken over by Alberta Government Telephones, and an auction was held in October of that year to dispose of the assets of the company. SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of minute books, financial statements and ledger pages for both Milo Mutual Telephone Company and Lake McGregor Mutual Telephone Company (including pages from the time of the merger), individual account records and a set of Telephone Working Instructions (cl936). There are also six laminated blueprints and line maps. The fonds has been arranged into the following series: Minutes, Financial, Account Records, Telephone Working Instructions, Blueprintsand Maps. Come inside, the elevator is on the right. Get in, and with your elbow, push 3. When you get out. I'm on the left.. With your elbow, hit my doorbell." "Grandma, that sounds easy, but, why am I hitting all these buttons with my elbow? "What........You’re coming empty handed?" A Sicilian grandfather is dying, and calls his grandson to his side. "Guido my boy, I want to give you my chrome plated .38 snub nosed revolver so you will have something to remember me by." Confused, the grandson says "But grandfather, I don't really like guns. How about you leave me your Rolex watch instead?" The grandfather painfully sits up in bed. "You listen to me boy. Some day your going to be running the family business, and have a beautiful wife, lots of money, a big house, and maybe a couple of children. And then you come home early, and find your wife in bed with another man. What are you going to do? Point to your Rolex watch, and say "Time's up'?" Remember, I before E except after C! This you may not like, but if you once consider the fact that our advertisers pay the "lion's share" of the expense, you may be a little more lenient. Through the publication of this book we have tried to give you a fair indication of what the students and the school year of 1949-50 were like. Page Four ^Pz^idsni: i ^dsmazk^ Though the Students' Union (woiting for the students to return to school from harvest) was a little slow swinging into action, by the first of October the executive had been elected. I extend my thanks to these members of the executive who so willingly co-operated with me and assisted me in carrying out the many Students' Union activities. This year a great step forward was taken when we adopted the constitution, a thing which had been non-existant prior to this time. Throughout the General Assembly meetings much discussion about the clauses of the constitution took place—a fact indicative of the interest students felt in a well-defined constitution. I admit that our House System during the post year was by no means operated perfectly, although many of the wrinkles were ironed out, still a few remain. It is our sincere hope that next year and in the years to come, keener participation and co-operation from the students will be forthcoming so that our goals may be achieved. For example, at times certain students exhibited irresponsibility and disrespect at our social functions. I trust, however, that the majority of the students appreciated the efforts of the House Social Committees and the Executive. I am proud to say that financially, we have, at the time of writing, a credit bank balance of $250 made possible by the proceeds from the Students' Union sponsored dances, and the Variety Concert. To the Advisor, Editor and Staff of cur Yearbook, I extend my compliments for their work. Willingly they gave their time and effort in making the Yearbook materialize. In closing I would like to thank the students and the members of the Staff who gave of their time and effort to make the Students' Union a success. DON FLEMING. We want to learn how to distribute the best that is known and thought throughout the world, in order that we might start anew a current of fresh ideas. Friendship and friendliness is as much a part of education as is skill in technical courses or lines of work. To be educated one must be a cultivated individual who is an asset to society, though he is not too strongly tied to it because his education has set him free from it. There are many signs by means of which one might be judged as to his education. Scholarship along the lines of one's chosen preference and its related fields. Good manners, fitting and becoming the individual and his station in life. Education demands that one is capable of conveying thought to others. This power is acquired only by extensive reading and study of good books along with leading a just and upright life. An educated individual must have a reverence for those things demanding reverence. An educated person must be devoted to things that are true. Modesty is an essential requisite of the educated man. Last, but not least, education implies the self-discipline of oneself. There are many traps and pitfalls along life's way. Many of these are avoided by the educated man. His learning will not set him aside from society but will be a means of welcoming him into that society. The educated person will see so many sides to a situation that he will not take any of them and so will avoid argument and will not take a decided stand. It is only by being entirely broadminded that one can give his greatest service as a citizen of a democratic country. Finally, the educated man will never be content with what he has, because he will be aware that in this fast moving day and age he will soon be left behind. Education is not that which it put one during a few short years in school. Education is a difficult and life-long undertaking. It is the hope and desire of the Taber High School to turn out graduates whose enlightenment has at least begun, who will in some small way be in a position to take a stand on important issues. It is hoped that their influence will be felt over an ever-widening sphere and that all will stand firmly for the maintenance of a just peace. Page Seven'JL CZ ^. £. ^taff MR. AOKI (B. Comm.) Page EightBy DAN SAGA We are rapidly approaching, what to us is not just the close of another school term, but the close of one of the most important parts of our lives; for we shall be leaving school, some to further advanced education, others to pursue employment. But whatever the future has in store for us, the knowledge which we have gained during the past twelve years will prove invaluable. We are now experiencing that difficult phase of life during which we must wisely choose cur life's tasks. Doctor, teacher, farmer, engineer, stenographer, no matter what field we select our past education will serve as a stepping stone to our careers. Along with cur regular school work, we have learned to make friendlier associations with our fellow students, and by participating in various sports, we have learned a sense of fair play. Bringing to mind the students of those dreadful war years, we realize we are indeed fortunate to have come so fat. The majority of wartime students, those who had to take the places of their fathers or brothers at home, and those who joined the armed forces themselves, were handicapped in their quest for a better education. We are deeply thankful for the opportunity which has been presented to us. But by no means are we at the end of our education for the path of learning has no end. As we continue up that path, school day memories will grow more dear. And now that we must leave we are beginning to appreciate what school has meant to us. Teachers, who have had faith in our potentialities, parents, who have made sacrifices so that we might attend school, and citizens, who have paid the taxes to make our education possible, we sincerely pray that we will never betray your faith in us. So—thank you and goodbye T.H S. Welcome whatever the future may bring. Page Ten Jolane Chomany (Jo) "Don't Cry Joe" is her favorite song With a motto like that she'll get along. Page Thirteen After a long association with the 1950 Graduating Class I sincerely feel that we deserve what we have gained from the years spent together. Our crimes appear to be those of omission rather than those of commission. The fear was not that we would do wrong, but that we would do nothing. Yet we must have done at least a minimum for we have arrived at what is perhaps the highlight of our youth—the eve of graduation. At last, after twelve long years of school—we, the recruits of 1938, take our turn as the 35th class to graduate from Taber High School. Although I remember very little of our first four or five years of school life, I'm sure we were no more of a trial to our teachers and each other, than in later years. Up to and including Grade Eight was considered public school in our time and we were more or less deprived of the close relationship now offered by the Junior High School organizations. Entering Grade Nine seemingly changed our lives since we were then considered to be in High School. Besides this, it was in Grade Nine that we became acquainted with those who entered our school from country points, such as Wadena and Reliance, when the large school division was formed. From what I can remember, Grade Ten pased quietly and pleasantly but at the end our principal, Mr. L. G. Hall, who had seen us through several years of our schooling, left us for the rugged and cold territory of Lac La Biche. The following term Mr. H. B. Myers became our principal. Although many joined our ranks through the years, an almost equal number dropped out somewhere along the wayside. From among those we lost, some moved to other schools, others merely went to take up jobs, while still others entered married life. Also in July of 1948, we were saddened by the death of one of our classmates, Toshiye Sakiyama. Although we felt sorriest for Yasuko, her almost inseparable pal, we all missed her cheery smile and gay manner. In Grade Eleven we saw the Barnwell grade Twelves join our happy union and by the time we arrived in Grade Twelve the rest of Barnwell High School was inaugurated as a part of our school. As is customary and expected, the Graduates have been the leaders of the Student Body, as many of us held such executive positions as President, Secretary, Social Director, or were on the executives of the Houses. All in all I see no reason why we should not have enjoyed our school days, despite trials and troubles which we have inflicted upon our various teachers, and the burdens which these teachers, in turn, have inflicted on us. There are many memorable bright spots along the way, among which are the memories of the numerous constantly changing romances that began and usually ended, as well, before long. Others are the Initiations, the Sadie Hawkin's days, the laughs that sometimes crept into even serious study periods, the Proms, each one we were sure was better than the last, with the ultimate one of course yet to come—our Graduation Prom. Looking back now, there can be no doubt that we—the 1950 Graduates of Taber High School—have had a very successful school career as well as acquiring a bund

Much work goes into each Rally, and the rallies prove to be more work than dances, but it serves as a chance for the students and the teachers to raise school morale and have fun together. The Students Council this year has been fortunate every dance that has been put on has brought in a profit. The extra money that is made has gone into the rallies to make them the best we can. This usually means more candy to be thrown to the crowd, more prizes to be won, or more items to be purchased to be used for events. One of the things that Student Council has tried to do this year is have events that are unique and brand new to the school, ft seems that as the years go on there are events that seemed to repeat! We had the “tug-o-war” event, the “walk-man sin-a-long” and various eating or drinking events, ft has been our job to do our best in finding things that are new, and something that returning students, or our teaching stiff have never seen before. But as much ns the Student Council does, the success of the pep rallies depends solely upon student participation. The students coming together and having fun and getting into the events are what makes the rallies something that you will remember from W.R. Myers. Abeve left: Pretty in pink. Copyright Corner (December 2023)

1 Copyright Corner, November/December 2023 More on Debunking Disinformation About Educational Fair Dealing One of the topics considered In the previous column was how copyright advisors and librarians have been rebutting claims bordering on disinformation about why most of Canada’s educational institutions outside of Quebec no longer engage in blanket collective licensing for textual works. Among the examples I provided was “Don’t Blame Copyright for Declining Revenue. It Won’t Help Authors,” a statement by the Canadian Federation of Library Associations (CFLA). In a response, “CFLA Statement Contains Damaging Inaccuracies,” the Writers’ Union of Canada (TWUC) suggests CFLA’s statement positions authors and publishers as “attackers” of libraries, and views some of the sources relied on by CFLA to be “anti-copyright activists.” This is a troubling turn of events, because it threatens to make relevant facts even more difficult to discern for non-specialists, which, in turn, intensifies the challenge for policymakers to make evidence-based decisions on copyright law amendments or reform that are in the public interest. So I was deeply grateful to see another viewpoint offered up that provides facts and historical context for this debate on a blog entitled Fair Duty. The author, Meera Nair, Copyright Officer at NAIT, was inspired by the CFLA and TWUC statements to pull together a week-long series of posts on her independent copyright blog that draw on her in-depth knowledge of the social forces that have shaped the development of Canadian copyright law and the users’ right of fair dealing. I recommend this series to anyone who wishes to enrich their understanding of how educational copying has evolved over the past several decades. • Part 1 – Prologue • Part 2 – Uncovering the problem • Part 3 – Where did the money go? • Part 4 – Unkept promises, promises impossible to keep • Part 5 – The Canadian way • Part 6 – A better game • Epilogue Incidentally, when the U of L copyright office receives permissions clearance requests for book chapters to be used as course materials, we always check to see if the Library owns a multi-user e-book version or if such a version is available for us to purchase. Part 2 of the above series discusses three examples of Canadian books that might be used as post-secondary course materials – Downtown Canada (2005), Shut Up, He Explained (2007), and Jonny Appleseed (2018). It so happens that each of these three books is permanently available to U of L users through the Library in e-book format allowing for unlimited concurrent users. 2 More on Copyright and Generative AI Over the past month or so we have seen some further developments in the copyright and generative AI sphere. Most notably, the Government of Canada launched an online form-based public consultation in mid-October to invite comment from creators and users in four areas: • technical evidence (e.g., How does your organization access and collect copyright-protected content, and encode it in training datasets?) • text and data mining (e.g., If the Government were to amend the Act to clarify the scope of permissible TDM activities, what should be its scope and safeguards?) • authorship and ownership (e.g., Is the uncertainty surrounding authorship or ownership of AI-assisted and AI-generated works impacting the development of AI technologies?) • infringement and liability (e.g., Are there concerns about existing legal tests for demonstrating that an AI-generated work infringes copyright?) The relatively brief consultation period (December 4 closing date) allowed little time to set up a process to consult with the U of L research community in order to gather input on the complex issues identified in the Government’s online form. However, since questions and conundrums regarding copyright and generative AI will most certainly be with us for at least the next several years, I am interested in connecting with U of L researchers who are working with or creating generative AI tools regarding potential intersections between their work and copyright. Please reach out if you or any of your students are working in this area and would like to chat with me. If you would like to acquire a better understanding about the intersections between copyright and generative AI but are not sure where to start, I have added a new FAQ to the University’s Copyright website, Does copyright apply to generative AI? Spoiler alert: I offer no answers to the question! But this FAQ suggests some sources that provide overviews of the theoretical issues, current state of play regarding issues caught up in recent lawsuits, and two sources that take an “under the hood” look at just how generative AI works. As always, feel free to reach out if you would like some help with a copyright conundrum in your teaching or research. Other articles in this bimonthly column are available here. YEARBOOK STAFF SCHOOL ENROLLMENT 701 Editor: Elaine Wyrostok Assistant Editors: Linda Allen, Christine Williams Business Manager: Debra JensenTaber, Alberta MRS. ELIZABETH SOUTZO Princess Elizabeth Soutzo, Director of Nursing at the General Hospital, Taber, Alberta, passed away on December 23, 1963 following a brief illness. Mrs. Soutzo was born in Romania in 1888 and graduated from the Red Cross Nursing School Military Hospital in Bucharest, Romania in 1913. During her early education she became fluent in Romanian, French, English, Italian, and Greek languages. Mrs. Soutzo served her country and the nursing profession with distinction as a volunteer nurse (Red Cross) during two wars and was decorated for her service. During the years 1945 to 1947 she directed Red Cross relief services for ten provinces of Romania. She was well known in International Red Cross circles having worked with delegates from the American, Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian Red Cross societies. She was active in the "Save the Children Fund” and the campaign against typhus and tuberculosis. As a member of the Florence Nightingale International Foundation, she represented her country at the General Meeting of the Grand Council in London, England in 1946. With the change of government in Romania, she was forced to flee in 1948 and established residence at the Ricardo Ranch near Calgary. She spoke little of the hardships and the disappointments during the troubled years in her own country. Certainly she held no bitterness. Her interest in the profession continued in Alberta. She became registered in the A. A.R. N. in 1951, was active in her local Chapter, and Chairman of the A. A. R. N. Sub-committee on Nursing Service, 1961-1963. She served as Matron of the Little Bow Hospital, Carmangay, from 1951 to 1953 and in 1955 accepted the position of Director of Nursing at the 71 bed General Hospital at Taber. She held this position at the time of her death. An affiliation in rural hospital nursing was arranged for students of the Calgary General Hospital School of Nursing at the Taber Hospital while she was director. As a registered nurse and a director of nursing, the welfare of her patients was uppermost in her mind. She had unlimited energy, her desire to work was almost beyond her physical capacity. She set as a goal the accreditation of the Taber General Hospital. Constant work and enthusiasm for five or six years was this goal reached only a few weeks before her illness. At a memorial service in tribute to Mrs. Soutzo, Dr. J. S. Gibbings, Chairman of the Medical Staff, Taber General Hospital, stated: "I think that in our lives we could take a leaf from Mrs. Soutzo's book, that of setting an almost impossible goal for ourselves and working diligently to attain that goal. I feel that we of the hospital staff can give no more fitting memorial to Mrs. Soutzo than to continue to work to keep 'her' hospital accredited. She would ask for nothing more. Mrs. Soutzo will be greatly missed but as Alfred, Lord Tennyson said 'To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die'. Roberton Assistant Superintendent Secretary-Treasurer Mr. Gillespie Missing: Mr. Len Wright Mr. Sauter PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE At this time of year, the end of another school term, we look back at the achievements of a crowded and at times a difficult year. At the same time we look forward to the year's final examinations and beyond to the future, to our own future as individuals and to the future of our school. Our achievements are adequately catalogued in this yearbook, so I will single out only one for special comment. The first annual display of home economics, shop, and art work was an outstanding show of the breadth and depth of talent that our students and teachers possess. The girls' fashion display was a colorful, smoothly presented programme that delighted all who saw it. The range of projects made in our shop and classes was as impressive as the high standard of workmanship shown on everything from billfolds to boats. Our appreciation of the art exhibition is the best shown by the fact that several paintings are to be framed and hung about the school. The total effect of the three displays was extremely impressive, but already we are saying, "Wait till next May!" Next term will bring a number of other improvements and new developments, besides a bigger and better display. Phase one of our building programme will be completed; students will be making use of the facilities of the new south east wing and the language laboratory recently installed in the high school building. The new offices will be completed and our trial-run over. Plans will be completed for the new commercial department. Thus we shall be in a position to offer a greater range and a greater degree of specialization in non-academic subjects. Other programme changes we hope to intorduce will include the establishment of a complete guidance programme, the introduction of team teaching, and the use of a seven period timetable to give more tuition time in each course. The building and the programme are expanding and developing, but what of the student? What part will he play in the development of his school? The most essential need is for each junior and senior high school student to shoulder his share of responsibility for his own education. Far too often students take the easy way out; they 'pass the buck' and make any one of a number of stock excuses for their lack of success: "the teacher isn't any good", "the teachers pick on me", are commonly used. These are the excuses of the weak, the lazy, or the immature. It simply is not good enough to make excuses. If we fail, it is our own fault and the sooner we accept this responsibility the sooner Myers High will become the finest school in the South. This should be our goal; to reach it we shall need the fullest co-operation from each student, parent, and teacher. With such cooperation we cannot fail. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I would like to extend to Mr. Jepson, Mr. Semaka, faculty members, and the student body, my thanks for their respective efforts in making the past year a successful one -- socially and academically. I have enjoyed working with the student executive and in striving to provide W. R. Myers High School with many necessary school functions. I hope that you all have enjoyed the school year of 1963- 1964 and will then make the most of the years to come. To the future student executives go my sincere wishes that their endeavors to make the school an outstanding one are a complete success. RAY TOWLE GRADUATION ROMAN BATORSKI always excelled In everything he ever attempted Actually could never be expelled Because he sure wanted to learn. DAVID BENNETT toasted the teachers And thanked them for the swap "They gave us help with all we did While I was in the shop. ..." HEATHER BOWMAN, rather petite Was striving for Senior Matric Besides Math 30, she had to meet The problems of Bug 30. FLORIAN COOK had a fine time During his Senior year Between "herding" taxis and buses He was prepared when June drew near. GEORGE DERKSON worked and worked But all was to avail For when he wrote his June exams He found it impossible to fail. LINDA FEHR remained obscure From Myers "clubby" life But she used her talents, to be sure In the Glee Club, as a soprano. WILLIAM FERGUSON, "Bill we say Drove a bus for the board But this didn't hinder his ways He enjoyed the "escape" from school. SHEILA FISHER was bound to pass Cuz she always kept up with the rest of the class. Her musical talent was something to applaud, 'Til once in Math 30, she sang out loud. CAROLINE FRIESEN, a devoted Glee Clubber Continued to pursue her ambition Determined to go "Olds” next year Home Economics is the reason. JOAN GIBBINGS, ambitions high Is always found at her homework Found Grade 12 as easy as pie With no play and all work. GLORIA GOUGH, good at piano Was a devoted, hard-working gal But she always had time, that is as a rule To do all her schoolwork as well. ELAINE GRAHAM perked up a group With many nonchalant sayings As an active Glee Clubber, too, She still had the time for her school. DAVID GREENO, a Wrentham lad Added a lot to this school But complained that he had never grown Accustomed to the Math 30 rule. MARVIN GUENTER is a pretty good talker Always bribing Mrs. Thomas with candy But that didn't do him much good So he drove bus when it was handy. FLORENCE HALMA, a Barnwell product Devoted her time to cramming. . . For Bug, French, Math and the like Because Keyettes could not be forgotten. CATHERINE HAMMAN, a music scholar Plans on University next fall, Her Keyette work has been devoted But her work didn't suffer at all. DONNA HENDERSON, pert and petite Always presented herself very neat But this quality was only a booster To help with her plan for the future. LARRY HOOGE favored Math 30 He seldom went asunder, Now he expects an engineering degree For French is impossibly hard. JANYCE INGRAM, future nurse Had ambitions to be fulfilled So she worked her hardest to, of course Get out of Grade 12 first. IRENE ITO, with quiet aplomp Became the Queen at the Sweetheart Prom; But this didn't interfere with her school, She still gets pretty good marks as a rule. ALMA JENSEN didn't like tests And usually stayed away But he passed with all the rest Until one fine summer day. TRUDY JENSEN is always thinking University is her style, But Taber Bakery and horses, we're thinking Take up a lot of her time. KENT JESPERSEN is a basketball whiz A present Globetrotter star; And he does well in Key Club too His aspirations are fulfilled thus far. BARRY KINNIBURGH, the man with the vest, Comes to school tardy Like all the rest Who take it in their stride. NOEL KUNST leads a "quiet" life His ambitions surpass his instincts No doubt he's beset by emotional strife With Key Club on the brain. RONALD LAYTON seems pretty determined To get his education But Social 30 has not, he's found, Deserved his consideration. LAURENCE MARRIOTT, fairly good-natured, Was always out for a laugh; Also an active Key Club member, That's not saying much for his Math. KEN MC KIBBEN may drive a van, And quite enjoy the change; He'll probably turn to farming land But what’s this about trains? NORMAN MEYER kept to himself The best part of this year Like all well-trained students of MHS He anticipates college next year. GERALDINE MURPHY, a Keyette at heart, Always helped to do her part; With a friendly smile and a little hair bow, "Humph” was always on the go. CHERYL NELSON, a Meyers newcomer, Has certainly been well-trained here; She's going to University in the fall, Let's worry about that next year. NEIL NORDQUIST can't make up his mind About Engineering and Education, But as a Key member he'll find Intramurals aren't his vocation. CARL PARRY, "Buddy" to all, Came back to Myers High this fall; As Drill Leader of Taber Squadron, Air Cadets really kept him hoppin'. MARY PAWLOWSKI is quite a gal, She's kind and considerate as well; She takes a dim interest in Rm. 22, That's her home room, what else can she do? JUNE PERINI is a friend to all, But detests Bug 32; Cuz she's picked Junior College for fall, We know that she'll get through. ALEX PUPP, "Zolt" we say, Will be in LJC next year; We don't know what he plans to take But mechanics is our guess. RAYMOND "Jack” PYNE, migrating south, Will attend college in the States; And with his bus driver's know-how He's not liable to make mistakes. DORA REITSMA, our Social Convener, Always found time for Keyettes; She may be going to LJC or Excel at basketball yet. DIANA ROSS could not be found. At the time we took this survey; But we know she won't be around To suffer another year. ELEANOR SCHMIDT, our female class brain, Has personality hard to obtain; Her helpfulness to all she knew Made her the Keyette Treasurer, too, MARGARET SEBOK only took part In Glee clubbing this year But you could find her in the Gym At noons throughout the year. JOANNE SEKIYA isn't certain About plans for next term But her strong will can only make Her final decision firm. VALENTINA SHWORAN was loyal to Keyettes, We have never known of her To walk away from any work, She'll be a success for sure. LAURIE STUBBERT is always on hand With loads of good encouragement As Liaison Officer and Keyetter too Math 30 is her only predicament. BARBARA TADA has the artist's touch She does her work and rarely says much, Her marks indicate she is pretty smart, too Barb's sure an asset to Room 22. ROGER TESHIMA is an A-l type guy, A hard-working person with a Math 30 eye; As Student Union "moneyman" and Key Club boss. His departure will leave Myers High at a loss. CAROLYN TOLTON has one favourite pastime, Of sitting in Math class--it'H be the last time; Nursing is her ambition for the future, That is, if she doesn't stay around. RAY TOWLE, our number one guy, Takes Physics 30 to pass the time; He belongs to Key Club and... His friendliness is simply grand. ALBERT TSUJI, the teachers' pest. Has much to be acclaimed lest You get the wrong impression, but His marks, then ping-pong, are the best. HILDA VAN SPEONSEN, whose name is too long, To fit into a rhyme, excelled in school; It was her rule... To get to Keyettes in time. VICTORIA WRIGHT has made her place As a great pianist and singer. With University plans next term She'll probably teach for sure. ELAINE WYROSTOK, our Yearbook gal, Was the Keyette boss as well; She always had time for others. Leaving little for herself. VALEDICTORY MESSAGE Mistress of Ceremonies, Honored Guests, Parents, Teachers, and Fellow Graduands: A little more than a decade ago we began a new phase in our lives, a phase which was to take us through twelve years of education. We not only learned from books but we also gained our knowledge from our teachers, our parents, our friends and ministers. Words such as "honesty", "faith", and "respect" have become meaningful to us. We have learned how to get along with our fellow man, because without this we would have been lost in the world, for what is the world but a community of people. As we grew older, the meaning of life came closer to us. We learned more and more about what life really is. We have now reached the point in our lives where we must go forth to make our contribution to the world and with all the education and guidance we have received we must not fail those who gave it to us, let alone ourselves. As we build ourselves, laying brick upon brick, reaching upward, we look back and see the people who have laid the foundation. To our parents we will be forever grateful for their words of encouragement, their guidance, and understanding. To the teachers who through their perseverance and devotion gave us the knowledge; and to our friends who added so much enjoyment and championship to our lives, we are deeply in debt. And now this phase of our lives is coming to a close. All the familiar things that have been with us for the past twelve years; all the things we have taken for granted will be gone. But life moves on and so we too move on leaving behind cherished memories, looking with hope to the future. The world is laid at our feet and all we have to do is to choose the right steps. These will be the hardest steps we will ever take. They may be filled with constant struggles, but the attainment of our goals will outweigh any hardships we may have to endure. And as we step into the future; we must keep in mind how important education, fellowship, and the love for mankind are, for without these men they are but toys of time. And so tonight we bid farewell but with smiles on our lips for the future lies ahead. ROGER TESHIMA Valedictorian CLASS HISTORY Dionysus, a Greek historian once stated that "history is philosophy taught by examples." So it is with the history of our '64 graduating class. In 1952 the first post war generation began its formal education. In Barnwell there collected a troop of agreeable, well-mannered children; Dr. Hamman enrolled the best spellers (proven by the famous Sizzler spelling team). The dormitory enrolled all the six year old scholars and Kinniburgh naturally took all the kiddies called Kinniburgh. But the Southside had the best baseball players, the champion marbleshooters and the best fighters in town. Each of these groups remained isolated in their own school throughout the six years of elementary school and it was these years that taught us by examples the value of friendship and the meaning of truth. The next year we left with much foreboding to join forces with our rival schools for the noble cause of antagonizing the Junior High teachers at Central. We found getting along with each other wasn't so bad after all and since there wasn't too much more general damage that could be done to old Central that hadn't been done already if not by receding classes, then surely by our parents or grandparents, we joyfully occupied ourselves for the next two years tearing the place down brick by brick. The experiences we faced there added further to our growing opinions of life, for it was then that we learned citizenship and leadership through student government and sportsmanship through house leagues. From Central we moved to the new school, the first class to initiate Myers Junior High. Cheerfully we carved our initials in the desks and spilled unwashable ink on the floors to give it that used look. But we were proud of the new school and it was there in Grade 9 that we got our first taste of the high school responsibilities we were to soon undertake. We started high school in '62 and there we were on the bottom of the pile again. Unassumingly and with an air of innocent expectancy, we looked forward to Grade 10 initiation only to go through the worst tortures known to man. However, an initiate summed it up well when he said, "Well, some of those Grade 12's have been here so long it's the only enjoyment they have left in life." Then Grade 11 - that's the year we did all the work the Grade 12's were too busy to do and the Grade 10's didn't know how to do. And finally 1964, and Grade 12. Perhaps the greatest experience you face here is going to Math. 30 every day so Mr. Semaka can call you a "silly galoot with as much mathematical sense as a backwards aborigine", or, more endearing yet, "an utter village idiot". But we've grown up a lot in the last three years and added further to our philosophy: tolerance, perspective, and contrary to Mr. Jepson's opinion, selfdiscipline. Now the history of this group as a whole is finished. As well as examples of learning we can also look back on some real fun: like the time in Grade 9 we had a fire drill and someone ran back to the school to shut off a bunsen burner; or the time we thought we'd confuse the biology teacher by sneaking some hard boiled eggs into the lab incubator, or the time a boy wore Mr. Semaka's fur cap to Math class, or even the beard contest the Grade 12 boys had this year. Yes, we’ve had fun and we've learned, and we'll profit by every experience we’ve met in the last 12 years; for we have been taught the basic philosophies of life by examples in a mass fellowship we'll not experience again in just the same way. In closing, I'd like to extend my best wishes to every one of my fellow graduands for their future plans. LAURIE STUBBERT CLASS PROPHECY ALBERT TSUJI Upon graduating from Grade 12 after six long years of trying, I finally took Mr. Semaka's advice and "got lost”. Following several years of aimless wandering, I found myself in front of the door of the monastery atop Sacred Mount Fujiyama. There, beside the door, was a dormant volcano. Just as I peered inside this crater, for some unknown reason, it suddenly erupted and spewed scalding sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide in my face. In a flash I was unconscious; and upon awakening I looked around and saw I was in the year 1990. Strangely enough, I was at a reunion of the class of '64 at my alma mater, W. R. Myers. Almost everyone I had known was there. ROMAN BATORSKI had become a wealthy man as a second hand dealer in used space capsules. He devised a method of financing which gave the customer 5 light years to pay. DAVID BENNETT was an inventor of great renown. He invented a tractor that ran on used

Malcolm V. Edwards ADMINISTRATION ^NOPALS ^SSA(Z YEARBOOK 197^ It is always a pleasure to commend the yearbook committee and advisor for their fine efforts on behalf of the school. We recognize that the production of a quality publication does not come easily. The editor especially has a heavy responsibility with the general format, specific layouts, and deadlines. One of our endeavors this year has been the development of a statement of Philosophy and Objectives for W.R. Myers School. This statement will help to provide a sense of direction and purpose in the formulation of programs and policies at the school and classroom levels. We must continually examine what is being done in the school in terms of priority needs, student interests and capabilities, and resourses in orser to make the educational process as meaningful as possible. A concern at present is just how far we should go on pro - viding credits for work experience, special projects, and possibly other non-class types of activities which result in decreased enrolments in other parts of the program. Although the departmenal (matriculation) exams were abolished last year there is no apparent decrease in the quality of Instruction or learning in these courses. Most teachers and students are pleased with the resulting greater freedom and responsibility in the selection and relative emphasis of course topics. There does not appear to be a trend developing for students to obtain only the minimum requirements for a high school diploma (100 credits) or for university admission. The requirements for admission to post-secondary institutions have become more flexible with, for example, mosr faculties at the university presently requiring only five grade 12 matriculation subjects. I would like to encourage all of our students to use every opportunity here in developing their talents, not to be satisfied with the minimum in acheivement or total progress, and to accept a major responsibility for their learning. To the Grads of /?4, our best wishes go with you; and we trust that you will look back with pride on your accomplishments here, and will face the future with a high degree of confidence and conviction. Quite a large number of our students work down town. It is really hard to walk into a store in Taber and not see someone from our school. The following are the results from our after school survey. What is your after school job? If you could have any job what would it be? Craig Pollock: “I’m busy flipping burgers at A & W.” Ian Aitchison: “I would just like receiving money in the mail.” What do you do with the money you make from your job? If you don’t have a job, what would you do with the money you would have? Caryanne Chapple: “I’m saving to buy a new set of wheels and I use it for weekend stuff (If you know what I mean). ” Mark Nelson: “I buy Kazoos to add to my collection. ” Does your job interfere with your social life and/or school? Derrick Kromm: “I’m too dedicated to school.” Cory Carlin: So, I have money. Not all kids have parents willing to give them money all the time.” What do your parents think of you having or not having a job? The spare class gives them a break from the classroom. “Most of the time during my spare class I go to the library and do homework”, explained Cornelius Wiebe. Donelle Andrus revealed “sometimes I hang out at Mr. Gammon’s house.” Sit and wait for the bus or work for money at my job”, Ian Anderson commented. Michelle Jensen and Amber Sinclair both agree driving in circles, eating and sleeping are the best ways to spend their spare class. Visiting friends or watching soaps is what Jamie Pyne does. Shannon Buchta stated he goes home. Bryan Schramm either sleeps or does homework in Del’s classroom. “I do absolutely nothing”, says Scott Siemens. It lets us have a break in our days of hard work. During the pep rallies students can reveal themselves to their classmates and the teachers. A quiet student might come out as a really outgoing person. The students that are shy just sit on the bleachers and watch the action. The teachers also redeem themselves to the students and fellow teachers. The new teachers really show off when they try to act like the students. We recently sent out a survey about the pep rallies. The first question was: What is your favorite thing about pep rallies? Kevin Baker, Grade 12, replied, “We can laugh at the teachers and not get in trouble.” Various other Grade 12’s replied, “Just the part of getting out of class.” What activities would you include iff you were in charge of the next pep rally? Dallin Evanson, Grade 12, replied, “Have a good old pie eating contest.” Sharia Eldridge, Grade 12, replied, “Anything that makes a mess.” Who do you like to participate the most in pep rallies? Blair Kover, Grade 12, replied, “People who aren’t afraid to make a fool of themselves. Various Grade 12’s replied, “The teachers.” What was your favorite pep rally so far? Bo Hall, Grade 12, replied, “Last year’s mud wrestling in the pudding.” Dana Carlsen, Grade 12, replied, “The Halloween one this year.” This Page Is Sponsored by: TABER PHYSICAL THERAPY, 5401 50 AVE. How do you pass time while still looking attentive? “Try not to snore!”, said Spencer Hart. “1 look at the teacher every second so it looks as though I’m listening,” revealed Cory Titterington. How do you get from one side of the school to the other in only five minutes for the break between classes? “Run as if the second bell had run,” said Brad Potiuk. What are some frustrations that you’ve encountered this year writing an essay for any class? “As I was sitting in class one time and thinking of what to write, suddenly a panel from the ceiling fell on my head! The resulting splatters of blood on my paper made an interesting statement in Morse code. I quickly wrote it down before I passed out,” said Ian Aitchison. ^‘’1'et^oneThat,^ ^’neThat! 13 Here Today, Gone Tomorrow ABOVE: Diana Nessman shows her school spirit LEFT: Carmen Kercher and Jeff McClung posing for the camera MIDDLE: Joel Harding and his talented head RIGHT: Looking as beautiful as always is Keely Spengler. 14 Bcen^DOneThat!Bcefllwe,D°#e^ ABOVE: Jamie Nishima goes all out to gain people’s attention by dying his hair pink. Myers’ High School represent fads and fashions nationwide. All the students here dress as they feel and express themselves freely. Although not everyone agrees with the varying opinions, dressing is a way of life and the way you dress represents you. A survey was handed out to share these opinions. When the question of “why do you dress the way you do?” was asked, Dugan Broadfoot claimed that the girls like it, whereas Scott Siemens says its because he’s “O’ so cool.” Jody Francis chooses her clothing because they’re not in the laundry. When asked where do you shop, Cory Carlin replied, “whereever the road takes me.” Well, the road takes Lance Nielsen to Zellers in Lethbridge. Shannon Buchta likes to shop at 7-11 and C.J.’s although he won’t find any clothes there. Anita Froese shops at Charisma and her brothers’ closet. Jeff McClung states that he doesn’t talk to his parents so he is unable to find out how his parents feel about the way he dresses. Scott Siemens replied, “Well, I’m not exactly sure but if they say something I will have to hurt them.” I don’t think his parents would agree. The last question that was asked was “What type of clothing suits you best?” Brad Murray stated that his type of clothing is some that he likes and some that you don’t. Jeff McClung says that he likes anything that is not brand name along with clothing that shows he doesn’t want to associate with others. As you can tell, the individuality here at Myers is what makes our school so unique. Because of this, very few people can compete with our students. 15 How Long Has It Been There? AND THE SURVEY SAYS What is your favorite thing to do at lunch? Tom replied “take people’s lunch money.” What is your favorite food item from the cafeteria? Spencer Hart replied “A deli wedge but I’ve only had 1/15 of one because they are always gone and I like slurpees.” What do you do when you don’t have any money? Darren Kormos replied “Bum money from Jimmy Lucus.” (Hit him up, he’s good for it.) What is the worst thing you ever ate from the cafeteria? Nick Pyrch said, “whatever they sweep up off the floor and call mystery meat special.” 16 ABOVE: Looks like Cassia Blakley is feeling the full effects of the cafeteria hot dogs. Dr. Alfred Hamman was one such man. He pioneered in medicine and did all he could to help people in the Taber district. Graduating as an M.D. from the University of Manitoba, he came to Taber in 1909 to hang out his shingle (which can still be seen at his home) and begin the hard work of a country doctor In accordance with the times, Dr. Hamman was often called upon to answer sick calls from people many miles out on the lonely prairie. After he had treated the patient, Dr. Hamman would stay long ' hours with him until certain he could do no more. This endeared him to many people. Dr. Hamman soon became known to the people of Taber, and after a few years he was elected to the school board. He worked on it for many years, devoting much time and energy. In 1955 Dr. Hamman was recognized for his many services to Taber when the "Dr. Hamman School" was officially opened by him. But more than this he is remembered by the warmth and respect with which the people of Taber remember him. In his later years Dr. Hamman still remained a living monument to the hardship and courage of Canada's early pioneers. DIVISIONAL SCHOOL BOARD Ben Platt, Ivan Steves, Neil Purvis, (Superintendent); Dr. Enman , C.R. Rushford, (Chairman); Arnold Odland, E.A. Olafson, M.V. Crumley, (Secretary-Treasurer). DUTIES OF OUR DIVISIONAL BOARD The general duties of the trustees are to take care of the educational affairs of the division. The Board’s powers are limited by the School Act. Among other things they control the school building program, the purchase of equipment and supplies, the appointment of teachers, principals, and all other school personnel, the preparation of the budget, the conveying of school pupils, the arrangement of salaries and other items furthering the interests of education in the Division. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE In high school, academic excellence is largely dependent upon study. Study, to a large extent, is drudgery and loneliness. However, since it is central to learning every student who shoulders his proper responsibility, studies. There are other responsibilities that a student must carry in high school and in later life. These are not lonely activities, such as study, but are carried out in cooperation with fellow students. Some of these activities are linked with classes and some are linked with student activities. This Yearbook is an excellent example of a project which is brought to completion through a group. It is obvious that if the group is a numerous one, if it is enthusiastic and no one individual shirks his task, then the load upon the individual is lightened and the Yearbook is generally a superior product. A. D. SELINGER The Taber High School Yearbook is obviously such a superior product.. It is equally obvious that it has not yet attained perfection, nor is it likely to do so. But if we wish to iricrease its quality, we must have more assistance in producing it; everyone in the school must assume some responsibility for this ceaseless striving toward perfection. At the same time let us not neglect other school activities and responsibilities; but apply this same principle of cooperation and assumption of responsibility to all activities of the student. In this manner not only shall we become the best high school in Alberta but each of us shall have helped in the fulfillment of our own aims. To those who will be leaving Taber High School this year, thank-you for your efforts. May you be a success and God bless you in all your endeavours• C. M. DYNES VICE PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Again we are approaching the end of another school year and a time for saying of good-byes. For some another milestone has been reached. A change in routine will be necessary for those who are leaving schooling, a different environment for those who are continuing on to higher education. But for all in the years to come a looking back on the past with mixed reactions. It is my sincerest hope that you will be prepared to travel with confidence on whatever branch of the road of life you choose to follow, so that you will be able to look back on your life; and so that we can look back with pride t the graduates for 1958 from this school. I know.' It's something all high schools have.' No.' To us the staff who have toiled so many long hours and spent so much time and energy on organizing the Yearbook for 1957-1958, this was and is more than just another job. We wanted this volume to be a treasure-house of fond memories and constructive ideas. These fond memories of sports such as curling, classes when we made CL2, clubs for whom we worked so hard, Christmas and Easter Proms, and outings such as the Grade XI students enjoyed in May; these are ours and yours to share. The messages from our school officials and student representatives will provide guidance for higher goals. Years from now, a careful reading may serve as a personal inventory: How much has my schooling helped To you the graduates of 1957-58, may this Dawn provide you with guidance and joy in the dawning of a bright, completely new way of life and your sparkling career. On behalf of the Yearbook staff, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have in any way helped to make this Yearbook a success. // -ru^-scb001 way? rodaV-J acho°^ ■ the • s4 s c4o^t041 . e dust* 44'4-' • ■ '. ^^ =<^*01 - LEres * • 4 44 4 ? <7 4 41 V. mC' ......... x ^ c . the ror ws 50 5, ' ' 5 rtters to t iitors: This is >litical pai r making bat tout what oi lould have < -4 they she vents wh< ' ■ both V 4SS - -lasses to ■ Front Row: Linda Shan, (Reporter); Betty Osborne, (Reporter); Carol Akers, (Reporter): Blair Shaw, (Co- Editor); Carbl Draper,(ED.) This none at the end MICHAEL TRUYAERT We nave now reached this, the last year of our preparatory education. The future of the individual is now the particular concern of that individual. Let us now turn our thoughts to the past and. what we have learned from it. To most of us the memories of our first years of schooling are fragmentary and nebulous. Yet we learned. We learned to read and print and count. There were various activities in addition which encouraged us to develop new skills. Moving up the educational ladder, we met new challenges. A wider field of subject matter was presented to us; we encountered more involved arithmetic; we were introduced to the sciences; we learned the spirit of cooperation through working on our enterprise projects. The first real division in our progress came when we entered grade seven. Here was presented a new phase of development; a development which was concerned primarily with our social life. Our grouping was more flexible. True, we were still divided academically, but in other respects we were part of the large group, Junior High. These events formed a very important part of our lives then, even though we can now perceive the limited scope of those activities. Toward the end of our years in Junior High, we began to look forward to another important step in our educational career- High School. The transition was not nearly as revolutionary as we might have anticipated. There were, however, decisions to be made. We now had a choice of subjects and choices consistent with our future aspirations. We were confronted with that enigma, the time table. Looking back now it seems that these last years have passed with almost kaleidoscopic swiftness. This reminiscence would not be complete without some reflection on our teachers. At the time they seemed to be tyrants and ogres.. In the intervening years we have come to realize the greatness of their concern for us and how much they really had. our best interests at heart. These years of effort in learning have culminated now in this our final year. Each development, each phase, has been a stone in the foundation upon which we will build our future. Cornwall Canning Company DIVISION OF MACDONALDS CONSOLIDATED LIMITED Taber, Alberta GRADUATION SPEAKER Mr. Carl B. Johnson The theme of the address to the graduating class of 1958 was; "Assets Personally Yours." Mr. Johnson. Inspector of High Schools for the Southern Alberta District, divided his talk into five main headings: Talents, Faith, Nature, Canadianism and Youth. The first part of his address was directed to the talents of the individual. Everyone has talents and they must search themselves for their talents and strength. Mr. Johnson gave a striking example of this in Sir Winston Churchill who could not do arithmetic but became a prolific writer and painter. Said Mr. Johnson, "If you do not develop your best, you cannot be a credit to yourself and to your community. The second part was on faith. A person must have first, faith in himself and this can only be developed by thinking and working things through. One must have energy and the will to work. And secondly, there must be faith in ones fellow man. Perseverance is the only way one can learn to like things and people. Robert Wallace said, "There is no man from whom I cannot learn." Thirdly and most important, one must have faith in God. If,when one is full of trouble one will look up and see the beauty of the stars and the constellations, one will lose his troubles, and frustrations. Mark Twain has said, "I’ve known many troubles in my life and many of them never happened." l*Nature is a personal asset Mr. Johnson stated, "A dull life this, if full of care, we have no time to stand and stare." One must learn to appreciate beauty. Canadianism should be dear to us and we should be most thankful for it. "Youth," said Mr. Johnson and vitality. All-balance in physical, i ‘ * C1^r Sail^g’ ^ixeucau, uc pointed out mat. ir th sailing, they would not appreciate what they have achieved. u w T'/ls beautiful. full of energy, vim Although Mr. Johnson wished the grads*success with mental and spiritual growth, he did not wish Instead, he pointed out that, if they had clear i« cnSt^I?^/? Joh*son showed that the general level of education I a^ aS time goes on more educated people will be needed to give leadership. It seems a bit strange to me to be speaking to you tonight. Graduation is a time that we’ve looked forward to since beginning school, and now that it’s actually here I find it hard to believe. I doh’t know how well-qualified I am to be giving advice to you, graduates, but I would like to pass on some advice that I received recently. T’d like to compare each of you to an auto mobile. There are three general types of automobiles. On the high-priced level are the Cadillacs and Lincolns - those cars that have the utmost in performance and beauty. They're really worth something! On the medium - priced level are the cars that give satisfaction according to what the manufacturer puts into them. They aren’t the worst cars, for they have their merits. But they’re also not the best cars. There is certainly room for improvement. Lastly, there are those cars on the lowest level including the cheaper models and used cars and, in general, the cars that nobody seems to want. These are the cars that aren’t even worth what it took to make them. Now, as you travel along the highway with the three kinds of cars, you will observe some of them gliding smoothly along with hardly ever any flat tires or engine trouble, and they never run out of gasoline. Undoubtedly you will also come across many wrecks. Through careless driving they have gone off the road causing their own destruction, and more often than not, they have involved other cars. Also, along the highway you may expect to find derelicts, abandoned cars that have just given up the trip. They puttered slowly along until they could no longer move. I think you can all see the connection I am trying to make. The cars and the highway are you and the road of your life. At present we're at the beginning of the road, a commencement as graduation is often called. We're in the middle-priced range too-not the best, and certainly not the worst. The thing to do now is to advance to the highest class where we can be a person, not just a face in a crowd, and this each must do alone. On the highway up to this point, you've travelled with other cars. You have had the company of your family, your teachers and your school friends. But, like all highways, this one, too, has come to a crossroad. Although some of us may continue to travel on together, most of us will be taking different roads. Whatever road you take, don't be content with the mediocre, being of average worth. You don't want to become derelicts after coming this far, and, above all you don't want to become wrecks. To prevent wrecks along any busy highway there are signs and gujide posts. Similarly you will find(Kthem on your highway-signs that say 'stop/ ‘slow/ construction ahead^ "hill or bridge. The first ones we may expect to see are those that were written on stone tablets and given to us a few years ago. Our whole lives and our society are founded on them. There are two others at home who are always interested in our welfare and when the road is steep or under construction, and travelling is difficult they are always ready to lend assistance, be it material or spiritual. Over the years our parents have instilled in us the morals and characters which mould the rest of our lives. They also expect much of us. Let us hope that, even though we leave a secure, sheltered life, we can live up to those expectations. And then there are the guides found in sc

Thank you to all staff for putting up with our "sneaky" candid picture snapping throughout the school year and last but not least Lisa Mstalos for her moments of getting every one back in the game in her "own" crazy way. The year started out with a yearbook Conference in Lethbridge. Ct was a long two days, which set the basis for the next nine months. Only a few of us could attend but by the end of the year you couldn't tell because everyone had mastered the yeartech On-line Program! Our theme this year was music and songs. Our very diverse class presented us with a very diverse mix of music throughout the book, mainly using the titles rather than the entire song. .As Editor of the 2007 yearbook <7 was quite pleased to find a wonderful array of staff and talent. For the first semester we had a rather large class but we made it work and everyone's hard work payed off.
