    Making gestures inside and outside the booth: A comparative study

    Although studies on multimodality in interpretation are gaining momentum, no research has been carried out comparing the multimodal behaviour of simultaneous interpreters inside and outside the booth to date. This exploratory study aims to compare the co-speech gestures and adaptors made by five professional conference interpreters while interpreting simultaneously and in face-to-face communication. The starting hypotheses are that participants will make more and larger gestures during the interview, and more adaptors during interpreting. Participants were filmed in both situations, and sections of similar duration of the videos were analysed and annotated with ELAN to obtain the gesture rate (number of gestures per minute), gesture amplitude, and adaptor rate (number of adaptors per minute) for each participant in each situation. The results obtained invalidate the first hypothesis (the gesture rate was higher in the booth in all cases), confirm the second hypothesis (the gestures were broader during the interview), and are inconclusive with respect to the third hypothesis. The analysis of the adaptors presented special methodological challenges that need to be further explored. The finding of a higher gesture rate during interpreting than during the interview might question the categorization of simultaneous interpretation as a monologic activity288210,131Q

    Glucose Levels as a Key Indicator of Neonatal Viability in Small Animals: Insights from Dystocia Cases

    Neonatal mortality rates in small animals can reach alarming figures, with perinatal mortality ranging from 20% to 40%, primarily due to the abrupt transition from intrauterine to extrauterine environments. This study investigates the critical role of glucose levels in neonatal viability, particularly in cases of dystocia and fetal stress during cesarean sections. A cohort of 54 mothers and their 284 neonates was analyzed, focusing on maternal weight, litter size, and corresponding neonatal glucose levels. The results indicated a significant relationship between glucose concentrations and Apgar scores, with a cutoff established at 79.50 mg/dL for optimal neonatal viability. Additionally, a higher prevalence of hypoglycemia was documented in neonates with low birth weight and those from smaller litters. The findings underscore the importance of monitoring glucose levels in neonates, as hypoglycemia is associated with various pathologies, including sepsis and portosystemic shunts. Overall, this study highlights the necessity for prompt assessment of glucose levels to improve neonatal outcomes and reduce mortality in small animals.190,6982,7Q1Q1SCIE10,

    A lo largo de la historia, los entornos insulares han jugado siempre un papel determinante en el devenir de diversos procesos. En este sentido, esta obra pretende abordar desde un enfoque comparativo la evolución de los espacios archipelágicos de Canarias y las Ryūkyū desde 1936 hasta 1953. En efecto, los primeros años del siglo XX atestiguaron un rápido auge de eventos globales que tuvieron su repercusión tanto en territorios continentales como insulares. El culmen de los proyectos imperialistas y el estallido de las dos guerras mundiales fueron ejemplos de ello. Uno de los aspectos que con mayor reverberación resuena en la historia de estos espacios insulares es el de la revalorización estratégica. Dentro de esta son varios los elementos que salen a la palestra para entender mejor los procesos que se sucedieron en Canarias y las Ryūkyū. El valor geoestratégico de las islas para las potencias aliadas y del Eje, la importancia de estos entornos en las políticas exteriores de España y Japón, las medidas defensivas junto con los planes aliados de asalto o la estrategia estadounidense para la posguerra son las cuestiones más destacadas y donde salen a relucir múltiples similitudes. Pero las variables puramente militares desde un punto de vista técnico o de planificación no ofrecen por sí solas una imagen amplia de estos archipiélagos. El acercamiento histórico a factores sociales y culturales proyectan una visión integral, a la par que necesaria, sobre los protagonistas que experimentaron esta coyuntura bélica y posbélica. La conformación de las identidades regionales isleñas dada su condición de frontera al calor de los proyectos nacionalistas español y japonés o el análisis de las experiencias de la guerra por parte de los combatientes y civiles insulares son también variables indispensables para abordar comparadamente los contextos archipelágicos durante estas convulsas décadas.263Q

    Beyond the composition effect: teachers as moderators of achievement in schools

    Este artículo analiza la relación entre los estilos docentes, el nivel socioeconómico del alumnado y su interacción sobre el rendimiento académico a nivel de centro en el sexto curso de Educación Primaria. Se utiliza información censal de las Islas Canarias en el curso 2018/2019. Se estiman modelos de regresión lineal múltiple con las siguientes variables: estilo directivo, estilo participativo, nivel socioeconómico y su interacción. El rendimiento se mide a partir de pruebas externas de competencias. Se identifica que los estilos docentes y el nivel socioeconómico inciden en el rendimiento y que su interacción es heterogénea. El análisis muestra la importancia de analizar otras dimensiones además del efecto composición, identificando efectos escolares. Demuestra que la tarea docente modera la relación entre origen socioeconómico y logro educativo, aunque no de manera homogénea.The present article analyses a specific aspect of the school effect on performance in the sixth grade. Considering the importance of students' socioeconomic status in explaining academic achievement, we analyze whether the predominant teaching styles in schools can influence this relationship. To achieve this goal, we estimate multiple linear regression models for census data from the Canary Islands for the 2018/2019 school year. The variables of interest are the following: directive style, participative style and socioeconomic status. Achievement is measured by external proficiency tests. Our results indicate that teaching styles and socioeconomic status have an impact on performance, and that the interaction effect is heterogeneous.     La carretera experimental construida sobre un campo de lavas calientes entre las localidades de La Laguna y Las Norias en la isla de La Palma se ha construido con materiales procedentes del reciclaje y machaqueo de las coladas de lava, ceniza volcánica, cal y salmuera. La metodología empleada en el diseño, la optimización, la evaluación del impacto y la de toma de decisiones en la redacción del proyecto del trazado la infraestructura ha consistido en realizar un estudio de regresión multivariable y un estudio calorimétrico de los materiales de los suelos que conforman la plataforma. A la vista de los buenos resultados que se han obtenido en los ensayos se demuestra que la evaporación de la dotación de salmuera debido a las elevadas temperaturas resulta ser un estabilizante natural que modifica la estructura interna de los suelos de las diferentes capas de la infraestructura viaria.4838100,103Q48,

    Effective teaching practices are crucial for student success and the quality of education. One such practice that has recently gained attention is the use of engaging teacher messages, which have shown promising results. This study investigates the reciprocal relationship between teacher engaging messages and student motivation using a random intercept cross-lagged panel model. Participants were 1048 (Mean age = 16.33, SD = 1.25) high school students from 16 different secondary schools, 949 of whom participated in at least one measurement wave and were accounted for in the analyses participated in the study. Rooted in self-determination theory, the study found that messages highlighting the benefits of studying had a positive impact on changes in student motivation to learn, and that teacher engaging messages were not impacted by changes in student motivation. These findings suggest that effective teacher engaging messages, such as gain-framed autonomous messages, are partly independent from students’ motivation and can therefore be promoted to enhance student outcomes and the overall quality of education.Las prácticas docentes eficaces son cruciales para el éxito de los estudiantes y la calidad de la educación. Una de estas prácticas, que ha atraído recientemente la atención, es el uso de mensajes por parte de los docentes para fomentar el compromiso en los estudiantes, los cuales han mostrado resultados prometedores. Este estudio investiga la relación recíproca entre los mensajes de los docentes y la motivación de los estudiantes mediante un modelo de panel cruzado con interceptos aleatorios. Participaron en el estudio 1,048 estudiantes de secundaria (M = 16,33 años; DT = 1,25) de 16 institutos diferentes, de los cuales 949 han participado en al menos una serie de mediciones y han sido tenidos en cuenta en los análisis. El estudio, basado en la teoría de la autodeterminación, ha demostrado que los mensajes que destacaban los beneficios de estudiar tienen un impacto positivo en los cambios en la motivación de los estudiantes, mientras que los mensajes de los docentes no se han visto afectados por los cambios en la motivación de los estudiantes. Estos resultados sugieren que los mensajes eficaces de compromiso del docente, como los mensajes autónomos enmarcados en los beneficios, son en parte independientes de la motivación de los estudiantes y, por tanto, pueden promoverse para mejorar los resultados de los estudiantes y la calidad general de la educación

    A gendered analysis of interpersonal grammatical metaphor in historical medical writing

    Medical technical discourse has long been a site of negotiation between authoritative knowledge and patient engagement, with interpersonal grammatical metaphor (IGM) playing a key role in shaping communicative strategies (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2014). Although considerable study has investigated grammatical metaphor in scientific literature, limited studies have addressed its interpersonal uses in historical medical discourse (Taavitsainen & Pahta, 2011), especially from a gendered viewpoint. This study fills this gap by examining IGM in 18th- and 19th-century medical texts inside the Corpus of Women's Instructive Texts in English (CoWITE) and a corresponding comparable compilation of male-authored medical texts, used as a reference corpus. This study used Systemic Functional Linguistics as an analytical framework to examine how male and female authors employed IGM to establish authority and convey modality in technical specialised texts in written interaction (Martin & White, 2005). The analysis is expected to reveal significant gender differences: female-authored texts use more metaphorical realisations of obligation and possibility (e.g., "it is necessary to consider" vs. "one must consider"), implying a greater emphasis on involvement and indirect persuasion (Wodak, 1997) to avoid potential criticism in a male-dominated discipline. Male-authored texts, on the other hand, tend to favour less hedged statements, maintaining the disparity in medical authority. The findings seek to add to our knowledge of interpersonal positioning in historical medical discourse by indicating that gender influenced the linguistic strategies used to engage with patients and fellow practitioners. This study has implications for both historical sociolinguistics and the evolution of professional medical communication and wants to demonstrate the long-term impact of gendered discourse patterns on medical authority and reader- and user-centered discourse

    First record of the Indo-West Pacific spotted scat Scatophagus argus (Acanthuriformes, Scatophagidae) from the Canary Islands (East-Central Atlantic)

    The Indo-West Pacific spotted scat Scatophagus argus (Acanthuriformes, Scatophagidae) is reported for the first time in the Canary Islands (eastern-central Atlantic). This record is based on the sighting of an individual in 2017, which was photographed swimming in shallow waters off the north- eastern coast of Gran Canaria, along a route with heavy maritime traffic. In addition to ballast water and organisms transported by oil platforms, the specimen may have been released from an aquarium. No further sightings or captures of this species have been recorded.31030384,
