    Harnessing marine open data science for ocean sustainability in Africa, South Asia, and Latin America

    One of the biggest barriers to conducting ocean science around the globe is limited access to computational tools and resources, including software, computing infrastructure, and data. Open tools, such as open-source software, open data, and online computing resources, offer promising solutions toward more equitable access to scientific resources. Here, we discuss the enabling power of these tools in under-resourced and non-English speaking regions, based on experience gained in the organization of three independent programs in West African, Latin American, and Indian Ocean nations. These programs have embraced the “hackweek” learning model that bridges the gap between data science and domain applications. Hackweeks function as knowledge exchange forums and foster meaningful international and regional connections among scientists. Lessons learned across the three case studies include the importance of using open computational and data resources, tailoring programs to regional and cultural differences, and the benefits and challenges of using cloud-based infrastructure. Sharing capacity in marine open data science through the regional hackweek approach can expand the participation of more diverse scientific communities and help incorporate different perspectives and broader solutions to threats to marine ecosystems and communities.665980,943,2Q1Q1SCIE11,

    Mapping Spanish political landscape on migration: a sentiment and topic analysis of manifestos ahead of the 2024 EU election

    This study examines the electoral programmes of Spain’s four main national parties (PSOE, PP, VOX, and SUMAR) and Von der Leyen’s discourse after being re-elected as President of the European Commission regarding immigration, asylum seekers, and refugees. The key themes and disparities in the political discourses are found through text analysis, specifically tri-gram word clouds and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). Our findings reveal stark contrasts between the leftist SUMAR and the rightist VOX. SUMAR emphasises immigrants’ and human rights, while VOX focuses on the perceived failures of the EU’s immigration policy and human trafficking. The LDA analysis identifies 15 main topics with varying degrees of association for each party. Von der Leyen’s discourse aligns more closely with border control and security topics, advocating for a unified international approach. Correlation analysis further highlights the divergence between SUMAR and VOX discourses. In contrast, PSOE and PP exhibit a higher correlation, as do their positions with Von der Leyen’s discourse. These results underscore the distinct perspectives and approaches of the Spanish parties on immigration, revealing a complex political landscape shaped by ideological differences and external influences.2110,633Q110,0ERIH PLU

    Microplastics in Cronius ruber: links to wastewater discharges

    Microplastic pollution in the ocean is a growing problem. It affects the entire ecosystem and, therefore, the species that inhabit it. Plastics can be filtered or ingested by organisms, entering and negatively affecting individuals. Among the populations affected are crustaceans. In previous studies, fibers have been found mainly in the stomach contents of these animals, although other types, such as pellets, have also been found. This study examines the presence of microplastics in Cronius ruber, an invasive crab species in the Canary Islands, and investigates their potential links to nearby wastewater discharges. A total of 63 crabs were sampled from four beaches in Gran Canaria in 2021, and their stomach contents were analyzed through alkaline digestion, filtration, and micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (micro-FTIR). Microplastics were detected in 52% of individuals; the particles averaged 0.7 ± 0.5 mm in length, with an average of 1.73 ± 1.02 particles per crab. Fibers constituted 89% of the microplastics, with blue and black being the predominant colors. Rayon, commonly used in textiles, was the most frequently identified polymer (52%), highlighting the role of wastewater from laundry processes as a significant pollution source. Beaches close to unauthorized wastewater discharges, such as Anfi del Mar (n = 3) and El Puertillo (n = 32), showed the highest contamination levels, with a frequency of occurrence (FO) of microplastic particles of 67% and 58%, respectively. Playa de Las Nieves was the one with the lowest contamination level (n = 22), with a frequency of occurrence of microplastic particles of 41%. This is the first study to document microplastic ingestion in C. ruber, raising concerns about its ecological presence and the potential bioaccumulation of contaminants in marine ecosystems.     Advantages of geothermal energy in the power supply of large-scale desalination and wastewater treatment processes. A case study

    Achieving sustainability in the water-energy nexus is a major challenge in regions with high dependence on desalination processes. These processes consume significant amounts of energy and have a high specific weight in electricity systems, especially those that are not large in size. The in situ use of non-dispatchable renewableenergies in desalination processes has been widely studied in the scientific literature. In this paper, a method isdeveloped to identify the technical and environmental advantages of the direct interaction of high-enthalpy geothermal energy, as a dispatchable renewable energy source, in continuous water treatment processes in comparison with non-dispatchable renewable energy sources. The method is applied to a case study in the Canary Islands. The incorporation is proposed of an on-grid renewable energy system to supply a set of hydraulic complexes equipped with desalination and wastewater treatment plants. Different simulations are carried out, and trade-off solutions are identified and compared on the basis of the results obtained for different technical, economic and sustainability parameters. It was found that the geothermal energy requires less renewable energy effort to cover the demand of the water processing systems, for example 4 times less power than solar PV, as well as 6.5 times less land area.
