Veterinary Students’ Assessment of 3D Anatomical Prints as New Teaching Material in Practical Veterinary Anatomy Classes
This work aims to evaluate students’ opinions on the materials normally used in
anatomy practical classes (fixed and plastinated) compared to 3D anatomical prints. For
this purpose, students of anatomy enrolled in the Degree in Veterinary Medicine from
the University of Murcia filled out a satisfaction survey about both kinds of material.
The students rated the fixed material with a satisfaction percentage close to 100% and
the plastinated material with a percentage higher than 75%. Regarding the 3D prints,
the percentage obtained was consistently higher than 50% except for two issues: the
identification of the vascular structures of the dolphin’s head and the usefulness for surgery
of the viscera and vascular structures of the cat, both of which scored less than 50%. This
could be related to the lesser knowledge of dolphins of the veterinary students as well
as the complexity of these structures. However, the other questions, such as usefulness
for learning and exam preparation, the quality of the anatomical piece, the identification
of the feline spleen and kidneys, etc. obtained a satisfaction percentage between 58 and
90.40%. This reflects the good acceptance by students of the 3D prints and may allow for a

PSO-based design and optimization of jacket substructures for offshore wind turbines
The search for more and better wind resources pushes offshore wind farms further into
deeper waters, where jacket support structures become a competitive alternative to monopiles
for bottom-fixed offshore wind turbines. In this context, this paper proposes a cost-effective
methodology for the autonomous design that facilitates the generation of preliminary candidate
designs of jacket substructures, reaching a level of detail suitable for the initial design phase. A
Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm, with precomputed initial swarms, is used as a search
and optimization tool. The proposed strategy is able to find candidate designs that satisfy, with
a minimum use of material, a wide range of Ultimate Limit States, Fatigue Limit States and
Geometrical Restrictions. It is shown that the use of a precomputed initial swarm generated
taking into account a starting concept design of the structures with a low computational cost,
instead of a standard random population, significantly improves the efficacy and efficiency of
the algorithm. A reference case, based on the NREL-5MW wind turbine and its OC4 reference
jacket support structure, is used for studying and illustrating the capabilities of the proposal.211211,1174,0Q1Q1SCIE11,
Associations between cardiometabolic comorbidities and mortality in adults with cancer: multinational cohort study
OBJECTIVE To examine separate and joint associations between pre- existing cardiometabolic comorbidities and all cause and cause specific mortality in adults with cancer. DESIGN Multinational cohort study. SETTING Seven European countries from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study, 1 January 1992 to 31 December 2013. PARTICIPANTS 26 987 participants (54% women) who developed a first primary cancer. 2113 had a history of type 2 diabetes, 1529 had a history of cardiovascular disease, and 531 had a history of both, at the time of diagnosis of cancer. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals, CIs) for associations between pre- existing cardiometabolic comorbidities and all cause and cause specific mortality in adults with cancer, estimated with multivariable Cox regression models. Associations were also estimated by groups of five year relative survival of cancer (survival ≤40%, 40- 80%, and ≥80%) according to Surveillance, RESULTS At the time of diagnosis of cancer, 84.5% (n=22 814) of participants had no history of a cardiometabolic disease, 7.8% (n=2113) had a history of type 2 diabetes, 5.7% (n=1529) had a history of cardiovascular disease, and 2.0% (n=531) had a history of both cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. 12 782 deaths (10 492 cancer deaths) occurred over a mean follow- up period of 7.2 years. After multivariable adjustments, pre- existing comorbidities were positively associated with all cause mortality, with hazard ratios 1.25 (95% CI 1.17 to 1.34), 1.30 (1.21 to 1.39), and 1.60 (1.42 to 1.80) for participants with type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or both, respectively, compared with participants with no cardiometabolic comorbidity. Corresponding hazard ratios for cancer specific mortality were 1.13 (95% CI 1.05 to 1.22), 1.13 (1.04 to 1.23), and 1.33 (1.16 to 1.53), respectively. Associations for all cause mortality were stronger among participants with cancers with a five year relative survival ≥80%. In a subsample, duration of type 2 diabetes (Pinteraction =0.73) or cardiovascular disease (Pinteraction =0.24), categorised as <5 years or ≥5 years, did not modify associations between these comorbidities and all cause mortality. CONCLUSIONS In this study, cardiovascular disease or type 2 diabetes, or a combination of both, before a diagnosis of cancer, was associated with increased mortality (all cause mortality, and cancer and cardiovascular disease specific mortality). These f indings support a direct role of cardiometabolic comorbidities on the prognosis of cancer.1
Effect of cystic fibrosis modulator therapies on serum levels of fat‐soluble vitamins
This is a prospective, multicenter study of a cohort of 224 cystic fibrosis (CF) patients treated with CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) modulators (CFTRm). Our aim was to prospectively analyze the effect of CFTRm treatment on fat-soluble vitamin serum levels. Demographic and clinical data were recorded, and fat-soluble vitamin levels were analyzed at baseline, and at 6 and 12 months after starting treatment. Two groups were analyzed separately: patients receiving dual therapy lumacaftor/ivacaftor or tezacaftor/ivacaftor (Lum/Tez+Iva), and those on triple therapy with elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI). We found that treatment with ETI produced a significant increase in vitamin D and A levels within the first 6 months, which was maintained at 12 months. However, with dual therapy, we observed an increase only in vitamin A levels within the first 6 months, which was not maintained at 12 months. Molecular analysis of cryptosporidiosis on cattle farms in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands (Spain)
Cryptosporidium spp. infections in calves cause serious economic losses in livestock and pose an important zoonotic risk. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. in cattle on the island of Gran Canaria. Faecal samples were collected from calves and adult cattle from a total of 15 farms, and a questionnaire survey was conducted to farmers. The presence of Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts in faeces was determined by microscopy, showing infection rates of 45.9% in calves and 4.1% in adults, with positive correlation with the faecal scores of infected animals (p < 0.0001). Samples were amplified by PCR targeting SSU rRNA, with positivity rates for calves and adults being 51.7% and 31.7%, respectively. The PCR-positive samples were further genotyped and sequenced for the 60 kDa glycoprotein gene (GP60) and the microsatellite TP14. Four Cryptosporidium species were identified (C. parvum, C. ryanae, C. bovis, and C. andersoni), of which C. parvum was the most frequent in calves (45.8%) and adults (29.2%). GP60 sequencing revealed that all C. parvum samples belonged to the IId family, the most frequent subtypes being IIdA22G1 and IIdA23G1. Overall, the results of this study demonstrate a high occurrence of Cryptosporidium spp. in both calves and adult cattle, including the zoonotic IId family of C. parvum. These findings have significant implications for cattle farming and public health. The lack of awareness among farmers regarding cryptosporidiosis highlights the need for caution to prevent epidemiological outbreaks that could impact both human and livestock health.141140,678Q1ESCI9,
A survey of handwriting synthesis from 2019 to 2024: A comprehensive review
Handwriting, as a uniquely human skill, contributes to fine motor development and cognitive growth. Beyond mere functionality, handwriting carries individuality and subtle emotional nuances, evoking feelings of intimacy and authenticity. Consequently, the generation of synthetic handwritten manuscripts should not only prioritize the production of legible text, but also seek to enhance personalization and authenticity in digital communication. This enhancement renders handwriting synthesis invaluable in domains such as digital marketing and e-learning. Notably, handwriting synthesis plays a pivotal role in forensic science, particularly in signature verification, to bolster security and prevent fraud. Additionally, it has the potential to enhance accessibility, particularly for individuals with disabilities, and assist in health monitoring among elderly populations. Motivated by the significance of handwriting synthesis, this paper conducts a comprehensive literature review on the synthetic generation of handwriting and signatures. By examining research from 2019 to 2024, we categorize methods of synthesis, evaluate synthetic handwriting quality, and explore practical applications. La relación entre espacio urbano y violencia armada fue objeto de un tratamiento específico en la producción cronística castellana del final de la Edad Media a la hora de integrarla en el imaginario del orden y el conflicto políticos. En este trabajo se propone analizar el combate urbano ocurrido en Medina del Campo el 28 de junio de 1441, en el contexto del conflictivo reinado de Juan II de Castilla. Real-Time Hand Gesture Recognition: Lightweight Keypoint-Based Approach with Medoid Similarity
Gesture recognition is crucial in computer vision,
with applications in security, consumer electronics, and
beyond. While deep learning techniques like Convolutional
Neural Networks or pre-processing methods such as optical
flow achieve high classification accuracy, they often rely on
large pre-trained networks or computationally intensive preprocessing, making them unsuitable for real-time or
resource-limited applications. This paper introduces a novel
lightweight classifier that leverages skeleton features and
hand-shape similarity to representative gestures for efficient
gesture recognition. By focusing on keypoints that reflect the
human body’s structure and similarity to static gesture
medoids, our approach reduces computational complexity
while maintaining competitive performance, as
demonstrated in tests on the public Jester database. This
work offers an efficient solution suitable for gesture
recognition applications requiring real-time processing with
limited computational resources.4574471
Effect of a multifaceted intervention on potentially unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions in general practice, out-of-hours services, and nursing homes in Spain
Objective: To evaluate the impact of a multifaceted antimicrobial stewardship intervention on potentially unnecessary antibiotic prescribing. Material and methods: Before and after quality control study carried out in three different settingsgeneral practice, out-of-hours services, and nursing homesin Spain. Healthcare professionals (both doctors and nurses) self-registered common infections using a specific template for each setting before (2022) and after (2023) receiving a 5-hour intervention on prudent antibiotic use. Results: Eighty-nine professionals participated in the first registration (48 in general practice, 23 in out-of-hours services, and 15 in nursing homes), with 71 (79.8%) completing the intervention and second registration. Potentially unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions were 68.5%, 41.7%, and 77.7% in the first registration, respectively, and 61.4%, 34.8%, and 86.8% after the intervention, showing reductions of 10.4% in general practice and 16.5% in out-of-hours services, and an 11.7% increase in nursing homes, albeit without statistically significant differences. Conclusions: The study found that this intervention slightly improved antibiotic use, with minimal impact, but worsened in nursing homes.Objetivo: Evaluar el impacto de una intervención multifacética en la prescripción antibiótica potencialmente innecesaria. Material y métodos: Estudio de calidad antes-después realizado en tres ámbitos distintos medicina general, servicios de urgencias de atención primaria y residencias geriátricas en España. Los profesionales sanitarios (tanto médicos como personal de enfermería) registraron infecciones comunes utilizando una plantilla específica para cada entorno antes (2022) y después (2023) de recibir una intervención de 5 horas sobre prescripción prudente de antibióticos. Resultados: 89 profesionales participaron en el primer registro (48 en medicina general, 23 en urgencias y 15 en residencias), de los cuales 71 (79,8%) completaron la intervención y el segundo registro. La prescripción antibiótica potencialmente innecesaria fue 68,5%, 41,7% y 77,7% respectivamente en el primer registro, y 61,4%, 34,8% y 86,8% después de la intervención, mostrando reducciones del 10,4% en medicina general y 16,5% en urgencias y aumento del 11,7% en residencias, sin diferencias estadísticamente significativas.
Conclusiones: La intervención mejoró ligeramente la prescripción antibiótica después de la intervención, con mínimo impacto. En residencias geriátricas, su calidad empeoró.0,3991,9Q3Q3SCIE11,
