Processability and properties of cubic-BaTiO<inf>3</inf>/poly(vinylidene fluoride) composites for additive manufacturing: From powder compounding to 3D-printed parts
Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is a piezoelectric and thermoplastic material with great potential for additive manufacturing (AM) applications. Using barium titanate (BaTiO3) as filler, PVDF-based composite materials were developed, characterized, and processed by AM material extrusion (MEX). The morphological features and phase transformations occurring throughout the processing of BaTiO3-filled PVDF, from the compounding to the printed part, were analyzed. The morphology of the powder feedstock after dispersion in a high-energy ball mill changed from spheroidal to laminar and β-phase formation was favored. Microhardness gradually increased with the BaTiO3 content, obtaining an enhancement of ~60% for a content of 25 vol%, and supported the good dispersion of the filler. A ~48% increase of the dielectric permittivity was also achieved. After extrusion, filaments with a filler content of 15 vol% showed a more stable diameter, as well as higher crystallinity and surface roughness, compared with those with lower BaTiO3 contents. Material extrusion of filament and direct printing of pellets based on MEX were successfully used to obtain AM parts. Composite parts showed enhanced surface roughness, hydrophilicity, and flexural modulus (up to ~33% for the 7 vol% composite compared with the PVDF), thus leading to superior mechanical characteristics and potential biomedical applications. Highlights: Dry high-energy ball milling was a suitable greener dispersion approach. MEX processes were successfully used to obtain 3D-printed parts. The use of direct printing of pellets/powder improved the 3D printability. The surface roughness and hydrophilicity increased with the filler content. The permittivity and elastic modulus increased with the filler content.161160,7954,8Q1Q1SCIE11,
Enhancing balance and auditory function in bilateral vestibulopathy through otolithic vestibular stimulation: insights from a pilot study on cochlea-vestibular implant efficacy
Introduction This study evaluates cochleovestibular implants (CVI) for improving auditory and vestibular function in patients with bilateral vestibulopathy and severe-to-profound hearing loss. CVI uniquely combines auditory and vestibular stimulation, offering a potential solution for dual impairments in hearing and balance. Methods Ten patients underwent CVI implantation. Auditory function was assessed with pure-tone audiometry (PTA) and speech recognition at baseline, 3, and 9 months post-implantation. Vestibular function was measured using the Dynamic Gait Index (DGI), Sensory Organization Test (SOT), posturography, and the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI). Placebo-controlled tests verified cochleovestibular stimulation specificity. Results Auditory outcomes showed PTA improvements from 78 dB HL preoperatively to 34 dB HL at 3 months and 36 dB HL at 9 months, alongside speech recognition gains. Vestibular improvements included significant DGI (p < 0.05) and SOT score increases (33% to 68%, p < 0.05). DHI scores reflected reduced dizziness-related disability. Residual balance gains after device deactivation suggest neural adaptation, and placebo tests confirmed cochleovestibular stimulation specificity. Discussion CVI effectively restores auditory and vestibular function, with improvements in hearing, balance, and quality of life. Neural plasticity likely supports long-term benefits. Future research should refine device design and stimulation protocols to enhance outcomes further.120,9662,7Q2Q2SCIE10,
A review of the last 30 years in the archaeological research of La Gomera Island
The text summarizes the journey of archaeological research in La Gomera from 1994 to the present.

Introduction: This article aims to define the elements which conform the uchronia through
Philip K. Dick’s, The Man in the High Castle (1962), and the homonymous series produced by
Ridley Scott and Frank Spotnitz (2015-2019). Methodology: The origins of the uchronia have
been examined among the science fiction framework, as well as some definitions of the term
from various disciplines. A descriptive analysis about the implied elements in the uchronian
characterisation has been developed, following Altman’s semantic-syntactic approach to
defining the cinematic genre, which has been transferred to the realm of literature. Analysis
and results: The portrayal of fictional and historical figures produces semantic-syntactic
connections, considering the conflicts that they introduce through their perception about the
uchronian world. A series of minor objects connect to the concept of authenticity in distinctive
areas, as one of the main themes that the genre examines. Conclusions: Contrarily to other
correlated subgenres, the uchronia suggests a possible fictional world based on historical
factors. The contrast between the novel and the series exhibits the solid connection between
both formats despite their different nature.181180,196Q

Pasta Consumption and Cardiometabolic Risks in Older Adults with Overweight/Obesity: A Longitudinal Analysis
Objective: Low Glycemic Index (GI) diets improve cardiometabolic risk (CMR) specifically in those with insulin resistance. However, the prospective association between pasta (a low GI staple) consumption and CMR is unclear. We evaluated the longitudinal association of pasta consumption with CMR (after 2 y: body weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), blood pressure (BP); after 1 y: fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides) in ∼6000 older adults (50% women) at high CMR. Methods: Consumption of pasta and other staples were determined as the cumulative average of reported intakes at baseline and annual follow-up visits from food frequency questionnaires and defined as energy-adjusted (residuals) and the number of daily servings. Longitudinal association between pasta consumption and CMR was assessed in PREDIMED-Plus participants (Trail registry number: ISRCTN89898870). Results: Mean (SD) dry pasta intake was 9(7) g/d at Year 1 and 8(6) g/d at Year 2. In linear regression models, higher pasta intake was associated with greater 2 y decreases in body weight, BMI and WC. When fully adjusted, every additional serving of pasta was associated with significantly greater 2 y decreases in body weight (−2.23(−3.47, −0.98 kg), BMI (−0.86(−1.27, −0.34 kg/m2) and WC (−1.92 (−3.46, −0.38 cm). There was no evidence of association with other outcomes. Additionally, substituting equivalent servings of pasta for white bread or white rice or potato was significantly associated with greater 2 y decreases in body weight and BMI. Replacing white bread with pasta was associated with higher 2 y reductions in WC. Replacing potato with pasta was associated with improvements in diastolic BP and HDL-cholesterol. Conclusions: Equivalent serving substitutions of white bread/white rice/potato with pasta may help reduce CMR in older Mediterranean adults with overweight/obesity. While such substitutions are feasible where pasta consumption aligns with the local gastronomic culture, the feasibility and potential CMR benefit of such interventions should be confirmed in other populations.1311
