Exploring the dynamics of collaborative research: Publication trends in the LUE IMPACT projects in France

What is new? This study takes an interest in the dynamics of collaborative research as they materialize through publications conducted within the LUE IMPACT initiative at Lorraine University of Excellence, France, over the period 2016-2024. What was the approach? Using bibliometric data from HAL and OpenAlex databases, it studies publications in terms of co-authorship and with regard to their underlying organizational (cross-laboratory) and cognitive (cross-discipline) proximity. What is the academic impact? The study underscores the increasing number of multi-authored and multi-laboratory publications in the seven projects of the LUE IMPACT framework, as well as the diversity of the disciplinary fields involved. It also shows, however, that disciplinary proximity was by far the catalyst that underpinned co-publications. Narrow interdisciplinarity appeared to be the “optimal level” of disciplinary collaboration; but this equilibrium turned out to cover an underlying disequilibrium among discipline domains. What is the wider impact? This study offers key benefits to research management and administration by providing a data-driven understanding of collaborative research dynamics within institutional initiatives. It equips research administrators with evidence-based guidance to refine collaboration strategies, and maximize the outcomes of funded projects

Solutioning the Impacts of Climate Change: Research and Other Scholarly Activities Curated by Research Managers at Jamaica’s Leading Public University

What is new? Research Managers at Jamaica’s leading public university have curated for the first time and presented in this paper research and other scholarly activities undertaken by their institution to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) such as Jamaica. What was the approach? Mining and analysis of the research database maintained by the University’s research management office and a review of relevant literature on climate change were undertaken. What is the academic impact? The diverse, impactful scholarly output highlights the strong commitment of the University to its mission, significantly advancing the understanding and mitigation of the adverse effects of climate change, particularly within the context of SIDS. What is the wider impact? This paper underscores the important role of higher education institutions on climate change and makes recommendations on how other universities can contribute to climate action. It also provides insights on the critical role of research managers in supporting impactful research, engaging in research information management, and disseminating their institution’s research. The paper ends with further initiatives the University’s research management office will be implementing concerning climate change and the enabling capacity building activities for its research managers

Strengthening Competencies and Skills through Legal Clinics: A Case Study of the FGV São Paulo Law School’s Copyright Clinics

Legal Clinics offer students hands-on professional practice in various areas, developing skills in negotiation, strategy formulation, ethical decision-making, teamwork, and legal document drafting. At FGV São Paulo Law School, these clinics are part of the mandatory undergraduate curriculum, offered in the seventh and eighth semesters. This article analyzes the impact of Copyright Legal Clinics, facilitated by the authors for three years, through a student-centred survey. The survey, based on CEPI's research, evaluates competencies and skills expected of future lawyers amid technological and social changes, categorized into "legal," "management," "technological," and "socio-emotional" areas. The findings highlight the strengths and weaknesses of this methodology in preparing students for legal practice beyond theoretical knowledge, although students had little time to reflect on the dynamics of self-organization, as the focus of the clinic was on their training and client service. It is important to highlight the significance of the social aspect of the Clinics in raising students' awareness of the importance of memory institutions and the representation of the Clinics, as a significant departure from traditional doctrinal teaching prevalent in Brazil and Latin America. This discussion aims to contribute to the evolution of legal education, particularly in Latin America, emphasizing the importance of practical, innovative teaching methods

Learning law through experience and the development of competencies: the case of the law school at Uniandes

This article examines the curricular transformation of the undergraduate programme at the Uniandes School of Law, highlighting the creation and implementation of the Eje Transversal de Aprendizaje Jurídico Experiencial (AJET). This innovative educational proposal is framed within a new competency-based curriculum that emphasises experiential learning, drawing on the theories of David Kolb, John Dewey, Jean Piaget, and others. Through three key types of courses or stages —projects, litigation, and clinics— AJET integrates active methodologies such as problem oriented project-based learning (PO-PLB), simulations, and law clinic training. This approach not only responds to the demands of an ever-changing legal environment but also promotes ethical and socially responsible training. The article discusses the importance of competency-based education, highlighting its advantages over content-centred education, and the challenges and opportunities in the implementation of AJET. The conclusion emphasises how this educational transformation prepares future lawyers to effectively and ethically face contemporary challenges, setting a new standard in legal education

Comparison of Paper Cases Versus Video Cases for Case-Based Learning in Physiotherapy Students: A Cross Over Study

Case-based learning (CBL) is a pedagogical method linking theory with practice, typically using developed or real-life patient cases.  The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of paper versus video cases for CBL in physiotherapy students on performance of a clinical reasoning exercise and student’s evaluations of each method. A cross-over design study was used.  Twenty-nine first year physiotherapy students were allocated to two groups.  Two case scenarios were used with group one assigned the paper case for case one, group two the video case, and then the groups crossed-over CBL formats.  Paired t tests were used to compare the clinical reasoning exercise score between the paper and video cases, and for quantitative measures of student’s evaluations of each method.  Thematic analyses were performed to assess qualitative measures of student’s perceptions of the CBL formats. There were no significant differences in total score of the clinical reasoning exercise between the two formats (p>0.05), and inconsistent findings in the individual questions.  Quantitatively and qualitatively the student’s evaluated that the video case format was better for authenticity, and the paper cases provided more accessible and comprehensive information. This study found that paper and video cases are both beneficial in different respects for the learning and development of the assessment and clinical reasoning process in first year physiotherapy students.  Teachers should use both methods for CBL but consider the strengths and weaknesses of both methods when choosing which format to use
