Banding Together to Block the Ban: Rhode Island\u27s Need to Protect the Freedom to Read in Its Libraries
Libraries are the Living Rooms of Communities Situated in the Scholarly and Public Spheres
The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) hosts the Bateman Competition each year to help university students hone their skills by allowing them to create and implement a campaign from start to finish on a real client and submit a report of their success and findings. The competition has had a variety of clients but focuses on teaching students how public relations looks in the ‘real world.’ It allows students to practice what they are taught in the classroom on a real campaign. The 2025 client was EveryLibrary, a non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for libraries across the country on issues like funding and book banning.
This Capstone project aims to showcase the work of the six students on the RWU PRSSA Bateman team, highlighting the campaign we created to support and advocate for EveryLibrary. The campaign was centered around bringing access to education/knowledge to underrepresented communities, educating residents on book banning, and creating a new wave of advocates on college campuses. A final copy of the case and report was submitted to the PRSSA National Board for review and is currently being assessed against other competition submissions

Revisiting Long Island-based nonprofit organizations\u27 use of traditional and digital media for public relations outreach
Nonprofit organizations hold a pivotal role in society, catering to diverse communities and promoting social causes through strategic communication initiatives. Effective public relations (PR) serves as an indispensable tool for nonprofits, facilitating the development of awareness, stakeholder engagement, and the implementation of mission-driven initiatives. The integration of social and owned media has transformed how nonprofits engage with their audiences, providing new opportunities for interaction while creating unique challenges, particularly when nonprofits are dealing with the residual impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, which exacerbated financial instability and complicated program delivery, membership retention, fundraising, and staffing. This study builds upon and compares prior research and surveys conducted in 2011, 2012, and 2013 to explore the use of social and traditional media by nonprofit organizations on Long Island, adjacent to New York City. The research aims to provide a snapshot of organizational PR challenges while suggesting opportunities for improving the deployment of available media resources
Your Courses on Board: Using Virtual Whiteboards to Engage Students
Virtual whiteboards like Google Jamboard became popular during the COVID-19 pandemic. This G.I.F.T.S. paper will demonstrate how I used Google Jamboard in my classes. Virtual whiteboards help students understand what they are learning and promote student participation and engagement in class. Virtual whiteboards are especially useful in the instruction of communication theories. I included in this paper how I taught schema theory using Jamboard. A brief survey was conducted the first time Jamboard was introduced in a course. A total of 60 students filled out the survey. More than 80 percent of the students indicated that they liked the platform, while about 70 percent had never used Jamboard before
