    Autistic Veterinary Surgeon Mental Wellbeing and Psychosocial Working Conditions

    In the absence of evidence concerning mental wellbeing in autistic veterinary surgeons, the first aim of this study was to generate a profile of mental wellbeing in this population and draw comparisons with veterinary surgeon and general adult population norms. A high-quality psychosocial work environment may represent a protective factor for mental wellbeing and retention. Thus, the second aim of this study was to explore the extent to which autistic veterinary surgeons’ psychosocial working conditions meet aspirational UK government Management Standards and compare this to general workforce and veterinary surgeon norms. The third aim was to explore the strength and direction of linkages between psychosocial working conditions and mental wellbeing in order to generate recommendations on psychosocial work environment modifications to support mental wellbeing

    Electrochemical Analysis of Gold Nanoparticles Multifunctionalised with Cytochrome c and a Zinc Porphyrin

    Cytochrome c (Cyt c), known for its functional redox capabilities, plays a pivotal role in biological processes such as the electron transport chain and apoptosis. However, understanding how different conjugation strategies impact its structural and redox characteristics is limited. To fill this gap, we investigated the effects of conjugating Cyt c and a zinc(II) porphyrin (Zn Porph) to gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). We used circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy to detect structural conformational changes in Cyt c upon conjugation and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) to identify protein orientation. Cyt c was predicted to have different orientations depending on the size of AuNPs and methods used to conjugate the protein, it was hypothesised that the orientation of Cyt c may influence the redox properties of the protein. The electrochemical properties of Cyt c were assessed using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). We used DPV-based to determine the heterogeneous rate constant (k0). The results show a lower k° for conjugated Cyt c than free Cyt c, likely due to structural changes in the protein. The spatial orientation of Cyt c had minimal influence on k0, while ligand density and AuNP size had an effect. The k0 value of Zn Porph did not decrease on conjugation. Despite these changes, Cyt c and Zn Porph maintained their electrochemical capabilities after conjugation

    COVID-19 Infection, Admission and Death Amongst People with Rare Autoimmune Rheumatic Disease in England. Results from the RECORDER Project.

    The RECORDER (Registration of Complex Rare Diseases – Exemplars in Rheumatology) project, in collaboration with the National Congenital Anomaly and Rare Disease Registration Service (NCARDRS), has established the methodologies for identification and registration of people with rare autoimmune diseases within Hospital Episodes Statistics (HES) data. NCARDRS is part of the National Rare Disease Registration Service (NDRS) at Public Health England (PHE). They have access to linked national datasets of electronic health records at patient-identifiable level for the whole population of England. This access is enabled by NCARDRS’ legal permissions to access patient-identifiable data without consent (Section 251 approval, Reference CAG 10-02(d)/2015). For some of RECORDER and NCARDRS COVID-19 response work, the work extends beyond Section 251 approval. In these instances it has been approved under Regulation 3(4) of the Health Service Control of Patient Information Regulations 2002 (COPI), allowing the processing of confidential patient information for the purposes of protecting public health and managing the COVID-19 outbreak. Due to legal and ethical considerations, supporting data from RECORDER publications cannot be made openly available. However, NCARDRS data are available to all who have a legal basis to access them.     From competition to facilitation: temporal contiguity determines interactions between events in human Action-Outcome performance

    Three experiments (n=81, n=81, n=82 respectively) explored how temporal contiguity influences Action-Outcome learning, assessing whether an intervening signal competed, facilitated, or had no effect on performance and causal attribution in undergraduate participants. Across experiments, we observed competition and facilitation as a function of the temporal contiguity between Action and Outcome. When there was a strong temporal relationship between Action and Outcome, the signal competed with the action, hindering instrumental performance but not causal attribution (Experiments 1 and 3). However, with weak temporal contiguity, the same signal facilitated both instrumental performance and causal attribution (Experiments 1 and 2). Finally, the physical intensity of the signal determined the magnitude of competition. As anticipated by associative learning models, a more salient signal disrupted to a greater extent instrumental performance (Experiment 3). The current results can be accounted for by a recent adaptation of configural theory of learning (Herrera et al., 2021)
