Tailoring the in-situ formation of intermetallic phases in the self-lubricating Al-WS2 composite for enhanced tribological performance with wear track evolution analysis

    No full text
Self-lubricating aluminium matrix composites with enhanced tribological properties are sought for weight critical applications. In previous studies, the Al composites incorporating the solid lubricant WS2 have been shown to reduce both the coefficient of friction and wear rate, positioning them as promising candidates in various tribological applications (e.g. automotive industry). However, the impact of interfacial reactions between Al and WS2 during composite production on tribological performance has still not yet been explored. This study highlights the hardening effect of the reaction products. Despite some literature assuming a negative impact of these reactions as they consume WS2 in the composites, this study presents evidence that this cannot be generalised for the overall outcome. Interestingly, a controlled amount is shown to be beneficial for tribological properties. In this work, the tribological influence of the Al-W intermetallic structure forming during spark plasma sintering of the Al-WS2 composites was investigated. The microstructure was tailored by adjusting the manufacturing temperature between 500 and 600 °C. The Al-WS2 fabricated at 580 °C exhibited the lowest coefficient of friction and specific wear rate (reduced by 20% and 97%, respectively, compared to the one fabricated at 500 °C. Furthermore, the worn surface morphology in different stages during friction was evaluated by a novel wear track evolution analysis. This study confirmed that offering a balance between the fraction of solid lubricants and in-situ formed hard intermetallic structure is crucial to the effective formation a protective layer on the worn surface

Returns & Simulacra by Solomiya Moroz

    No full text
Returns and Simulacra is a digital score that integrates sound, video projections, and live performance to explore themes of identity and reality. The performer, Zubin Kanga, interacts with a digital score using an instrument called Piano Hands, which incorporates mini bee accelerometers and touch-sensor attachments. This instrument allows Kanga to control a Max/MSP patch interface wirelessly, shaping the audiovisual elements of the performance in real time. The piece delves into the performer's multiple identities on stage, blurring the lines between reality and virtuality. It incorporates footage of Kanga himself, as well as archived performances of British queer cabaret performers from the past, such as Douglas Byng from the 1930s. These different characters are matched with specific piano sound samples, creating a juxtaposition between traditional and modern, classical and comedic, and various other contrasts

Young migrants find pathways to integration challenging, while settled urban communities experience shifting structural and social relations as new arrivals are accommodated in their neighbourhoods. This project extends existing knowledge of migration by building on established collaborations between stakeholders in Nottingham and Lund. It will analyse how place-making through arts and culture fosters a sense of engagement and supports integration, and through developing arts interventions that can be replicated in other contexts. The multi-actor interdisciplinary applied research project’s goals are to: 1) deepen conceptual understanding of how arts-based place-making activities contribute to enhanced social and relational connections between communities in urban places; 2) facilitate young migrants’ place-attachment and integration through cultural participation, with a focus on gender; 3) co-create a sustainable repertoire of tools for municipalities to use in their strategic plans for supporting migrants; 4) develop a shared knowledge platform for cities across Europe to find sustainable solutions to social integration through arts based activities that enable all citizens, including the newly arrived, to contribute to urban societies
