The camp was named to honor the decorated World War II veteran from Washington County, Captain Leroy Pond (1918-1945). Camp Leroy Pond was later demolished. Leroy Pond Drive, near Bud Walton Arena, on the University of Arkansas campus, connecting Stadium Drive with Razorback Road, is also named in honor of Pond
