Sudanese Banking Sector and Stress Testing

    Get PDF
The repercussions of the 2008 Global Financial Crisis helped to reconsider the foundations used in assessing the banks’ withstand potential crises. In 2009, the BCBS issued a document entitled “Principles for Sound Stress Testing Practices and Supervision” as a basis for early evaluation of the performance of banking institutions and their ability to overcome sudden shocks and crises. The study aims to examine the ability of the Sudanese Banking Sector to pass stress testing and withstand sudden shock in light of the Basel II standards of stress test. The methodology was based on analyzing the performance of Sudan's economy, consolidated balance sheet, and financial soundness indicators of the banking sector (2005-2021). Additionally, it was based on a scenario designed for reverse stress testing (2022-2025). The results show that the Sudanese banking sector failed to bear sudden shocks and pass the stress testing due to its lack of commitment to applying the supervisory standards of Basel II. The war that broke out in the state of Khartoum on April 15, 2023, led to a deterioration in the political and economic conditions. It is expected to reduce the banking sector's power to absorb shocks. The paper recommends the Central Bank of Sudan follow up on the commitment of banks to apply the stress testing and financial soundness standards recommended by Basel II, especially capital adequacy, liquidity requirements, and political risk. Furthermore, the implementation of contractionary monetary policies serves to reduce inflationary pressures, which helps banks avoid credit and market risks.

How to Derive the Other 37 Valid Modal Syllogisms from the Syllogism ◇A£I◇I-1

    Get PDF
Syllogistic reasoning plays an important role in natural language information processing. In order to provide a consistent interpretation for Aristotelian modal syllogistic, this paper firstly proves the validity of the syllogism ◇A£I◇I-1, and then takes it as the basic axiom to derive the other 37 valid modal syllogisms on the basis of some reasoning rules in classical propositional logic, the transformation between any one of Aristotelian quantifiers and its three negative quantifiers, the symmetry of the Aristotelian quantifier some and no, and some relevant definitions and facts. In other words, there are reducibility between the modal syllogism ◇A£I◇I-1 and the other 37 valid modal syllogisms. There are infinitely many modal syllogism instances in natural language corresponding to every valid modal syllogism, thus this study has important practical significance and theoretical value for natural language information processing in computer science

"Keeping a Safe Confession Distance between Strangers": The Spatial Structure of Social Accessibility in Networked Communities and Risk Avoidance of Stranger Confessions

    Get PDF
This study focuses on the spatial structure of stranger social accessibility in networked communities and risk avoidance when socializing with strangers. Using Confession Wall as an example, this study contends that community social media fosters new connections by compensating for accessibility issues between strangers in local communities through flexible mediation of online and offline social interactions. This connectivity minimizes the costs and risks of emotional interactions between strangers in semi-acquaintance communities. This compensation for social accessibility highlights the value of digital media, especially community social media as a geomedia, in energizing communities and facilitating interactions between strangers. This is crucial in understanding the emotional interactions between strangers and how they are mediated by community social media in settings where acquaintances and complete strangers intermingle

    Get PDF
Reputation studies have gained attention tremendously as a significant area of research in corporate communication and business-related studies. Universities today have realized the importance of having a solid reputation to attract their stakeholders, mainly the students (customers) as they are the largest stakeholder for the survival of the university. This study aims to investigate the predicting factors of tangible and intangible resources and their impacts on the university reputation of a private university in Klang Valley from the student’s perspective. The study applied Resource-Based View Theory as an underpinning theory to explain these relationships. The study applied a quantitative survey design and generated 400 valid responses. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. The findings revealed that tangible resources (university logo, university facilities) and intangible resources (university heritage, university image) are the predictors of the university's reputation, where university heritage appears to be a prominent predictor among the other determinants. The current study contributed to the corporate communication and marketing scholarship by clarifying the gaps between image and reputation as two different constructs. This has called upon the management and marketing department of the private university to pay attention to the determinants highlighted, especially the heritage of the university as it is a unique selling point for the institution to differentiate from its rivals. Conclusion, implications, and suggestions for future study were also discussed
