Communicating Health Through Images: How Social Media Visuals Shape Body Comparison in Chinese Young Women
Social media has intensified appearance-related pressures among young women, especially in cultures that idealize thinness. In China, the widespread circulation of idealized body imagery online poses challenges to women's body satisfaction and self-perception. This study explores how different types of social media images influence appearance-based social comparison from a media and health communication perspective. A between-subjects experimental design was employed with 369 female Chinese university students randomly assigned to view one of five image types: thin-ideal posed, thin-ideal functional, full-figured posed, full-figured functional, or neutral scenery. After exposure, participants completed a measure of appearance comparison. ANOVA and post-hoc analyses showed that participants exposed to images of human models—regardless of body type or pose—reported significantly higher appearance comparison levels than those who viewed neutral scenery. No significant differences were found between the four model image groups. Findings suggest that the presence of human figures alone may trigger appearance comparison, highlighting the powerful visual influence of media content. This study offers practical insights into digital image design and supports the inclusion of neutral, non-human visuals in media strategies aimed at promoting healthier self-image among young women

‘Our Family Is Forever Broken’: A Discourse Study on Victim Impact Statements from George Floyd’s Case
Victim Impact Statements (VIS) facilitate victims’ participation in the judicial process by enabling them to speak out the harm they have sustained. It also serves as a form of testimony for judges and jurors in making legal decisions. Employing discourse information theory and transitivity system, this paper aims to examine how VIS fulfill their dual objectives as a means to relieve grief for the victim’s families and serving as verbal testimony in court. To this end, this paper analyzes how ideational meanings are realized through linguistic choices and information structures in three VIS from George Floyd’s case, and further explores their perceived impact through an analysis of audience responses. Findings reveal that the three VIS exhibit similar information structures and process type distributions, which are predominately fact-oriented and then effective in expressing grief. Moreover, the audience show strong empathy towards the victim’s families and widely criticize the defendant and his mother for lacking remorse and apology, which may offer indirect insight into how such statements may influence judicial perceptions. This paper provides a linguistic perspective on how VIS function as tools of emotional expression and judicial reference, influencing perceptions of justice within the court and in broader social contexts
Impact of Media Exposure on Environmental Legal Literacy and-Pro Environmental Behaviors Among University Students
This study discussed how much media exposure contributes to environmental legal literacy and pro-environmental behavior among university students in Saudi Arabia. It adopted a quantitative design through the administration of a structured questionnaire to 120 respondents purposively selected from the law and media student cohorts. The data revealed, by independent samples t-test analysis, that the environmental awareness and pro-environmental behavior were significantly higher in the media students compared to their counterparts studying law (MD = 25.36, p < 0.001). Indeed, such results would advocate that media channels are powerful instruments toward ecological responsibility as well as raising legal literacy levels among university students. Still, they demonstrate such behavior to a lesser degree due to curricular constraints in the learning process of matters relating to the environment, on ecological responsibility, and the role of clear legal guidance in enhancing its effects. These findings advocate the combination of media and legal education for raising environmental consciousness and sustaining pro-environmental behavior. Advancing the level of environmental awareness requires ecological standards to be implemented by the whole society so that the general public becomes acquainted with the standards of sustainability principles and practices

Perceived Trust and Perceived Value’s Influence on Consumers’ Purchase Intention in Otome Games
Otome games, targeting female audiences through romantic narratives, have gained prominence in China, exemplified by titles like Love and Deepspace that generate substantial revenues. Despite their commercial success, research on consumer behavior in this niche market remains limited, particularly regarding factors influencing purchase intentions for digital and physical products. This study addresses this gap by examining how perceived value and perceived trust shape purchase intentions. Using a quantitative approach, the researchers collected data from Otome game players via questionnaires and analyzed it using SPSS. Results demonstrate that perceived value exerts a significant positive influence on purchase intentions for both product categories, whereas perceived trust shows no statistically meaningful impact. These findings indicate that Otome game consumers prioritize experiential value over trust-based considerations when making purchasing decisions. The study contributes to the understanding of female-centric gaming markets by highlighting perceived value’s critical role in driving consumer behavior. Practically, it recommends that game developers concentrate on enhancing value-driven elements, such as narrative depth, character development, and exclusive content, to stimulate sales, rather than allocating resources to trust-building mechanisms
A New Screening Tool for the Early Identification of Risk Factors for the Development of Reading Problems in Kindergarten and First Grade Students
Early diagnosis of reading disorders is essential for intervention and later academic success. A tablet-based, group-administered screening measure, Risk Factor Screener for Reading (RiFS-R), identifies students at-risk for Phonics and/or Phonological Awareness difficulties. All students entering kindergarten should have already mastered the skills reflected in the RiFS-R. Students (n=657) in kindergarten or first grade completed the RiFs-R during the school day. Composite scores indicated that 42% of the 384 kindergarten students showed risk factors in Phonics, and 84% had risk factors in Phonological Awareness. Of the 273 1st graders screened, 32% showed risk factors for Phonics, and 70% showed risk factors for Phonological Awareness. Findings suggested that most students in kindergarten and 1st grade were already behind when they started the academic year, indicating that widespread screening would provide important information for early childhood curricula
Online Learning Environments as Spaces for Inter-Institutional Dialogue and Interaction: A Best Practice between University Students and Second Chance School Learners
This article presents a best practice implemented in an online course during the winter semester of the 2020–2021 academic year at the School of Early Childhood Education (TEPAE) in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. As part of the course Education and Lifelong Learning, available online communication and collaboration tools were utilized to foster connection and interaction between university students enrolled in the course and four adult learners from the Second Chance School (SDE) of Chania, Crete. The screening of a documentary in the undergraduate course—featuring the motivations and experiences of four female learners attending the SDE—served as a trigger for initiating a meaningful exchange of thoughts and emotions between the learners of the two educational institutions. The primary experiences of the SDE learners depicted in the video, and the secondary experience of the university students watching it, led to written communication and interaction between the two groups, that cultivated mutual understanding and critical reflection. The data, analyzed through thematic analysis, were drawn from the e-learning platform used by TEPAE and the written texts sent by the four SDE learners to the university students. Findings show that well-designed online learning environments can foster emotional engagement, empathy, critical reflection, and meaningful learner interaction within higher education learning communities as well as beyond institutional boundaries
