    Capstone ESL Portfolio

    No full text
Teaching and Learning Department capstone projectThis ESL Portfolio demonstrates my understanding of how to become a qualified teacher to best serve culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) English language learners (ELL). I reflect upon the theoretical knowledge that I have learned during the two years’ study at Peabody College, Vanderbilt University and also my practical teaching experiences. With the reflection, I develop my vision of teaching that help ELLs achieve academic success. This Portfolio consists of three parts: 1) philosophy of teaching, 2) TESOL standards for ESL/EFL teachers and 3) implications, challenges, and final reflections. In the first part, I state my philosophy of teaching under the theoretical framework of Vygotsky’s sociocultural view of learning. In the second part, I address the TESOL standards in seven domains, which are planning, instructing, assessing, identity and context, learning, content, and commitment and professionalism. For each domain, I demonstrate my understanding by explaining and evidences from the artifacts that I created for my course work. In the last part, I present my ideal vision of my future classroom, identity the challenges I will meet in real teaching, and also how I will make efforts to meet the challenges. This Portfolio not only shows my understanding of the knowledge I have gained through course work, but also my passion and efforts to become a successful ELL teacher.Department of Teaching and LearningPeabody College of Education and Human Developmen

Rejecting Reason and Embracing Modernized Art: How Victory Over the Sun Revolutionized the Russian Avant-Garde

    No full text
The elemental makeup and design of the Russian futurist anti-opera play, Victory Over the Sun, set an artistic precedence during the years leading up to the Russian Revolution. The Russian Avant-Garde movement, which played a pivotal role in Victory Over the Sun's entrance into the artistic field, utilized numerous mediums in order to create such a piece. By the combined efforts of a librettist, artist, and musician, the genesis of Victory was born, thus shaping a parallel revolution to that in Russia

Wiedervereinigung oder Anschluss?: The effects of Reunification in former East Germany

    No full text
This paper examines the structural changes in East German institutions that occurred in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) in the years following German Reunification and how they represented a western "takeover" rather than a honest East-West integration. We delve into the long-term impacts of these changes. Finally, we conclude that such West German policies had a detrimental effect on eastern Germany today

Defying Capitalism Through a Reimagined World of School

Teaching and Learning Department capstone projectThis paper argues against the sense of inescapable reality engendered by capitalism and discusses how playing out a re-imagined reality at school could defy this world. I utilize the concept of “figured worlds” as a lens to understand how constructed perceptions of reality define the contours of our activity and what we deem possible. I then analyze the figured world of capitalism in relation to that of school and argue that the recent interest in promoting creativity at school is unlikely to challenge capitalism. Instead, I posit "playing out" re-imagined realities as a means that could transform our perception of what is possible by providing the opportunity to experience alternative spaces. I end my paper with my vision of a designed figured world of school that could expose the shortcomings of capitalism and provide students with alternative ways to think about realizing their lives.Vanderbilt UniversityDepartment of Teaching and LearningPeabody College of Education and Human Developmen

Implications of Effortful Control and Negative Affectivity in the Persistence and Recovery of Stuttering

    No full text
Explores the effect that aspects of temperament, specifically effortful control and negative affectivity, have on the persistence and recovery of childhood stuttering. PSY 4999 - Honors Thesis - Walden, TedraThe present study investigated the differences in Negative Affectivity and Effortful Control in the presence and absence of stuttering. A Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) measured the stuttering-like disfluencies (SLDs) of 92 preschool-aged participants at two separate time points (i.e. time point 1 and time point 2). The participants were then divided into four stutter groups: children who did not stutter at either time point (CWNS), children who stuttered at both time points (Persistent), children who stuttered at time point 1 but did not stutter at time point 2 (Recovered), and children who did not stutter at time point 1 but stuttered at time point 2 (Transitional). Results indicated that at time point 1, both the Recovered and the Persistent group had significantly lower scores of Effortful Control on the Children’s Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ) than the CWNS group. Additionally, both the Persistent and the Transitional groups had significantly higher Negative Affectivity scores on the CBQ at time point 1 than at time point 2, but the other groups did not.Vanderbilt UniversityPsychologyCollege of Arts and ScienceThesis completed in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the Honors Program in Psychological Science

The search for M-M Dwarf Eclipsing Binary Systems

    No full text
An account of our search for, and discovery of an M-M Dwarf Eclipsing Binary system, the second brightest known, in an effort to provide more data to the literature in the hope of using this data set to fix stellar models.Using data from the Kilodegree Extremely Little Telescope (KELT) project, we performed a survey of 2028 known M Dwarf stars in the KELT footprint for M-M Dwarf eclipsing binaries (EBs). After searching 2028 Mdwarf stars, we Follow up observation of our best target’s eclipse events confirmed our hypothesis, and further Spectroscopic and Radial Velocity (RV) data allowed us to model the system. In this paper, we overview our survey and report the discovery and analysis of a new double-lined M-M eclipsing binary system, KS20C055996. This system is the second brightest M-M EB known (V 13.9) with M1 = 0.47 M and M2 = 0.38 M , orbiting on a period of 1.11 days. KS20C055996 provides a unique opportunity to study Very Low Mass Stars (VLMS) and further compare observational results with current theoretical models of low mass stellar interiors.Vanderbilt UniversityDepartment of Physics and AstronomyCollege of Arts and Scienc

Students' Mathematical Beliefs Implicitly Learned Through Assessment

    No full text
Teaching and Learning Department capstone projectStudents come to beliefs about what mathematics is through a host of factors. One of these is through the way that they are assessed. Through summative, standardized achievement tests, students are evaluated on what it is they know in mathematics. The resulting evaluation tells students how well they learned the material. The grades they get let them know how “good” they are at math. And yet, this is not necessarily true. Assessments do not fully evaluate students’ mathematical knowledge. Assessments fall short of this, especially in the vision of mathematics that reform movements are calling for. And as students continue to take tests throughout their years in public schools – as they take tests to go to be placed in advanced or remedial classes, tests to enter into college, or to simply just pass their current class – they come to implicitly learn what “counts” as knowing mathematics. Students have come to believe that math is about following rules, answering quickly, and getting the right answer. Interestingly, reform mathematics calls for a shift away from all of these things. However, these reform movements are struggling to take hold in a society that has attached even more high stakes to tests – tests that still reward rule following, answering quickly, and getting the right answer. This paper looks at what reform mathematics calls for and juxtaposes this with what students come to believe about mathematics through assessment. It ends with a discussion of what an alternative, reform mathematics assessment might value and what all of this means for my practice as a teacher.Department of Teaching and LearningPeabody College of Education and Human Developmen

Designing Opportunities for Family Engagement within Elementary Schools Serving Latino Immigrant Populations

    No full text
Teaching and Learning Department Capstone ProjectLatino immigrant students and families are among the fastest growing populations in the United States, but are among the most academically vulnerable groups. Though they initially enter the country brimming with hope and optimism surrounding their hopes for their children’s educations, Latino families quickly become frustrated with and disengaged from their children’s schools. This capstone explores the particular challenges faced by Latino immigrant families as they learn to navigate American elementary school systems as well as their particular strengths that enhance their children’s chances for academic success. This capstone also proposes that teachers and schools engage in culturally responsive practices in order to better engage Latino immigrant families in school and thus assist in their transition into vibrant, active members of American society.Department of Teaching and LearningPeabody College of Education and Human Developmen
