Tracking the Trajectories of Peer Victimization and Negative Self-Cognitions in Children: A Longitudinal Approach to Approximating Causality

Dr. David Cole labThis study investigates the effect of targeted peer victimization (TPV) on negative self-cognitions as a function of victimization type through a three-wave longitudinal study. Measures of TPV and cognitions were collected from 956 students equally distributed through grades three through eight. Two types of TPV were analyzed: physical peer victimization, which occurs when a person is controlled or injured by physical means, and relational peer victimization, which includes acts or statements intended to harm peer relationships and social acceptance. Obtained results are as follows: (a) both negative self-cognitions and TPV have high rates of stability over time; (b) while both genders experience higher levels of relational victimization than physical victimization, females experience more relational victimization than males do, and males experience more physical victimization than females do; and (c) relational victimization was more related to changes in depressive self-cognitions than was physical victimization. However, neither type of PV was significant after controlling for prior levels of the cognitive variable. First observation of the direct detection of positive D-meson into anti-K-long + 3 pions and negative D-meson into K-long + 3 pions with the Fermilab FOCUS experiment
No full textIn this thesis the decays of positive D-mesons into neutral anti-K-mesons and
three charged pions and of negative D-mesons into neutral K-mesons and three
charged pions are reconstructed in both long and short neutral K-meson states.
The data were taken with the Fermilab FOCUS spectrometer. This constitutes the
first observation of these decays in the long K-meson mode. We detail
the cuts necessary to find the branching ratio for the K-long to K-short
modes for both positive and negative D-mesons, show that the ratio is 0.89,
and detail further work that remains to be done. The K-long mode is
reconstructed using the D-meson flight direction, the direction of the
charged pions, and the energy deposited in the hadron calorimeter.
The K-short decay is reconstructed directly using tracking information in

No full textTeaching and Learning Department Capstone ProjectThrough the collection of the life stories, this research explores the college application process of two undocumented students in Nashville, Tennessee in order to examine ways in which teachers and college counselors can positively impact the educational attainment of this population. The paper first explores the complex financial and social incentives for increasing the educational attainment of undocumented students on both personal and public levels. It then introduces Laura and Amanda, two undocumented students who have successfully completed the college application process and enrolled in postsecondary institutions.
