The Maker Movement: Lessons for Educators
Teaching and Learning Department Capstone projectAs we have moved from an industrial to an information economy, there has been interest in fostering different kinds of skills in American schools. These “twenty-first century” competencies include creativity, innovation, troubleshooting and collaboration, which contrast with the “factory skills” model that remains prevalent in our school system. This older conception of learning stems from school’s history as an institution and no longer aligns with our present societal values. Out-of-school learning environments offer effective alternative models to traditional curriculum and assessment. The Maker Movement is one such example which successfully offers socially and technologically active and interested youth opportunity to learn through authentic, meaningful tasks. As an ethos, it serves as a “doorway in” to developing new interests. Maker Spaces can serve teens as “third spaces” between home and school where students can develop a unique sense of place with their peers and develop interests. Early evidence suggests that teens who are engaged in interest-driven making activities demonstrate greater constructive, critical and social dispositions and are more likely to be successful in college and active in their communities. Emittance and entropy of electron beams
Creating high-brightness electron beams, which have many practical
applications, is done with cathodes in regions with large electric
field by field emission. The brightness is high when the current is
high and the volume of the beam in phase space is small. An estimate
of the phase space volume is the rms emittance. The simulations
described in this report show that the beam emitted by a gated diamond
field emitter of the type fabricated at Vanderbilt has an exquisitely
small emittance, on the order of a few nm. This is probably too small
to measure. The rms emittance is generally thought to be constant for
a beam or increasing in the presence of aberrations in the beam
optics, but simulations show that this is not true. The rms emittance
rises and falls according to the geometry that surrounds the beam.
The entropy of an electron beam can be calculated, and should be
constant if done in six dimensional phase space, and approximately
constant in four dimensions. Calculations show that the entropy is not
constant in two nor four dimensions. Rather, the entropy changes over
time with a shape similar to how the emittance changes, which includes
a local maxima at the entrance to an aperture and minima on either
side. It is not clear if the fault is with the calculations or
theory. To our knowledge, this is the first time that the entropy of a
particle beam has been computed and used in a quantitative
fashion. Future research should explore the applications and

Delay and Its Benefits for Judicial Rulemaking Under Scientific Uncertainty
article published in law reviewThe Supreme Court’s increasing use of science and social science in its decision-making has a rationalizing effect on law that helps ensure that a rule will have its desired effect. But resting doctrine on the shifting sands of scientific and social scientific opinion endangers legal stability. The Court must be be responsive, but not reactive, to new scientific findings and theories, a difficult balance for lay justices to strike. This Article argues that the Court uses delay — defined as refusing to make or change a rule in light of new scientific arguments at time one, and then making or changing the rule because of the same arguments at time two — as a tool to improve decision-making amidst scientific uncertainty.
Using the Court’s antitrust jurisprudence as an example, this Article shows that delay can have a salutary effect on rule-making because it allows the Court to use academic consensus (that either develops or matures between times one and two) as a signal of scientific reliability. As a conservatizing device, delay operates in the common law tradition, but it also avoids some of the failures associated with traditional common law features like stare decisis and incrementalism. The Article concludes by contrasting Supreme Court decision-making with an area of law where delay is impractical or undesirable. In toxic tort litigation, where the goals of deterrence and compensation preclude the use of delay in the face of new scientific arguments, the law pays the price in uncertainty and error

Cause to Believe What? The Importance of Defining a Search's Object--Or, How the ABA Would Analyze the NSA Metadata Surveillance Program
article published in law reviewCourts and scholars have devoted considerable attention to the definition of probable cause and reasonable suspicion. Since the demise of the “mere evidence rule” in the 1960s, however, they have rarely examined how these central Fourth Amendment concepts interact with the “object” of the search. That is unfortunate, because this interaction can have significant consequences. For instance, probable cause to believe that a search “might lead to evidence of wrongdoing” triggers a very different inquiry than probable cause to believe that a search “will produce evidence of criminal activity.” The failure to address the constraints that should be imposed on the object of a search has particularly acute implications in the context of records searches. This article explores the ramifications of this gap in Fourth Amendment jurisprudence both generally and in connection with the NSA’s metadata program, with particular attention to how the American Bar Association’s Standards on Government Access to Third Party Records, the topic of the symposium for which this article was written, resolve the relevant issues
The impact of children's gender and victimization history on self-cognition and perceived meanness
This paper is a cross-sectional study, it explores the gender difference in self-cognition and perceived meanness after 3rd- 6th graders are exposed to peer victimization audio recordings. Course PSY-PC 2990, Honors Research, Professor Megan SaylorThis study examined gender differences in self-cognitions and perceived meanness following exposure to audio recordings of peer victimization. A second goal of the study was to examine the interaction between victimization experiences and gender on perceived meanness and resultant self-cognitions after listening to peer victimization scenarios ranging from mild to severe victimization. A total of 571 third through sixth graders participated in this cross-sectional study. Results revealed: (a) main effect for victimization, peer victimization experiences are associated with greater negative self-cognitions after listening to the peer victimization scenarios and greater perceived meanness of the scenarios (b) girls have greater negative cognitions after listening to the scenarios and think the scenarios are meaner than do boys and (c) there is no interaction between victimization and gender on perceived meanness and negative self-cognitions.
