Implications for Intervention Strategies as it Relates to Math Anxiety

    No full text
Teaching and Learning Department capstone project Math anxiety is only one of many factors that influence math achievement. To increase math achievement in learners, math anxiety must be reduced, but more intervention strategies must be enacted as well to combat all the internal and external factors contributing to math achievement EDUC 3620 Capstone Seminar Professor Kristen NealDepartment of Teaching and LearningPeabody College of Education and Human Developmen

What Do Urban Residential Schools Afford Us?

    No full text
Teaching and Learning Department capstone projectChildren in urban neighborhoods all over the country struggle with challenges in their communities. For some time, the solution has been wrap-around services and increased support for communities who need it most. In contrast, a new trend arising is that which focuses not on community revitalization but instead on removing children with the highest need and placing them in urban boarding schools. In theory, these schools replicate successful traditional boarding models and help students not only prepare for life in college but also to develop the skills they need in leadership and career readiness. This capstone looks first at the traditional boarding school model and examines the four principles of successful elite boarding schools in student preparation: global academic curriculum, connection to higher learning, perpetuation of a status-culture model with an emphasis on tradition and soft skill development. It then considers specific challenges that urban learners face and barriers often encountered by students. Continuing from there, I examine how urban boarding schools such as the SEED schools merge high-needs urban learners with traditional boarding school methods and conclude with recommendations for further implementation.Department of Teaching and LearningPeabody College of Education and Human Developmen

RTI and Phonics Instruction: Best Practices for In-class Interventions

    No full text
Teaching and Learning Department capstone projectAccording to the International Reading Association (2010), now called the International Literacy Association, Response to Intervention (RTI) was developed upon the idea of prevention instead of failure. It is an inclusive, systematic, and multi-tiered approach in identifying students with language and literacy needs and supporting these students with differentiated assessment and instruction. Because RTI is a comprehensive, systematic approach, teachers and staff providing interventions require professional development and training. This capstone explores the RTI framework, its place in literacy instruction, and the two approaches to RTI assessments: the standard treatment protocol approach and the problem-solving approach. RTI begins with assessments to identify students who are at-rish for reading delays, as well as integrates it throughout the process in using assessment data to drive instructional decisions. This capstone also explores and current best practices teachers can implement in the classroom for RTI Tier 2 interventions, specifically in phonics. Phonics instruction has been the subject of much contention over the years, with differing views on how and when to teach it. Researchers debated over how explicit or implicit phonics instruction should be, or how much emphasis should be given to phonics versus meaning making. This capstone examines the discourse surrounding phonics instruction and provides instructional strategies in the context of small group, RTI instruction using a systematic, explicit approach.Department of Teaching and LearningPeabody College of Education and Human Developmen

    Environmental Law in Austerity

    No full text
article published in law reviewGiven the political dynamic in play at the national level, with the country evenly split between Republicans and Democrats, and incumbent Tea Party and other politicians highly critical of the EPA, there is no reason to think this trend in decreasing environmental budgets will change any time soon. In some states the trend is even more pronounced. Fiscal austerity has become the new norm. The interesting questions are whether this matters for environmental law, how it matters, and what it means going forward

    Capstone ELL Portfolio

    No full text
Teaching and Learning Department Capstone ProjectThis capstone portfolio demonstrates my professional knowledge and practices of serving English language learners (ELL) in international settings. In this portfolio, there are three major sections. In the first section, I will present my philosophy of teaching to state my beliefs of teaching English language learners based upon the theoretical framework that informs my instructional decisions and practices. In the second section, I will provide artifacts in my graduate studies to demonstrate my understanding of the qualities and practices of an effective ELL teacher according to the eight domains of standards for ESL/EFL teachers, including planning, instructing, assessing, identity and context, language proficiency, learning, content, and commitment and professionalism. Each domain consists of my own interpretation of its standard along with one to two artifacts as evidence of my understanding and competence. In the third section, I will offer the implications for future teaching in which I present my reflection of the collection of my work, my visions of applying theories to practices, and questions and directions for my continuous professional development.Department of Teaching and LearningPeabody College of Education and Human Developmen
