T he Winter 's Tale

DIRECTOR
MICHAEL FUTCHER
Michael is a freelance director, writer, actor, dramaturg, acting coach, and is also the Co-Artistic Director, with his 
wife, Helen Howard, of the acclaimed Matrix Theatre. 
Over the last 30 years Michael has worked on more than 100 professional stage productions in various 
capacities, and has appeared on screen in a variety of roles. He has been the recipient of numerous Queensland 
and national awards and nominations including a Green Room Award and an AWGIE Nomination for his play 
A Beautiful Life, a Playlab Award for his outstanding contribution to Queensland writing, two APACA Drover’s 
Awards for the Shake and Stir touring productions of Animal Farm and 1984, twelve Matilda Awards, and a 
Helpmann Award Nomination for best touring production – The Kursk. 
Michael’s stage directing highlights include the multi-award-winning production of A Beautiful Life (Matrix Theatre/
La Boite/Brisbane Festival), which toured nationally in 2000; The Kursk (Matrix Theatre/Metro Arts/Critical 
Stages), which toured nationally in 2009; Matrix Theatre’s The Wishing Well (presented by La Boite); Grimm 
Tales, Rabbit Hole and The Glass Menagerie for Queensland Theatre Company; Pale Blue Dot, The Drowning 
Bride (La Boite); Shake and Stir’s Animal Farm and 1984, which toured nationally in 2013 and 2014 respectively, 
and Tequila Mockingbird, Dracula and Endgame. The King and the Corpse! (Matrix Theatre and The Brisbane 
Festival); 1001 Nights (Zen Zen Zo/QTC/Qld Music Festival); Treasure Island (Matrix Theatre/QTC/The Brisbane 
Festival); Piano Lessons with Anna Goldsworthy (Qld Music Festival/Metro Arts/Matrix), which toured Queensland 
in 2013 and nationally in 2015; and Dirty Apple – a youth opera (co-produced by Opera Qld, Qld Music Festival 
and Backbone Youth Theatre). 
Since 1990, Michael has also had a close association with Queensland’s leading training institutions as director 
and tutor, including QUT (directing 15 productions), USQ, Griffith University, and JCU. Most recently Michael has 
worked as Acting Coach on the NITV series Grace Beside Me and the acclaimed SBS comedy series, The Family 
Law. He has also directed Enemies (2017) and The Merchant of Venice (2016) for QUT, as well as the National 
tour of Shake and Stir’s Dracula, and Metro Arts/Matrix’s Piano Lessons.

crowd in the foyer. 
• Whilst doors were opened and the audience was entering, Ms Yun informed Ms Gordon that the wrong QLab file was running 
for vision.  Ms Yun reported that this QLab file was outdated and would not work with the current version of the show.  Ms 
Gordon requested the vision department exit this file and open the correct one.  After doing this, the vision system lost 
connection with the projectors, causing the projector surfaces to go black and blue.  Ms Gordon requested the vision 
department conduct a system reset and power cycle.  Once this was complete, it was discovered that the ‘MELT System’ 
projector would not reconnect and that no vision could be played on the surface above the Control Booth.  All content was 
reallocated to different surfaces and Surface 1 was shuttered. 
• Due to the above incident, the audience was held in the space for far longer than intended, and Ms O’Neill and Mr Brumpton 
decided an announcement should be made.  At 1812 Mr Brumpton addressed the audience and informed them that we were 
experiencing some technical difficulties and that the show would start shortly. 
• Once gaining confirmation that all vision content was reassigned, Ms Gordon gave clearance to Ms Penglis to close doors, 
and the performance began. 
• There was lots of laughter throughout the performance, with the biggest hits being: 
- “Most expensive habitats on earth…” 
- “Often alien species, the director.” 
- “Ever punctual performer” (and accompanying vision) 
- “Strange gentlemen named Lee & Rosco” 
- “The always optimistic and exceedingly bubbly, Tony Brumpton” 
- “Well that wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be.” 
- Normanby video package: “Why I managed to get here in only 2 minutes and 10 seconds” 
• Audience feedback from the event was very positive.  Many graduates reported that when they spoke to industry 
professionals post event, that they sympathised with our technical difficulties and believed we handled the complications well. 
• Alison Jones’s family passed along their gratitude to all Technical Production students and staff for honouring Alison with such 
a wonderful event.  Her mother said ‘Alison would have loved this show.  It was so much fun’. 
• A post-launch event was held at the Normanby Hotel after the exhibition closed.  This too was well received and attended.
STAGE MANAGEMENT
• The changeover between Ms Gordon and Mr Norris was physically a bit clunky, but no cues were missed.
LIGHTING
• All cues ran as plotted.  Good show.

STANDING BY 2017 Launch Event Performance Report 
SOUND
• Throughout the performance, Ms Gordon requested that the audio levels be raised to accomodate for amount of bodies in 
the space.  Mr Norris made this request as well during the 3rd Year Headshot Video.  Sound department actioned.
VISION
• During pre-show, whilst the audience was entering, it was discovered that the wrong QLab file was open and running.  See 
GENERAL for more information.  This led to no vision being displayed on Surface 2 (above the control booth), including the 
live feeds and video packages. 
• When VIS 35 fired, the live camera footage cut from Surface 1.  Ms Gordon noticed and requested it be brought back up, 
which the vision department did.  
• The camera feeds were streamed to the foyer throughout the performance.  They were also recorded to be uploaded at a 
later date. 
‘PERFORMANCE’ ELEMENTS
• The revolve did not work on Revolve Cue 1, causing the camera feed to show a stationary revolve for 2 sentences. 
• The ‘quick change’ was a success and was completed well before the live feed cut out on this section.
EXHIBITION
• Due to the projector difficulties, the show calls on Surface 2 did not run during exhibition.  The sound for the show calls was 
still running though. 
• A patron reported that the sound for the show calls was painfully loud through the headphones.  Mr Ogilvie adjusted this. 
• The exhibition closed at approximately 8pm.
