Creating Animated Diagrams with Flash
Photographs, illustrations and diagrams have long been used as a way to support and enhance textual material. The emergence of the Web as a teaching platform has focused the attention of educators on the use of multimedia as an instructional medium. Sound, video and animation are the primary components of multimedia. Animation can be a powerful tool for introducing concepts and processes. An animated diagram can support the text or go beyond the written explanation. Adding motion to a process diagram or an illustration, which shows how something works, can help to explain difficult concepts. Although most educators avoid multimedia packages due to their expense and complexity, Flash is a great tool for the beginner. Flash offers a quick way to create simple animations to be used on the Web
Message from the Chair
One simply has to attend a Division conference to receive “leadership and guidance” from successful educators from all around the country. For those who are unable to attend, the EDG Journal is our outlet “to inform the membership of current developments.” As Division Chair, I?m excited to share news of division activities with you. The Midyear meeting in Arizona was great on all accounts. The facilities, the papers, the activities and the attendees made it an exciting experience. It is always good to get together and exchange ideas with our peers and learn something new. One of the things that really impressed me was the range of paper topics. For the last few years we?ve been trying to expand our vision of engineering graphics by broadening the range of issues relevant to graphics educators. As a result, we heard presentations on animation, virtual reality, instructional multimedia, grant writing, statistics analyses and assessment, as well as traditional graphics topics. We are growing in scope and trying to broaden our membership to reflect this change. The openness and friendliness of Division members is the best marketing tool we have. As members, all we have to do is invite prospective members to attend one of our meetings and get involved. Non-members who attend the conference get a free one-year membership to the Division, so invite someone to attend the next meeting! This Spring, we will elect a Director of Membership for the first time. For all of the members who have served on the membership committee in the past thank you for your efforts and please continue to participate by supporting the new Membership Director in any way you can. Membership will continue to be a division priority as we hope to encourage young faculty to become involved to help shape the direction of the Division. This issue of the Journal represents the efforts of our new publication team. Eric Wiebe is the new Journal editor and his team includes Ted Branoff, Alice Scales and Aaron Clark. They welcome your paper submissions so please keep them coming. At the last Executive Board meeting we reviewed the Division Bylaws to review the changes approved by Division members in last years election. In reviewing the document for discussion, I was reminded of the objectives of the Division, which are as follows. • Provide leadership and guidance for those engaged in the teaching of conceptual design and graphical analysis and their use in industry. • Investigate matters relating to engineering graphics and to inform the membership of current developments. • Encourage the early participation of engineering students in the areas of graphics and design. • Promote, stimulate and provide opportunities for the professional interchange of ideas among the membership. The Division provides you with an outlet for professional development and scholarly endeavor. Become involved in any way you can and encourage others to explore the opportunities the Division can offer them as graphics educators
First Year Engineering Graphics Curricula in Major Engineering Colleges
There is a great variance in the amount of time devoted to basic graphics instruction and in the content of the courses among American engineering colleges. Nine universities were visited, classes attended, and syllabi reviewed with faculty. The commonalities and differences are analyzed and possible directions for graphics programs presented
Message from the Editor
Dear Members: It's hard to imagine how education will be affected by the increased use of the internet. As it gets easier and more cost effective to put information online, the growth rate continues to escalate. A recent report states that in one year the schools offering "degrees via computer" jumped from 15% to 34%. Things are moving very fast! The potential is great. The potential for reaching out to students located anywhere provides an opportunity for non-traditional students. The potential for modifying teaching techniques and developing new techniques provides an opportunity for educators. The potential for collaboration provides an opportunity to share resources and expertise with industry. The potential is great. The devices for incorporating sound, video and live-action or all available and ready for us to use. Just as we experienced the transition from manual drafting to CAD we are now exploring new territory. Soon, we will see more presentations and papers dealing with theses issues at our yearly meetings. Once again, we can learn from each others successes and failures, get tips on how to get started and be pointed toward resources by those who have been there ahead of us. This is a promise opportunity to put forth a team effort. Colleagues across the country can share information, resources and expertise to develop courses beyond the limitations of their campus. Application of 3D CAD for Basic Geometric Elements in Descriptive Geometry
This informal study integrates the solutions in descriptive geometry with an introduction to 3D CAD approach for dealing with the basic geometric elements. The basic elements include points, lines and planes as opposed to solids. Several problems in descriptive geometry were solved using both the 3D CAD approach and the traditional approach that requires successive auxiliary views based on orthographic projection. An evaluation of both approaches was conducted. It showed that the use of 3D CAD in descriptive geometry demonstrated the effectiveness in speed and accuracy, and did not limit the use of geometric and spatial reasoning
An Analysis of Engineering Design Graphics Journal Articles
An analysis was conducted of feature articles published in the EDGJ (Engineering Design Graphics Journal) and indexed later by ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center). After a spreadsheet was promulgated with data extracted from the ERIC database and validated with the aid of actual copies of the articles, the data were sorted and counted. The results indicated that the EDGJ is a non-core journal, that at least 40% of the articles published in the EDGJ and indexed later by ERIC fall within the scope of the EDGJ, and that select ideas are being propagated by a select group of authors that target a select audience
Message from the Chair
What can you do, as a contributing member of the division? The ASEE’s Engineering Design Graphics Division’s 59th Annual Mid-year Meeting was held in Williamsburg, Virginia on November 21-23, 2004. Over one hundred members and friends attended the meeting and enjoyed the benefits of exchanging ideas on teaching graphics and design, networking with our colleagues, and interacting with software vendors and publishers. And of course, we also enjoyed the hospitality of the historic village of Williamsburg, dining with authentic colonial fare, and discussions of politics and household affairs with patriots and loyalists alike. The opportunity to participate in these conferences is not the only benefit of membership in the EDG Division, but it is certainly one of the most often cited as reason for joining the Division. Our membership is drawn from engineering and technical universities and community/junior colleges throughout this country and from abroad. The Division promotes teaching, research, discussion, and communication in all forms and applications of technical graphics. Other benefits include our journal, which you are reading now. The EDG Journal provides a venue for refereed publication of your research. We sponsor the National Student Design Competition at the ASEE Annual Conference. Not only does membership in our division provide benefits, but it also comes with some responsibilities. According to the dictionary, a member is “one that belongs to a group or organization”, and we think of our membership in the Division in that sense. However, we also refer to members as specific structural units or body parts. Structural units function to support and strengthen the unit to which they belong. Body parts likewise have a specific and useful function. Likewise, members in a strong and healthy organization are expected to contribute to the work and mission of the group. What can you do, as a contributing member of the division? First, spread the word! Recruit! We need to include all graphics educators in our organization. If you are reading this message and enjoying our journal, but are not a member, I hope you will be encouraged to join. If you are already a member, encourage your colleagues to join. Plan now to bring a colleague to our next mid-year meeting in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on December 3-6, 2005. If you have contacts at other universities or local community colleges, invite them to one of our meetings, or share a copy of our journal with them. Even if their budgets and teaching schedules limit their conference attendance, they can still benefit from the exchange of ideas through publications and our website. Second, contribute! To the journal, to conferences, or to our zones pages (contact Alice Scales, [email protected]). I encourage all of you to submit papers to the journal, and incorporate the design competition into your freshman graphics course. Message from the Chair
I encourage you to take some time between meetings and make an effort to recruit a new colleague into the division. Support the journal by submitting papers and inviting new faculty to publish with us. Greetings to all from somewhere in Massachusetts. This is my first opportunity as Chair of the Division to communicate with you, the readers of the Journal. Eighteen months ago when I agreed to run for office as Vice Chair, I anticipated a leisurely year as Chair, being on sabbatical leave, doing some writing and working in industry. However, as is often the case, there are many changes in our lives and mine is no exception. Due to a change in my husband’s employment, we learned that we would be moving from our home of 23 years into a new (new to us, but actually a very old) house in Templeton, Massachusetts. We soon learned that this house, the parsonage of the First Church in Templeton, was built in about 1830 by a man named John Boynton, the founder of our alma mater and the school where I have been teaching for the past 20 years, WPI. Our move has caused us to reflect on our priorities and goals in life, and focus on where we are headed with a clear vision of what we need to accomplish in the next weeks, months and years. We had perhaps become complacent in our little home, building up a stockpile of “stuff” that collected dust and was rarely if ever used. It has been difficult and time-consuming to go through our cellar and attic and decide what to keep, to pass along, or to dump. There are the precious items that we are so attached to but won’t fit in the new house; it’s so hard to decide what to do with them. But most exciting of all is the opportunity to shop for new furniture that will fit our new home and lifestyle. And Bill’s new congregation is looking forward to his fresh ideas and enthusiasm in this new pastorate. Similarly, when I think about our profession and the Engineering Design Graphics Division, I see a more or less static situation. I’ve read through numerous messages from previous division chairs in my archive of EDG Journals, and several of them have noted the many changes in computer technology in the past two decades, especially in the area of graphics, with a charge to the members to change and update our curricula. But have we really responded to these changes as quickly as we could or should have? Are we still holding on to the familiar and comfortable course outlines that we have taught in the past? Have we simply computerized the old concepts, changing the tools, but not the message? How many of us have truly embraced solid modeling as the basis for our curriculum? And what about other forms of graphics and design? Are we taking full advantage of these new technologies in design as well as graphics? If we are not the champions of the use of tools such as computer graphics, technical animation and visualization, virtual reality, computer-based design and analysis tools, 3D rapid prototyping (the ultimate “graphics”!) then who will be? I challenge you all to step back and look at your courses and consider whether the content fulfills the needs of a new generation of designers and engineers. I think that this is particularly important, as a course in design graphics is often the first engineering course encountered by our freshman students. Over the past few years we have made strides towards increasing our membership and broadening the scope of topics discussed at our annual and mid-year meetings. As your chair, I encourage you to take some time between meetings and make an effort to recruit a new colleague into the division. Support the journal by submitting papers and inviting new faculty to publish with us. Get involved with one of our committees and help plan some of our future meetings or liaise with organizations outside the division on our behalf. All of these efforts will strengthen the division and help breathe new life into our ranks. I will be experimenting and finding new routes for my daily commute to WPI, and I encourage you all to make an effort to make a change in some small way that will steer our division onto a new and exciting path. Creative Thinking: The Generation of New and Occasionally Useful Ideas
Most of us admire the trait of creativity and many of us wish that we had more of this somewhat intangible trait. We encourage our students to be creative or tell them that they are not being creative enough, but how many of us actually foster the growth of creativity? Engineering and technology students often do not think of themselves as creative even though their occupations will require them to use a wide variety of problem solving skills in many different situations. If we accept that being creative is the means to produce and express new, novel and occasionally useful ideas then we should be able to apply this to our students. A creative thinker should be better equipped to find and define problems and implement the resulting solutions. There are almost as many theories about creative thinking as there are authors writing about the subject. This paper will examine some of the theories about creative thinking, the process, and some of the aspects of teaching and learning creativity
3-D Geometric Modeling for the 21st Century
There have been numerous and dramatic changes in graphics technologies used in engineering design during the last thirty years. Computer models that represent the geometric characteristics of parts and assemblies are used extensively in design, analysis and manufacturing. This paper briefly describes these new geometric models used in contemporary CAD software, including wireframe, surface, solid and parametric models. Their use in engineering design and analysis is reviewed. The impact of these new technologies on the engineering design graphics curriculum is discussed
