This research is concerned with craft production and consumption. The analysis of these two aspects brings important information for understanding how ancient state economies worked and for reconstructing ancient life ways at Miguel Alemán, the Conquista Campesina Complex and the Piñuela Complex. I carried out a quantitative analysis of the number of pots consumed and produced in the overall area and also in each household cluster. The richness of these ceramic assemblages provided information about hierarchical differences between the social groups and how these groups were distributed within the area studied.

Between 1867 and 1869 in the Chiapas Highlands of Mexico, indigenous people of the Tsotsil Mayan municipality of Chamula rebelled against the mixed-blood “ladinos” of the town of San Cristobal de Las Casas. According to “official history”, the indigenous people were accused of crucifying a child from Chamula on Holy Friday, 1868. This accusation may be compared with the “blood libel,” which was blamed on the Jews. In both cases, a child was said to be sacrificed through a ritual crime imitating the Passion of Christ, in which the spilled blood was consumed. The transference of the blood libel against the Jews to the indigenous people of Mexico begs us to ask whether the latter event as an isolated occurrence or a response to a more elaborate system of thought linking the “savage Indian” with the Jew, assassin of the Son of God.Entre 1867 y 1869 se vivió en Los Altos de Chiapas la rebelión de los indios chamulas contra los ladinos de San Cristóbal de Las Casas conocida como Guerra de Castas.
Here, we contribute to the debate surrounding the impact of international migration and remittances on agriculture. In 2011, we surveyed families with and without migrants in four rural communities in Chiapas regarding their farming practices. We also sampled agrobiodiversity on the land managed by a subset of each group. Contrary to our expectations, the results suggest that out-migration has not spurred agricultural abandonment or substantial changes in the crops planted. Our data suggest that migration and remittances can contribute to sustainable farming practices and food sovereignty.

By the year 1981 the Guatemalan State suffered a profound social crisis. The expansion of plantation production and military governments threatened the survival of indigenous communities in the highlands. In this work, we approach this crisis from the State concern about the confluence between community rebelliousness and guerrillas. In this way, we can understand the counterinsurgency plan as a process shown in the historical violent relationship between State and communities. Far away from the dichotomy of a war between guerrilla and a national army, we will see how the plantation and State forces created a counterrevolutionary synthesis against the upheaval of indigenous people.
In this study, we follow a script of open-ended questions to interview seven women and twelve men with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) living in poverty in the Soconusco region in the state of Chiapas. Family strategies are analyzed below to cover their material needs. Although the stigma associated with HIV and Human Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is present in your life, it was found that the extended family —parents, children, grandparents, uncles, grandchildren— of those people, after an adaptation process, play an important role to meet the needs for food, transportation and housing.
While suicide is a compelling phenomenon that has experienced substantial growth on a global and national scale, social studies on this topic are scarce. It is imperative to conduct more research on the subject, and to reflect and discuss viable analytical perspectives. In this article, I examine the social dimension of self-inflicted death in Río Grande and Cantioc in Chiapas, Mexico, through an ethnographical approach. Aware of the methodological difficulties involved in the construction of suicide data and the local causal explanations, I argue that an approach to both the historical context of a particular social space and the current living conditions of the population enables us to draw some correlations between social positions, tensions and conflicts, and suicide vulnerability.
In this collaboration I present different interpretations and actions generated around so-called “Chiapas-UN Agenda”, ideally based on the Millennium development goals. The strategy of social communication of the Government of the State generated a metonymic relation between this policy and the program of Sustainable Rural Cities. From an anthropological perspective, document knowledge and assessments as well as the behaviors of different agents that are aligned around divergent projects, both for and against these policies —Chiapas-UN Agenda and Sustainable Rural Cities—. There are displayed in these arenas of social policy different codes of political culture of the agents involved, which generates an “intense public action”.En esta colaboración presento diferentes interpretaciones y acciones en torno a la Agenda Chiapas-ONU, sustentada idealmente en los Objetivos de Desarrollo del Milenio.
