Testimonies of high school girls from the village of Yaxcabá are presented to show how these girls define their role as young women within their culture. Their perceptions and future projects, often in conflict with those of their elders, are part of a process of transformation of societal values and practice in this Mayan region.El tema de este artículo es el significado de ser mujer y ser joven en la cultura maya de Yucatán, México. Se presentan testimonios de muchachas de bachillerato del pueblo de Yaxcabá con el objetivo de conocer lo que para ellas significa ser mujer joven. Sus percepciones y sus proyectos de futuro se enmarcan en un campo de conflicto, en el que existe un enfrentamiento entre jóvenes y adultos para mantener o transformar los significados y las prácticas de ser joven

Get PDFIn this article I reflect on the relationship between culture, art and anti-racist feminist politics, based on my participation as a speaker in the Theater-Forum Gender and Racism held in Bogota in 2011. Through the analysis of two plays, and in light of theoretical reflections on the interconnections between sexism and racism, I discuss the interventionist role of feminist, antiracist theater, and consider such intervention as a way to raise awareness of racism and anti-feminism as experienced corporally by women. Finally, I look at theater as an aesthetic and political event with great potential for stimulating the questioning of colonial power relations and the mechanisms of classist, racist and sexist oppression.Se reflexiona sobre la relación entre cultura, arte y política feminista antirracista a partir de mi participación en el Teatro-Foro Género y Racismo (Bogotá, 2011). A través del análisis de dos obras de teatro y de reflexiones teóricas sobre las articulaciones entre sexismo y racismo, sugiero la posibilidad de pensar el teatro como una forma de intervención feminista antirracista, como una forma de crear conciencia sobre el racismo que experimentamos como mujeres y como cuerpos racializados. Retos y alternativas de la gestión local del agua en la periferia urbana de San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas
Get PDFIn this article, we analyze the social relationships that are established around water and forest resources, as well as the tensions and conflicts that are associated with this process in urban periphery contexts. We start from the study of the strategies and practices of access, supply, management and control of the water adopted by urban and rural actors that cohabit the periphery-urban areas of San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas. The results of this study are based on field work, in-depth interviews and participant observation carried out in the Los Alcanfores community. In the case presented, local management strategies have been pressured by social changes derived from population growth.Se analizan las relaciones sociales en torno al agua y los bosques, así como los conflictos asociados a este proceso en contextos periurbanos. Partimos del estudio de las estrategias y prácticas de acceso, abasto, manejo y control del agua adoptadas por actores urbanos y rurales que cohabitan las áreas periurbanas de San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas. Los resultados se basan en trabajo de campo, entrevistas a profundidad y observación participante en la comunidad de Los Alcanfores. Get PDFThis article examines the construction of transcultural spaces of otherness and identity processes in youth and musical experience. Being in touch with other speeches and environments allows young indigenous, transform their imaginary about everyday environments and how they fit into present realities. The Indian rock in Chiapas, a new musical form that fuses among young local sounds with the rhythms and harmonies of rock, is a resource to revalue their cultural belongings. As a recent identity phenomenon expands the horizons as to what indigenous youth and socio-cultural environments in which it operates.Se examina la producción de música rock indígena en Los Altos de Chiapas como reflejo de procesos de cambio identitario juvenil. Se muestra que tales procesos no son adopción (pasiva) de formas musicales que encuentran en su entorno o en medios de comunicación, sino procesos interculturales e intergeneracionales basados en sus raíces culturales en la búsqueda de su posicionamiento en tiempos de cambios radicales. Su música ha sido catalizadora, de oposición o de complementariedad. Uncanny Valley Project, una intervención ciberfeminista en la X Bienal Centroamericana
Get PDFThis article/testimony discusses a cyber-feminist intervention entitled Uncanny Valley Project, part of the 10th Biennial Centro-American celebration (2016). This intervention is analyzed from a critical close-up perspective of the "corporal" and "feminist", categories proposed by Tamara Diaz; the hypothesis of Uncanny Valley as put forth by Masahiro Mori will also be utilized. The intent is to explore how these ideas/interventions together with electronic music, function in the current period of crisis as a means to construct bodies that invent and innovate; concepts of performance and robotic esthetics as practiced by people interested in electronic music will be considered. As a result of this investigation, we hope to position this intervention within the Costa Rican electronic music movement, shedding light on the larger Central American context, and highlighting the contributions of its creators.Se reflexiona sobre la intervención ciberfeminista Uncanny Valley Project en la X Sonora de la Bienal Centroamericana (2016). Se analiza desde una "proximidad crítica, corporal y feminista", bajo la hipótesis del uncanny valley de Masahiro Mori, para exponer cómo ésta actúa sobre un presente en crisis, junto con la música electrónica en tanto vía para construer cuerpos de invención e innovación. Además, se explora la performatividad y la estética robótica practicadas por humanos dedicados a la música electrónica. El resultado permite identificar el fenómeno dentro de la música electrónica costarricense y darle visibilidad en el contexto centroamericano

Get PDFThis article offers a theoretical reflection on the polysemic concept of return and the relationship of migrants with their home territory. Based on the case study of a Nicaraguan municipality, it analyzes the dynamics of mobility and circulation from the perspective of scattered migration systems, considering the diversity of both the destinations and the duration of movements that occur within and outside Central America. The article seeks to show that the migrants’ understanding and interpretation of their return depend on multiple realities and experiences in Central America, . To this end, two concepts are discussed to enhance the debate on the link between circulation, territory and return: "reversibility" and "space resource".En este artículo se propone una reflexión teórica sobre el concepto polisémico de retorno y la relación de los migrantes con su territorio de origen. A partir del caso de un municipio nicaragüense, se analizan las dinámicas de movilidad y circulación desde los sistemas migratorios dispersos, considerando la diversidad de destinos y de temporalidades de desplazamiento dentro y fuera de la región centroamericana. Se busca demostrar que las lógicas de retorno abarcan realidades y experiencias múltiples dentro del proyecto migratorio. Con este objetivo, se discuten dos nociones sobre la articulación entre circulación, territorio y retorno: "reversibilidad" y "recurso espacial"
