Hayley Boxall on reimagining desistance from male-perpetrated intimate partner violence (CFBS seminar series)

    No full text
Despite decades of research, our understanding of intimate partner violence (IPV) desistance processes is very limited. In particular, understanding of the mechanisms that may account for why some men ‘stop’ abusing their partners and others persist, is under-developed. Because IPV occurs within a dyadic and domestic context, women who are subjected to IPV are not only in a unique position to observe their partner’s behaviours (and how they change over time), but also to implement strategies to initiate and support their partner’s desistance. Based on the analysis of 40 semi-structured interviews with female victims-survivors of male-perpetrated IPV (15 of whom experienced desistance for an average period of 12 months), this presentation discusses the nature and impact of strategies used by women to both mitigate their day-to-day risk of violence and support their partners’ long-term behavioural changes. The cognitive states of women are explored, including whether they were consciously attempting to bring about desistance and their motivations for doing so. Finally, the implications of the research for policy and practice and desistance theory more broadly are discussed

    No full text
Presented by the Social Innovation Research Institute at Swinburne. Globally, social isolation and loneliness in older age is a pressing societal concern. Older people in residential aged care are in the top risk bracket for experiencing social isolation and loneliness. In collaboration with Uniting NSW and The Salvation Army Aged Care, Jasmine Knox from the Social Innovation Research Institute co-designed a Social Connection Toolkit (e-learning, guide, and question set) with aged care staff and residents. This toolkit is currently being evaluated for its ability to support and enable social connection for older people living in care facilities. In this session, Jasmine Knox, Research Associate, Social Innovation Research Institute, Swinburne and Edwina Gow, Manager, Uniting, will share their experiences and discuss the implications for practice. Come and join us to listen, learn, and share your insights
