The paper examines changes in the area and volume of the Katun river basin glaciers, North and South Chu glaciers of the Altai Mountains since the beginning of the USSR glaciers inventarization to the present. For this purpose, we used USSR Glaciers Inventory data, space imagery – CORONA-1968, ALOS PRISM-2008, Landsat and ASTER 2000–2012. In total, glaciers have lost 172.4 km2 (27.4%) of its area.

Studies of the adhesive strength of glacial ice connection with bedrock has been studied using the analysis of the amplitude-frequency characteristics of acoustic emission (AE) in the frequency range from 15 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Identification of signal source on bed is based on physical modeling of adhesive ice fracture at the complex shear and patterns of elastic waves propagation in the ice using data on ice thickness of the ice and its acoustic properties. The experimental dependence of the ice and serpentinite substrate adhesive strength with temperature (from 0 °C to −30 °C) has been obtained at constraint axial shear. It is shown that the destruction of adhesive ice contact with substrate begins long before the maximum shear stress achieved, and AE signals in the coordinates amplitude-frequency-time have been obtained for the for static friction and sliding parts of deformation curves. Influence of shear to normal stresses ratio on the adhesive ice/substrate strength has been shown. Influence of the ratio of longitudinal and transverse shear stresses on the adhesive bond strength of ice to the substrate has been shown. The natural glacier spectra revealed periodic reduction of AE signals frequency in the middle range of frequencies. The similar effect of AE signals shifting along the frequency axis to the low frequency domain was obtained by testing of freshwater ice samples and related with expansion of the destruction scale. Practical application of the strain AE results for remote determination of the local glacial stability and for studies of glacier ice mechanics is discussed

We studied in the lab the interaction of river runoff from frozen soil, simulating the upper, active-layer, changing the thermal (warming) and mechanical (impact of rain) external influences. We determined the time of thawing of ground and infiltration in soil, sediment transport along the lines under the influence of slope flows, caused by both natural thawing permafrost and storm flows. A mathematical model for predicting the dynamics of river channels in the permafrost under the influence of external factors is suggested.

In this paper results of climate simulation in East-European Plain (EEP) by coupled climate models (which take part in project PMIP II (Paleoclimate Modeling Intercomparison Project)) are tested for different climatic periods (pre-industrial, Last Glacial Maximum (LGM)). The main parameters for comparison were: temperature, precipitations, evaporation and the Volga runoff. As a result, the model CNRM (Centre National de Recherches Meteorologie, France) was chosen as the best for this territory for pre-industrial climate. Its results were used to calculate runoff of the Volga river during the LGM and modern climate. «Climatic» component of the Volga runoff was calculated as the difference between precipitation and evaporation in the watershed. The «climatic» part of the Volga runoff 21 kyr decreased by 30% compared with the modern (according to model CNRM). The main reason for the low values of «climatic» runoff was a reduction of precipitation on the territory of Volga watershed. The decrease of evaporation could not compensate for the deficit of precipitation. However, according to paleoreconstructions and the results of PMIP II simulation, a significant change to the hydrological regime of the Volga River (21 kyr BP) could be due to the contribution of melt water (about 384 km³/year). This means that to «climatic» component of runoff (about 78 km³/year), one has to add volume of the melt water of the Scandinavian ice sheet, which within the territory of Volga watershed. The results were used to assess the level of the Caspian Sea during this period (changes in the Caspian sea level compared with modern was about 48 meters.

Data on spectral composition of shortwave radiation that is reflected from snow and penetrates deep into the snow cover obtained near the Barentsburg settlement (Svalbard) are discussed in the paper. Measurements were made by the use of the spectral radiometer TriOS Ramses within the wavelength range of 280–950 nm. The results will allow more proper taking account of the anthropogenic pollution effects on the radiative properties of snow cover under conditions of industrial activity related to the coal extraction and burning in Barentsburg.

The paper considers the role of vertical snowpack structure for snow avalanche formation and describes the idea of «structural instability». It aims at enhancing the knowledge about transition mechanisms between stable and unstable states of snowpack and snow avalanches release. Structural instability implies the presence of weak layer or interface in vertical snowpack profile. Type of snow failure and avalanche characteristics are completely defined by snowpack state and properties. Thus wide variety of genetic types of snow avalanches indicates the existence of structural instability of different types. The detailed analysis of scientific publications and field observations led to the creation of a new classification of weak layers. The layers are classified basing on their cohesiveness, the causes of initial disturbance and internal and external processes which form a weak layer. The classification is a necessary part of global method which allows assessing snowpack stability using modern physical models of snow cover evolution.

The temperature and snow accumulation rate anomaly over the past 350 years have been reconstructed based on isotopic composition of shallow ice cores and snow pits samples as well as glaciological observations in pits and at stake farms located in Indian Ocean sector of East Antarctica. The relationship of temporal variability of isotopic composition of precipitation and surface air temperature in ensemble with sea surface temperature has been analyzed. The fingerprints of Little Ice Age and climatic shift 1970s have been defined. We have also figured out the influence of non-climatic drivers on the formation of signal in stable water isotopic series.

The article is dedicated to perennial snow patches of Mongun-Taiga mountain massif (south-western Tuva), their morphology, present state and dynamics over the last 45 years. We created a scheme of snow patch classification with regard to genesis of relief and position on the slopes. Dynamics of snow patches is analyzed for periods between several time points – 1966 (on basis of aerial photos), 2000, 2007–2008 and 2011 (on basis of field measurements and observations). From 1966 to 2008 the number of snow patches decreased by 4 times, the total area – by 15 times, the altitudinal zone of snow patches moved 250–300 m up. In 2008–2011 the altitudinal zone of snow patches partly recovered, its lower limit moved 250 m down, periglacial snow patches recovered, a new type – snow patches of buried ice and debris-covered glaciers appeared. It could be the first face of the process of small glaciers recovery in the massif. Using the changes of the altitudinal position of snow patches in comparison with data of the closest meteorological station we estimated the amount of annual precipitation, critical for the existence of local snow patches.

According to the meteorological station Barentsburg the average positive temperature of air on West Spitsbergen for the period of 1985–2011 years grows by 0,02 °C/year, and for the period of 2002–2011 it is reduced on 0,03 °C/year. The average negative temperature of air for these periods grows with intensity 0.09 °C/year and 0.20 °C/year, accordingly. Tendency of the growth of the snow cover maximal thickness is kept. During 2007–2009 the maximal thickness of snow cover reached 2 m. As a result of it deterioration of soil conditions is freezing. The temperature of soil on the depth of 1 mreaches –6 °С for maximal snow thickness of 0.5 mand it reaches –1 °С for snow thickness of 2 m. During the summer period the growth of soil temperature is interfered by the moss cover. The depth of thawed soil is reduced more than 80% for a moss thickness 10 cm. In winter, the moss is not an essential obstacle for soil freezing and cooling. The moss heat conductivity coefficient in winter corresponds to the snow heat conductivity coefficient for density 400 kg/m3. Results of mathematical modelling and calculations are showed that at real meteorological parameters and absence of the moss cover talik can formed

Between the close-off depth and the bubble-to-hydrate transition zone in polar ice sheets, the geometrical properties of air bubbles, such as number concentration and size of bubbles, are mainly controlled by firn temperature and ice accumulation rate prevailing during the snow to ice transformation [3], and by the bubble compression in the course of bubbly ice densification [13]. This implies that the data on the bubble properties can be used for reconstruction of the past climate change. On the basis of our earlier studies of bubbly ice densification and the new measurements of air bubbles in the Antarctic ice cores, we have developed a theory of bubble evolution in polar ice and propose an inverse procedure for bubble size conversion to specified conditions at the close-off depth. Both outcomes of the research contribute to elaboration of the new paleoclimatological tool based on the bubble properties
