Introduction: Radicchio (Cichorium intybus L.) is a leaf chicory and is grown as a leaf vegetable which usually has white-veined red or purple leaves and it belongs to the Asteraceae family. In several countries is consumed mainly as salad, but no studies on their elemental composition  has been done, principally in Brazil. Objective: The aim of present work was to measure the macroelements (Na, K, Ca, Mg and P) and microelements (Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Zn, Al, Cd, Ni, Co and Si) in the leaf Chicory used as human nourishment in the Campo Grande, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Method: Chemical digests of samples were prepared using HNO3 and H2O2 and then placed in the microwave digestion system. After digestion, the concentrations of the elements in Leaf Chicory were determined by the technique of Inductively Coupled Plasma - Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP–OES, Thermo Scientific - iCAP 6000 Series). Results obtained of the concentrations of leaf chicory were compared with the dietary reference intakes. Results: Detected concentration of macroelements in leaf Chicory decreases in the order: K > P > Ca > Mg > Na. As well as the concentration of microelements decreases in the order: Fe > Al > Si > Mn > Zn > Cu > Cr > Ni > Cd > Mo > Co. Leaf Chicory is excellent source of K, Ca, Mg, P, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo and Zn for children and adults. On the other hand, leaf chicory is not considered a source of sodium for children and adults. Concentration of K, Cr, Fe, and Al are above the limit recommended limit by FAO/WHO (1984) and others countries. Conclusions: Leaf Chicory has macro and microelements in ample amount; it can be used as an important part of people's diets. Since it not exceed allowable limits set by WHO and FAO, RDA/AI and UL. Competent organs have not evaluated concentrations of elements as Al, Cd, Ni, Co and Si in order to establish a tolerable upper intake level or RDA/AI for human. The lack of studies of adverse effects following excess intake of a nutrient does not mean that adverse effects do not occur. Objetive: The study is an experience report, with the objective of reporting differences in the humanization present in nursing care between a Brazilian city and two cities of the United States of America, highlighting the potentialities and fragility of care provided in both cities frequented by students of Patos Integrated College - FIP. Method: The study was based on the exchange linked to the Bounce project, funded by the US government, which took place between May 21 and June 20, 2015, and was attended by 8 (eight) FIP scholars from Paraíba, Brazil. Through the study it was possible to perform a comparative analysis between the Brazilian hospital reality, seen in the FIP curriculum internship field, through the Deputy Janduhy Carneiro Regional Hospital, located in the municipality of Patos - Paraíba, Brazil, and the North American, evidenced by the visit to the hospitals of Hudson and New Paltz. Results: It was observed that the difference in care is in the humanization present in the Brazilian nursing care process. It is noteworthy the great work done by these professionals, who are not only concerned with technical-scientific efficiency, but with humanized assistance, based on ethical, moral, affection and for mutual respect precepts. Comparing the assistance provided in the two realities, we observed in our country a predominantly humanistic, rather than mechanical, assistance. Therefore, it is concluded that it is fundamental to seek tools that improve our Health System, consequently, providing benefits both for professionals, as well as for the users assisted. Conclusion: In this way, it can be said that humanization does not depend only on technological resources to be shared. Keywords: Nursing care. Humanization. Hospital

    No full text
Transfusion of blood components is considered safer, but it took years to reach this level. One of the most effective ways to make blood transfusion a safer practice is hemovigilance, which provides important data, including the history of feared transfusion reactions. In recent years in Brazil, there has been an improvement in the reporting of transfusion reactions, however due to the great diversity of hematology services, there are still transfusion reactions. The aims of this study were described the main types of transfusion reactions, as well as to evaluate the underreporting importance of transfusion occurrences of hemotherapy services in Brazil

    No full text
Introduction: In recent years, some studies have shown an increase in cardiovascular risk due to the use of calcium supplements in excess of the recommended doses. One hypothesis is that some calcium supplements lead to a more pronounced elevation of serum calcium concentrations. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the serum calcium responses after ingestion of calcium carbonate, with and without the prior use of omeprazole, and after ingestion of soluble fiber enriched milk (SFM). Method: Five postmenopausal women were evaluated in three phases. For each phase, the serum calcium responses were determined at 0h (baseline), 1h, 2h, 3h and 4h. After ingestion of 1200mg of calcium, both for the patients who received the calcium carbonate and for those who received SFM. The rise in serum calcium observed after ingestion of calcium carbonate with a calcium peak of 0.56 mg/dl (p=0.032), and it was higher when compared to SFM 0.26 mg/dl (p=0.284). There was no significant elevation of serum calcium after ingestion of SFM. Results: The calcium responses were negative after the administration of omeprazole in comparison with the use of calcium carbonate and SFM, reaching 7.06mg/dl vs 9.04mg/dl vs 9.12mg/dl at 0h, 5.30mg/dl vs 9. 32mg/dl vs 9.00mg/dl at 1hr, 5.52mg/dl vs 9.48mg/dl vs 9.32mg/dl at 2hr, 5.18mg/dl vs 9.48mg/dl vs 9.34mg/dl at, respectively. In conclusion, our data show that the same amount of SFM induced a lower serum calcium response when compared to calcium carbonate. Conclusion: The use of omeprazole significantly reduced the intestinal absorption of calcium carbonate

Background: Association of extragonadal germ cell tumors EGCT with haematological malignancies is rare with a very limited prognosis. Methods and findings: We report a case of a man, 21 years old, with progressive dyspnea, chest pain, night sweats, generalized edema, hemoptysis, pancytopenia and increased serum levels of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), beta-fraction of the hormone chorionic gonodotrophin (beta-HCG) and lactic dehydrogenase. Chest computed tomography described a mediastinum mass measuring 11.3 x 7.3 cm whose biopsy revealed malignant germ cell neoplasia expressing positivity for cytokeratin, CD30 and AFP, indicating an embryonal carcinoma with teratoma. Bone marrow biopsy revealed interstitial infiltration by malignant neoplastic cells positive for CD68, CD163 and lysozyme, allowing the diagnosis of histiocytic sarcoma. The patient had a poor evolution, with death, sixteen days after admission. Conclusion: Histiocytic proliferations are very rare and rapidly fatal. Etiopathogenic theories for the simultaneity of these malignancies have been described based on processes of transformation from a same cellular precursor
