The therapeutic approach of the May-Thurner Syndrome without Deep Venous Thrombosis: a systematic review
May-Thurner Syndrome is a clinical condition which causes a variety of vascular symptoms, resulting from pelvic and lower extremity venous flow obstruction caused by the compression of the iliac vein by overlying iliac artery. Treatment paradigms have changed as experience with endovascular modalities has evolved, making traditional surgical treatment strategies essentially obsolete and a endovascular treatment with angioplasty and stenting along selective thrombolysis has become the standard for symptomatic the syndrome. The objective of this present study is to show the therapeutic approach in treatment when there’s no presence of Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT) symptoms. To accomplish this purpose, a systematic review of articles about May-Thurner Syndrome and its management therapies, published from January 1, 2005 to September 20, 2015, on PubMED and SCOPUS databases, was carried out. Search terms were “may-thurner syndrome” (medical subject headings [MeSH term]), “iliocaval compression syndrome” (MeSH), “cockett syndrome” (MeSH), “peripheral vascular diseases” (MeSH), and “treatment” (keyword). Of the 89 retrieved studies, 14 met the elegibility criteria. Retrieved studies covered that without correction of this syndrome, patients are at continued risk for recurrent deep vein thrombosis and post-thrombotic syndrome. Considering the therapy, systemic anticoagulation is the first component, and endovascular treatment appears to be superior to conventional surgical treatment. It should be the first line of therapy. Furthermore, there has been multiple advences in the recent years for chronic arterial occlusions using techniques such as blunt micro dissection, radiofrequency energy and laser. In the absence of deep venous trombosis, conservative treatments are preferred. To conclude, based on the review of the literature, a combination of conservative and endovascular therapy usually provides the best treatment in most cases. Thus, further researches must be done to advance in the matter of therapeutic of the non-DVT form of May-Thurner Syndrome.

Trends In Geriodontics Publication: A Specialty Emerging In Brazil
The population of Brazil and the world is aging. The great challenge is to grow old by maintaining quality of life with health, including oral health. The objective of this study was to identify the recurrent themes in Geriodontics, through a bibliometric survey, using the database of Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), conducted in 2016. Geriodontics, as a relatively new specialty, presents major challenges related to the elderly population (oral health, prostheses, periodontics, for example). In view of a historical context of aging and increased elderly population, there is a concern to deepen the studies in relation to the subject. Knowing the problems allows offering a better service with quality and adequate training of the professional
Complete Blood Count Interpretation: A Survey Of Health Professional In Brazil
Background: Complete blood count is one of the most ordered tests in clinical and surgical practice. However, it is important to know how to properly interpret it. The aim of this study was to measure the level of knowledge that health professionals have concerning the proper interpretation of the CBC test.
Methods and Findings: The article reports and analyzes the responses of questionnaires on the interpretation of CBC results applied in a sample of one hundred health professionals. A semi-structured tool was developed and composed of topics regarding sociodemographic data, a specific knowledge test on CBC, and a self-evaluation on the interpretation and the importance of the test. All participants scored less than 90% on the questionnaire, a result that was established as unsatisfactory regarding CBC interpretation. Only physicians and biomedical scientists showed suitable knowledge on the interpretation of hematological terms.
Conclusion: Despite the fact CBC is one of the main tests in clinical routine, our results showed deficits in knowledge on the theme by health professionals. Perhaps these results may help to reinforce the importance of multidisciplinarity and also highlight the deficiencies of training in the different professions studied
Associations Between Lifestyle Factors And Parkinson’s Disease In An Urban Sri Lankan Clinic Study
Background- Information on lifestyle factors (eg. coffee /tea drinking, smoking) and Parkinson’s Disease(PD) in South Asia is limited. The objective of this study was to determine associations between lifestyle factors and PD in a clinic-based study in Sri Lanka.
Methods–Demographic and lifestyle factor data was collected from an unselected cohort of PD patients and age and gender-matched controls attending clinics in Greater Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Findings–Of 229 patients with parkinsonism, 144 had Idiopathic PD. Controls numbered 102. Coffee drinkers and smokers were significantly less likely to have PD (coffee, p<0.001; OR=0.264; smoking, p=0.043; OR=0.394). Coffee drinkers were older at PD onset(p<0.001). Similar trends seen with tea drinking were not statistically significant.
Conclusions -This is the first formal study of PD and these lifestyle factors in South Asia. It demonstrates an association between coffee drinking, smoking and a decreased prevalence of PD, and coffee drinking and later age of PD onset. This is in line with other studies done worldwide, suggesting biological associations with global relevance
Multidimensional Assessment Of Institutionalized Elderly: The Reality Of A Brazilian Institution
Background: The population aging in Brazil is characterized by the accumulation of progressive disabilities in their functional activities and daily life. To consider the elderlies in his/her multiple dimensions turns out to be a critical issue to improve their assistance to an institutionalized level, improving their health and quality of life. To perform a mini-overall evaluation of institutionalized elderly person to trace their profile in relation to the socio-demographic, functional capacity, nutritional status and cognition.
Methods: descriptive, cross-sectional study of quantitative approach conducted in facilities for the aged people in Natal, RN.
Results: 63.3% of the elderly were female, with ages varying from 61 to 103 years. 60.0% were single; 56.7% were literate. 66.7% had no children and 55% lived with their families before the institutionalization. As for the institutionalization time, 63.3% resided in the institution for four years. As what concerns the aspects of health, 73.3 of the elderly presented hearing difficulties, 90% make use of medicines predominantly to diabetes and hypertension. There is clear evidence that the institutionalization has been harmful to the elderly as with regards basic activities of daily living, nutritional status and cognitive aspects.
Conclusion: the progressive disability in functional activities of daily life interferes directly in the quality of life, increasing dependency and minimizing the autonomy of these individuals. It is necessary to effective implementation of public policies directed to the institutionalized elderly from the perspective of effective actions for improved attention and assistance.
