Background: Impairment of potassium levels is common in clinical practice, mainly encountered among hospitalized patients with a wide spectrum of sickness. Hypokalemia is a potentially dangerous irregularity that may have pernicious actuates. Objective: This study was directed to measure the potassium levels in Sudanese infected with jaundice. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study recruited in the laboratory center of Port Sudan teaching hospital during the period from the 14th July 2008 to the 5th April 2009. 90 Icteric patients (30 hemolytic Icterus patients, 30 hepatic Icterus patients and 30 obstructive Icterus patients) along with 30 apparently healthy controls were enrolled. Serum potassium and bilirubin levels were evaluated. Results: Hypokalemia noted in 45 (50%) of the Icterus patients. Hypokalemia was significantly associated with hepatic and obstructive jaundice (P < 0.000). Hypokalemia was strongly positively correlated with conjugated bilirubin concentration (P < 0.000/r = -0.736) and negatively correlated with unconjugated bilirubin concentration (P < 0.078/r = -0.187). Conclusion: Hypokalemia is predominant in patients with jaundice and may worsen the morbidity of the illness. Keywords: Serum potassium; Hypokalemia; Jaundice; Sudan

Panoramic Radiographic Study on Location of Mental Foramen in Patients of Orthodontic Treatment

    Get PDF
Background: Information on the location of the mental foramen is the need for various purposes in dental treatment. Variations in its position can be a cause of complications during local anesthesia or surgical procedures. The usual position of the mental foramen in the Vijayapur population has not been previously reported. Aims: The purpose of this study was to determine the most common location of the mental foramen in Vijayapur population. Materials and Methods: 291 panoramic radiographs were evaluated with regard to only the position of mental foramen foramina in male and female subjects. Results: We found that the position of mental foramen was most common is in line with second premolar (54.2%) and second common in between the first and second premolar (37.5%). Conclusions: Based on this study it appears that the most common position of mental foramen is either between the two premolars or in line with the second premolar. This is in concordance with previous studies. Keywords: Mandible; mental foramen; mental nerve; panoramic; radiography

A cross sectional study was carried out to see the magnitude of depression as public health problem among purposively selected 291 stroke patients attending for physiotherapy at outpatient department of Physical Medicine Department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Center for the Rehabilitation of the Paralyzed, Dhaka. Data were collected through face to face interview using a pretested questionnaire and document review. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Hamilton Depression Rating scale at cut-off value 10 for mild, 14 for moderate and 18 for severe depression. The proportion of depression among the study population was 65% which included 30% with severe depression and rest 17% mild, 18% moderate depression and 35% had no depression. People with ischaemic stroke were more depressed (75.9%) than other types of stroke (p<0.00l). With the duration of stroke both the proportion and level of depression had been increased (p<0.00l. Most of the respondents from low income group were suffering from some level of depression (p<0.05). Both diabetes mellitus (p<0.00l) and hypertension (p<0.005) had significant role in depressive state. This study identified depression among stroke patients as a significant public health problem. Therefore, while planning therapeutic approaches for stroke patients, depression always should be taken into consideration for effective management and improvement of the compliance

Accessory Belly of the Plantaris Muscle and its Clinical Relevance

    Get PDF
The plantaris muscle is accessory flexor group muscle of the lower leg. The muscle originates from the lower part of the lateral supracondylar line of the femur and the oblique popliteal ligament, inserted medial to calcaneal tuberosity.  During the routine dissection for the undergraduate medical students we encountered accessory plantaris muscle originating medial side of the femoral condyle and capsular ligament. Both the normal lateral and accessory medial tendons fused to form long slender tendon and inserted medial to calcaneal tuberosity. Knowledge of variable origin, course and the insertion of the plantaris muscle is important for surgeons performing various reconstructive surgeries

Interpretations of Cone Beam Computed Tomography

    Get PDF
Dental volumetric tomography is the concept in which tissues of maxillofacial region are depicted using a cone beam shaped x-radiation to provide rapid accurate details. The salient advantages of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) are shorter exposure time, reduced image distortion due to patient movements, decreased patient dose and multiplanar screening. CBCT aids the clinicians to localize the anatomic structures as a whole which can be visualized in three planes as in axial, coronal and sagittal sections. As a prerequisite for interpretation of every imaging mode, it is essential for the clinician to know the normal from the abnormal. This review highlights the essence to comprehend CBCT and interpret it in the accurate manner with minimal complications

The work is based on the analysis of the treatment results of 35 patients with burn trauma (10 women and 25 men) aged 15 to 55 years who were treated in the burn department of Republican Scientific Centre of Urgent Medical Aid (RSCUMA) between 2017 and 2018. In this study, we report on the use of the hemostatic preparation Geprocel with an autodermoplasty on a wound after necroectomy with subsequent autodermoplasty in all cases contributed to the complete healing of donor sites for 7 days, and the complete engraftment of the skin autotransplant with full recovery of the defect by 12 days after surgery. This preliminary data suggests the potential role of Geprocel in the clinical management of burn treatment. The work is based on the analysis of the treatment results of 35 patients with burn trauma (10 women and 25 men) aged 15 to 55 years who were treated in the burn department of Republican Scientific Centre of Urgent Medical Aid (RSCUMA) between 2017 and 2018.
