    Self-Regulation in Chemical and Bio-Engineering Materials for Intelligent Systems

    Herein, the authors review the self-regulation system secured by well-designed hybrid materials, composites, and complex system. As a broad concept, the self-regulated material/system has been defined in a wide research field and proven to be of great interest for use in a biomedical system, mechanical system, physical system, as the fact of something such as an organisation regulating itself without intervention from external perturbation. Here, they focus on the most recent discoveries of self-regulation phenomenon and progress in utilising the self-regulation design. This paper concludes by examining various practical applications of the remarkable materials and systems including manipulation of the oil/water interface, cell out-layer structure, radical activity, electron energy level, and mechanical structure of nanomaterials. From material science to bioengineering, self-regulation proves to be not only viable, but increasingly useful in many applications. As part of intelligent engineering, self-regulatory materials are expected to be more used as integrated intelligent components

    Expression, Regulation and Function of miR-126 in the Mouse Choroid Vasculature.

    MicroRNA miR-126 has been shown to be required for proper angiogenesis in several models. However, its expression, regulation and function in the mouse choroid remain unclear. Our previous data has shown that miR-126 expression is enriched in the endothelial cells (ECs) of the mouse choroid. Here we report that a 5.5 kb Egfl7/miR-126 promoter drives the expression of miR-126 in the choroid ECs during choroidal vascular development. The expression of miR-126 in the ECs is regulated by flow stress likely through Krüppel-like transcriptional factors. miR-126−/− mice show mildly delayed choroidal vascular development, but adult knockout mice develop periphery choroidal vascular lesions. This study suggests that miR-126 is largely dispensable for mouse choroidal development but required for maintaining choroidal vasculature integrity

    Downregulation of Bit1 Expression Promotes Growth, Anoikis Resistance, and Transformation of Immortalized Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells via Erk Activation-Dependent Suppression of E-cadherin.

    The mitochondrial Bit1 protein exerts tumor-suppressive function in NSCLC through induction of anoikis and inhibition of EMT. Having this dual tumor suppressive effect, its downregulation in the established human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cell line resulted in potentiation of tumorigenicity and metastasis in vivo. However, the exact role of Bit1 in regulating malignant growth and transformation of human lung epithelial cells, which are origin of most forms of human lung cancers, has not been examined. To this end, we have downregulated the endogenous Bit1 expression in the immortalized non-tumorigenic human bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B cells. Knockdown of Bit1 enhanced the growth and anoikis insensitivity of BEAS-2B cells. In line with their acquired anoikis resistance, the Bit1 knockdown BEAS-2B cells exhibited enhanced anchorage-independent growth in vitro but failed to form tumors in vivo. The loss of Bit1-induced transformed phenotypes was in part attributable to the repression of E-cadherin expression since forced exogenous E-cadherin expression attenuated the malignant phenotypes of the Bit1 knockdown cells. Importantly, we show that the loss of Bit1 expression in BEAS-2B cells resulted in increased Erk activation, which functions upstream to promote TLE1-mediated transcriptional repression of E-cadherin. These collective findings indicate that loss of Bit1 expression contributes to the acquisition of malignant phenotype of human lung epithelial cells via Erk activation-induced suppression of E-cadherin expression

    Concise N-doped Carbon Nanosheets/Vanadium Nitride Nanoparticles Materials via Intercalative Polymerization for Supercapacitors

    N-doped carbon nanosheets/vanadium nitride nanoparticles (N-CNS/VNNPs) are synthesized via a novel method combining surface-initiated in-situ intercalative polymerization and thermal-treatment process in NH3/N2 atmosphere. The pH value of the synthesis system plays a critical role in constructing the structure and enhancing electrochemical performance for N-CNS/VNNPs, which are characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, and XPS, and measured by electrochemical station, respectively. The results show that N-CNS/VNNPs materials consist of 2D N-doped carbon nanosheets and 0D VN nanoparticles. With the pH value decreasing from 2 to 0, the sizes of both carbon nanosheets and VN nanoparticles decreased to smaller in nanoscale. The maximum specific capacitance of 280 F g-1 at the current density of 1 A g-1 for N-CNS/VNNPs is achieved in three-electrode configuration. The asymmetric energy device of Ni(OH)2||N-CNS/VNNPs offers a specific capacitance of 89.6 F g-1 and retention of 60% at 2.7 A g-1 after 5000 cycles. The maximum energy density of Ni(OH)2 ||N-CNS/VNNPs asymmetric energy device is as high as 29.5 Wh kg-1

    The School Counselor Experience: Understanding variables that Create the Alignment Between the Current School Counselor Role and the Activities outlined by American School Counselor Association

    This study investigated the alignment between the school counselor\u27s role as actualized in schools and as outlined by the American School Counselor Association. The study examined preservice school counselor training, and current school counselor practices to identify barriers that challenge the counselor\u27s ability to meet the needs of the whole child. The study answered four questions: 1) If perceived discrepancies exist between actual school counselor roles and ASCA crafted activities, what are the discrepancies? 2) How do the discrepancies between actual school counselor roles and ASCA job activities happen? 3) How do school counselor duties and time spent align with their current practice in supporting student success? (i.e. are school counselors performing duties outside of their role not related to student success) and 4) How effectively did preservice training prepare school counselors for their current role as a school counselor? The result of this study expanded a very small body of literature discussing the difference of the ASCA school counselor role and actual current counselor practices
