Phytochemicals: Current Strategies for Treating Breast Cancer (review)
Females with early-stage metastatic, estrogen-dependent breast cancer are generally treated with surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, or with more targeted approaches such as aromatase inhibitors (anastrozole or letrozole) or anti-estrogens (tamoxifen). Despite widespread successful usage of these agents for the treatment of breast cancer, resistance, tumor relapse and metastasis remain the principal causes of mortality for patients with breast cancer. While numerous groups have made major contributions toward an improved understanding of resistance mechanisms, the currently insufficient grasp of the most critical pathways involved in resistance is evident in the inability to adequately treat and drastically improve patient outcomes in females with hormone-refractory breast cancer, including triple negative breast cancer. Therefore, further investigation of novel therapeutic approaches is paramount to reveal previously unconsidered agents that could be utilized to treat metastatic disease. Numerous naturally occurring phytochemicals have recently gained interest as potential therapeutic breast cancer agents appear to directly affect estrogen-dependent and estrogen-independent breast cancer cell proliferation, potentially via affecting breast cancer stem cell populations. While numerous natural compounds have exhibited promise, they are limited by their bioavailability. Therefore, to effectively treat future hormone-refractory breast tumors, it is critical to adequately refine and formulate these agents for effective therapeutic use and delivery. Herein, the literature on the current state of phytochemicals is reviewed, including their limitations and potential as targeted therapies for breast cancer
Recent Advances in the Discovery and Development of Factor XI/XIa Inhibitors.
Factor XIa (FXIa) is a serine protease homodimer that belongs to the intrinsic coagulation pathway. FXIa primarily catalyzes factor IX activation to factor IXa, which subsequently activates factor X to factor Xa in the common coagulation pathway. Growing evidence suggests that FXIa plays an important role in thrombosis with a relatively limited contribution to hemostasis. Therefore, inhibitors targeting factor XI (FXI)/FXIa system have emerged as a paradigm-shifting strategy so as to develop a new generation of anticoagulants to effectively prevent and/or treat thromboembolic diseases without the life-threatening risk of internal bleeding. Several inhibitors of FXI/FXIa proteins have been discovered or designed over the last decade including polypeptides, active site peptidomimetic inhibitors, allosteric inhibitors, antibodies, and aptamers. Antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs), which ultimately reduce the hepatic biosynthesis of FXI, have also been introduced. A phase II study, which included patients undergoing elective primary unilateral total knee arthroplasty, revealed that a specific FXI ASO effectively protects patients against venous thrombosis with a relatively limited risk of bleeding. Initial findings have also demonstrated the potential of FXI/FXIa inhibitors in sepsis, listeriosis, and arterial hypertension. This review highlights various chemical, biochemical, and pharmacological aspects of FXI/FXIa inhibitors with the goal of advancing their development toward clinical use

Xavier University of Louisiana’s Faculty Development for Integrative Pedagogy and Assessment Practices (Core Curriculum Enhancement Initiative)
As a University committed to student success and thus to effective pedagogy, we are eager to adopt approaches to teaching that call upon students to explore the breadth of knowledge and methods of understanding. We also honor the science of pedagogy and thus are methodical in approaching teaching innovation. This grant proposal from Xavier University’s College of Arts and Sciences seeks support for faculty development that will accelerate the change that has already begun, thanks to Mellon\u27s investment in Xavier through the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Faculty Development (CAT+FD). The goal is to make the previous investments more thorough by preparing a significant percentage of our faculty with the knowledge and understanding to create and assess courses that modernize a significant portion of the undergraduate academic experience: the core curriculum. The core curriculum is the College’s general education program and is currently based on a distribution model of course offerings

Crystal Structures of the Hexafluoridophosphate Salts of the Isomeric 2-, 3-and 4-Cyano-1-Methylpyridinium Cations and Determination of Solid-State Interaction Energies
The synthesis and crystal structures of the isomeric molecular salts 2-, 3-and 4-cyano-1-methylpyridinium hexafluoridophosphate, C7 H7 N2+ ·PF 6-, are reported. In 2-cyano-1-methylpyridinium hexafluoridophosphate, C-H..F hydrogen bonds form chains extending along the c-axis direction, which are associated through C-H..F hydrogen bonds and P-F..π(ring) interactions into stepped layers. For 3-cyano-1-methylpyridinium hexafluoridophosphate, corrugated sheets parallel to [001] are generated by C-H..F hydrogen bonds and P-F..π(ring) interactions. The sheets are weakly associated by a weak interaction of the cyano group with the six-membered ring of the cation. In 4-cyano-1-methylpyridinium hexafluoridophosphate, C-H..F hydrogen bonds form a more open three-dimensional network in which stacks of cations and of anions are aligned with the b-axis direction. Dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D) calculations were carried out in order to elucidate some of the energetic aspects of the solid-state structures. The results indicate that the distribution of charge within a molecular ionic cation can play a large role in determining the strength of a cation-anion interaction within a crystal structure. Crystals of 2-cyano-1-methylpyridinium hexafluoridophosphate are twinned by a 180° rotation about the c∗ axis. The anion in 3-cyano-1-methylpyridinium hexafluoridophosphate is rotationally disordered by 38.2 (1)° in an 0.848 (3):0.152 (3) ratio

Early-Childhood Computer-based Testing: Effects of a Digital Literacy Intervention on Student Confidence and Performance
Early-childhood digital students grow up in a fast-evolving age of technology requiring them to use and create with technologies and demonstrate core content knowledge. Although third grade students are mandated to master a new language of standardized testing, a large percentage must also learn a language of technology to complete new computer-based tests to measure content mastery. Krashen (1982) defines high affective filter as negative emotional/motivational factors interfering with understanding and cognition. This high affective filter reduces confidence and negatively impacts measuring content mastery on new computerbased tests. Two third grade classrooms at a high-poverty metropolitan school participated in a quasi-experimental study to measure the effects of a digital literacy intervention on computerbased testing confidence and student performance in social studies and mathematics. The intervention group participated in a digital literacy intervention developing keyboarding and coding skills. The control group participated in a mock digital intervention. Both participant groups received computer-based pretests and posttests in social studies and mathematics, and both groups completed Technology-Use Baseline and computer-based testing (CBT) confidence surveys after each pretest and posttest. A comparison of means was used to analyze change between pretest and posttest. Regression analysis and ANOVA were used to determine any v significant relationships between CBT-Confidence, student performance and digital literacy intervention variables. The study results found a significant relationship with a change in student performance and computer-based testing confidence in social studies but not mathematics. There was also a direct, positive significant relationship with the coding intervention and change in computerbased testing confidence in social studies but not mathematics. The researcher suggests that mode of technology integration within the two classrooms impacted the research study. The research study suggests that learner-centered technology integration within the social studies classroom positively impacted the research study when comparing the teacher-centered technology integration within the mathematics classroom. Research study suggests that school leaders consider providing teacher professional development opportunities for learner-centered technology integration (Chow et al., 2012, Considine et al., 2009). Future research could include larger sample population, using the same teacher to teach both subjects, and implementing longitudinal study to track student performance on standardized testing
