Improving evidence on women’s groups: A proposed typology and common reporting indicators
No full textWomen’s groups are a widely implemented and researched development intervention, particularly in South Asia and Africa. Groups encompass many models and aim to address a range of objectives. However, there is no consistent approach to describing their varied implementation models, which hinders the accurate interpretation of evidence and construct validity. Drawing from three recent evidence reviews and research experience with groups, we propose a typology and common reporting indicators to describe women’s groups. As large-scale investments in women’s groups grow, these tools can support the interpretation and transferability of evidence across models and settings
Climate change vulnerability, and health of women and children: Evidence from India using district level data
No full textObjective: To understand how climate change vulnerability is associated with women and children\u27s health (WCH) at the district level in India. Methods: The district-specific climate change vulnerability index was mapped to the district level NFHS-5 data (N = 674). Fractional regression and spatial analyses were performed to examine the strength of association and the presence of geographic clustering. Results: Bivariate analysis revealed that the levels of WCH indicators were lower in districts with a high vulnerability index than in those with a low vulnerability index. Multivariable analyses suggested that with a 1% increase in the vulnerability index, the proportion of modern contraceptive use was reduced by 0.22, four or more prenatal care visits by 0.14, postnatal care by 0.11, and full immunization by 0.12; whereas wasting and underweight proportions increased by 0.07 and 0.10, respectively. The spatial analysis found that in about 70–118 districts, mostly in eastern India, where climate vulnerability was high the WCH outcomes were also poor. Conclusion: There is a macro-level association between climate change vulnerability and WCH, as districts that had high levels of climate change vulnerability also performed poorly in WCH. There is a need for an integrated approach that considers geography-specific climate change threats to develop health programs

Ethical recruitment and employment in the construction industry in India: Perspectives and experiences of workers and micro-contractors
Get PDFIn India, the construction industry is the second-largest employer, with 51 million workers currently employed. Contracting and subcontracting has contributed to the rise of intermediary labor contractors, who provide migrants with information about labor markets and bring them to construction sites for work. Engagement in physically demanding low-skill jobs, low wages, harsh working conditions, and often deplorable living arrangements characterize the lives of many migrant construction workers. The Population Council, in partnership with the Global Fund to End Modern Slavery and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, undertook a qualitative study to explore the nature of the labor supply chain in the construction industry and the relationship between workers, micro-contractors, other contractors, and construction firms/companies. The study also explored vulnerabilities faced by migrant construction workers, perceptions of workers and micro-contractors about ethical recruitment and employment practices, and challenges faced by micro-contractors in following these ethical recruitment and employment practices. Twenty-five micro-contractors and 236 workers were interviewed from June to August 2022 in construction sites in Bengaluru and Delhi in India

Get PDFDuring pregnancy, malaria has a devastating impact on health outcomes for mothers and infants. Uptake of Sulfadoxine-Pyrimethamine (SP) for intermittent preventive treatment of malaria during pregnancy (IPTp) is a safe and clinically proven medical intervention for the prevention of malaria in pregnancy (MiP). Despite Kenya’s adoption of this intervention in its national policies and guidelines, uptake of IPTp for MiP has been persistently low. To realize effective coverage of IPTp, the Population Council, Kenya in collaboration with Kisumu Medical and Education Trust (KMET) and County Governments, is implementing the Revive IPTp project in Kisumu and Migori counties. The project seeks to increase community engagement in IPTp and promote self-care by pregnant women. This study’s main objective is to generate baseline evidence to inform the design, monitoring, and evaluation of interventions to improve IPTp-SP uptake in two malaria endemic counties in Kenya

A qualitative study of how stigma influences HIV services for transgender men and women in Nigeria
No full textIntroduction: Transgender men and women in Nigeria experience many barriers in accessing HIV prevention and treatment services, particularly given the environment of transphobia (including harassment, violence and discrimination) and punitive laws in the country. HIV epidemic control in Nigeria requires improving access to and quality of HIV services for key populations at high risk, including transgender men and women. We assessed how stigma influences HIV services for transgender people in Lagos, Nigeria. Methods: In-depth interviews (IDIs) and focus group discussions were conducted with transgender men (n = 13) and transgender women (n = 25); IDIs were conducted with community service organization (CSO) staff (n = 8) and healthcare providers from CSO clinics and public health facilities (n = 10) working with the transgender population in March 2021 in Lagos. Content analysis was used to identify how stigma influences transgender people\u27s experiences with HIV services. Results and discussion: Three main findings emerged. First, gender identity disclosure is challenging due to anticipated stigma experienced by transgender persons and fear of legal repercussions. Fear of being turned in to authorities was a major barrier to disclose to providers in facilities not affiliated with a transgender-inclusive clinic. Providers also reported difficulty in eliciting information about the client\u27s gender identity. Second, respondents reported lack of sensitivity among providers about gender identity and conflation of transgender men with lesbian women and transgender women with being gay or men who have sex with men, the latter being more of a common occurrence. Transgender participants also reported feeling disrespected when providers were not sensitive to their pronoun of preference. Third, HIV services that are not transgender-inclusive and gender-affirming can reinforce stigma. Both transgender men and women spoke about experiencing stigma and being refused HIV services, especially in mainstream public health facilities, as opposed to transgender-inclusive CSO clinics. Conclusions: This study highlights how stigma impedes access to appropriate HIV services for transgender men and women, which can have a negative impact along the HIV care continuum. There is a need for transgender-inclusive HIV services and competency trainings for healthcare providers so that transgender clients can receive appropriate and gender-affirming HIV services
