Bacillus velezensis EU07 suppresses Fusarium graminearum via transcriptomic reprogramming
Fusarium graminearum , the causal agent of Fusarium head blight, is a devastating pathogen of cereals worldwide. Biological control using Bacillus species has emerged as a sustainable strategy to suppress this pathogen, but the molecular basis of antagonism remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the interaction between Bacillus velezensis EU07 and F. graminearum strain K1-4 through morphological assays and RNA-seq profiling. Microscopy revealed severe hyphal distortions including swelling and branching abnormalities, following exposure to EU07 cell pellets. Transcriptomic analysis after 6 h of treatment identified 1,264 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), with 732 downregulated and 532 upregulated. Genes encoding secondary metabolite biosynthesis enzymes, including trichothecene (TRI) cluster genes, cytochrome P450s, and transporters, were strongly repressed. Key metabolic pathways, such as amino acid catabolism and mitochondrial transporters (e.g., 2-oxoglutarate/malate carrier protein), also showed reduced expression. Conversely, genes associated with oxidative stress responses, detoxification, and membrane transport were induced, reflecting a compensatory survival strategy. These results demonstrate that EU07 disrupts F. graminearum both morphologically and at the transcriptional level, suppressing virulence-associated pathways while triggering stress adaptation. This dual impact highlights B. velezensis EU07 as a promising biocontrol agent and provides candidate fungal genes for targeted RNAi-based crop protection strategies
Tactical behaviors in men’s and women’s middle-distance global championship track finals
Purpose: To analyze tactical behaviors associated with performance in track middle- distance global championship finals. Methods: Finalists’ season-best (SB), finishing race time (RT), 100m section times, and intermediate positions were obtained from 800-m and 1500-m men’s and women’s finals in two Olympic Games and five World Championships. Differences between medalists (M), fourth to eighth (T8), and ninth to 12th/13th (T12) ranked finalists in relative performance (relative to SB), RT and section times were determined. Pearson correlations between intermediate position and section speed with final position, and probability of winning a medal at each race point were calculated. Results: A very high correlation was found between intermediate and final position at first 100m in the women’s 800-m (r = 0.84;p = 0.008), which was maintained throughout the race. M were relatively faster than T8 in men’s and women’s 800-m finals
(p = 0.006;d = 0.87, and p = 0.039;d = 0.59, respectively). Differences in relative performance between groups in 1500-m finals appeared at the end of the race, although they arose earlier in women’s races. Probability of winning a medal decreased with lower intermediate positions, especially in the latest race stages. Conclusions: A high intermediate position as well as the ability to run fast in the latest race stages seem critical to medaling in track middle-distance global championship finals. The abilities to adopt leading positions for the whole 800-m event, and to generate an endspurt, relatively faster than the rest of competitors, in the 1500-m event, are critical
The role of virtual field trips in Geography higher education: A perspective paper
In this perspective paper, we explore the role virtual field trips (VFTs) may play in creating a more resilient, sustainable and equitable field education for Geography students in higher education as we move away from the pandemic but into a financially precarious higher education environment. While in-person field trips are a fundamental part of Geography (and allied subjects) education, there is growing recognition of the equality, diversity, and inclusivity (EDI) barriers presented by fieldwork, the environmental and financial costs of trips, and the vulnerability of field education to disruptions. During the pandemic, there was a shift to online remote learning, which saw innovation and growth in the development of VFTs. Written from a staff perspective, this paper aims to review the opportunities and challenges VFTs present in education and consider future directions for this pedagogical practice. We argue VFTs should not replace in-person trips, but they can enhance field education and may help to address EDI and sustainability challenges. We identify that the resourcing and development of VFTs is a particular challenge and suggest that developing communities of practice and cross-institutional global collaboration could be one effective way to avoid duplication of time and effort as well as sharing valuable knowledge and expertise. Cross-institutional sharing of VFTs would also support the development, implementation and evaluation of VFTs as a teaching tool and would support continued innovation in this teaching practice
