Lifeline of the Valley: Atlas creation for the Bagmati River

    No full text
Our sponsor, Smartphones For Water Nepal, lives by the phrase "You can't manage a resource, you don't measure". In this spirit, we created an atlas of the Bagmati River system using GIS to improve accessibility, clarity, and usability of existing data. We present original figures of hydrological characteristics, land use changes, river morphology, water quality metrics, and more to support research and conservation initiatives

Internet Channel Impact on Insurance Consumer Behavior

    No full text
Since the digital transition of the insurance industry, innovative technology continuously changes the insurance market, creating a need to re-evaluate consumer behavior. The goal of our project is to investigate the behaviors and internet channels used by young professionals to purchase health insurance in the United States and China, providing recommendations to Hangzhou Baoguan Technology. Our findings suggest that there is little statistically significant correlation between consumer characteristics and behavior, but meaningful comparisons can be made between the two markets

Preserving the traditional crafts of Fukui Prefecture, Japan

    No full text
Despite their cultural significance, traditional crafts are disappearing due to lifestyle trends and rapidly evolving markets. Our project studied the struggles and existing support strategies for artisans in the Echizen-Sabae region of Fukui Prefecture, Japan. We found that while a diverse set of support strategies are in place, artisans continue to struggle with finding successors, adopting digital marketing tools, and declining interest in traditional crafts. Improving the branding of the region and its crafts will help artisans successfully transition to online sales. We also determined that wholesalers, designers, and younger or second-career artisans from outside the area play active roles in connecting other entrepreneurs to support initiatives and new consumer groups

Creating a Chatbot for an ECE Design Course

    No full text
This MQP develops an AI-driven chatbot designed to support students in an ECE design course at WPI. The chatbot tackles common course challenges and is embedded in Canvas, WPI’s Learning Management System. The chatbot knowledge base includes course materials, schedules, and technical references. This allows it to give context-aware responses to a range of student questions. The team used an iterative approach, employing expert interviews, tool comparisons, live testing, and adjustments based on student feedback. Students used the chatbot throughout the term, and results indicate that the system consistently provided relevant guidance, improved access to course information, and offered support for design tasks. This work lays the groundwork for broader AI tools in engineering education

Analysis of Pressure and Temperature Effects on Jet Flow

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to investigate and predict flow behavior through variations in feed pressure and temperature by identifying the fluid loss terms of viscous flow, and quantifying how these parameters influence an injector’s exit velocity. This was done through controlled pressure and temperature testing, measuring the output volume to determine the corresponding velocities. These velocities were then compared to the theoretical velocity calculated using Bernoulli's equation modified with loss coefficients. The results showed that the flow could be predicted with greater than 90% accuracy, with deviations from ideal flow observed at higher pressures

Wireless Wearable Pulse Oximeter and ECG Monitor

    No full text
Photoplethysmography (PPG) has become increasingly more accessible as modern sensors become smaller, more power-efficient, and easier to integrate into wearable systems. Leveraging these advances, we developed a multi-wavelength PPG system that combines optical analog sensor transduction and filtering, real-time signal processing, and adaptive motion artifact cancelling to extract and detect physiological events. Our system utilizes this information to determine pulse rate, detect atrial fibrillation (AFib), estimate blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), and mitigate motion artifact induced noise. Through iterative testing, we evaluated signal quality and demonstrated the platform’s capability to detect peripheral pulse patterns even in the presence of motion

    Agri-Drone Development Part 1

    No full text
This project displays the improvements and repurposing of a pre-existing medical carrier packaging drone into an agricultural drone to meet increasing needs in the agricultural industry. The main purpose of the drone is to spray water over crops in an organized pattern. The work mainly focuses on modifying the aircraft’s structural components such as the base and body, payload system, landing mechanism and onboard electronics to support precision agriculture tasks such as crop monitoring, targeted payload delivery, and field data collection. The resulting design of this project highlights the versatility of UAS, and their ability to improve sustainability, and efficiency in agriculture
