    Feasibility Study for the Detection of Damage to Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels with Phase Array Ultrasonic Testing

    When discussing the field of Nondestructive Examination, there are various techniques and instrumentation that can be utilized for analysis of components. However, with newer technology and the development of newer forms of technique, it is critical to explore exactly how these can be applied. This work will aim to explore one newer technique, Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing, and determine the viability of its use for examining Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels (COPVs). Currently, the types of vessels have been used in a variety of ways such as in transportation vehicles. More notably, these vessels are used in aerospace applications hence the importance of inspecting these components before use. A development of a test plan was utilized to provide a guide to obtain results that could be comparable to those already collected by established techniques such as ultrasonic testing, shearography, acoustic emission, etc. The test plan was created to be able to be system independent and identifies key test parameters such as probes, frequency, imaging modes, and suggestions for future work

    Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy And Qris: Leveraging Systems To Improve Academic Achievement Of Marginalized Students

    Culturally sustaining pedagogy is being utilized to support racially, ethnically, and linguistically diverse students in some classrooms and schools across the nation. Minoritized students currently have higher disciplinary rates and lower graduation rates. This leads to the question: at what age should educators begin implementing culturally sustaining pedagogy (CSP) to support positive academic, social, and emotional outcomes in young children? This thesis explores how preschool programs implement culturally sustaining practices in their classroom environments through interactions with students, family/community engagement, and social justice activities. I also examine how the implementation of CSP improves academic, social, and emotional outcomes among minoritized children. CSP is the ideal approach to creating high-quality programs for marginalized students in early childhood programs. Quality Rating Improvement Systems (QRIS), which work with early childhood programs, to improve their quality, provide a potential system that can be leveraged to support the national implementation of CSP. I propose implementing CSP through QRIS will improve the quality of early childhood programs and thus, improve outcomes in early childhood education for minoritized students. In this thesis, I provide background on QRIS and examine the ways QRIS can leverage training, practice-based coaching, and ongoing assessments to further the implementation of culturally sustaining pedagogy in preschool classrooms nationwide. Implementing CSP in QRIS would establish a need for early childhood coaches who specialize in CSP to provide on-site coaching to early childhood programs nationally. QRIS systems implementing CSP would fundamentally shift the way early childhood thinks about quality and the ways in which we assess quality for marginalized communities

    Assessing Urban Tree Coverage Along The U.S.-Mexico Border: A GIS Analysis Of Paso Del Norte

    In recent years, researchers have extensively studied the spatial distribution of social demographics and urban tree canopy (UTC) in urban cities, but very few, to this date, address U.S.-Mexico border cities. To date, there is no research that assesses the distribution of urban tree canopy (UTC) in the city of El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, along the U.S.- Mexico border. Leveraging advanced mapping techniques and GIS tools, the study performs comparisons between countries (Juárez vs. El Paso urbanized areas and intra-country (within each country). It compares land cover classifications, assesses variations in UTC distribution across census tracts and Área GeoEstadística Básica (AGEBs), and explores potential spatial clusters. Drawing on landcover data with a resolution of 0.6m and 8.5m, the research contributes to the global understanding of urban green infrastructure (UGI) distribution, such as UTC. Also, using census data, the study addresses the distribution of vulnerability through the construction of the Binational Social Vulnerability Index (BSVI) for Paso Del Norte. The analysis confirms previous studies’ assessment of urban morphology in Paso Del Norte, identifying clustering along the international boundary and city centers. Results reveal inequitable access to UTC across Paso Del Norte, with higher social vulnerability in Ciudad Juarez and census units closer to the border in El Paso. By employing GIS, this study advances knowledge on UTC distribution, addresses environmental injustices, and sheds light on trends in U.S.-Mexico border cities\u27 UTC distribution

Findings from this study will contribute to the existing literature by shedding light on the prevalence and manifestations of workplace bullying in K-12 education, as well as its implications for individual well-being, organizational culture, and educational outcomes. The study aims to inform the development of targeted interventions and policies to prevent and address workplace bullying, thereby fostering healthier and more supportive educational environments for educators

    If Subsequent Results Are Too Easy to Obtain, the Proof Most Probably Has Errors: Explanation of the Empirical Observation

    Many modern mathematical proofs are very complex, checking them is difficult; as a result, errors sneak into published proofs, even into proofs published in highly reputable journals. Sometimes, the errors are repairable, but sometimes, it turns out that the supposedly proven result is actually wrong. When the error is not noticed for some time, the published result is used to prove many other results -- and when the error is eventually found, all these new results are invalidated. This happened several times. Since it is not realistic to more thoroughly check all the proofs, and we want to minimize the risk of errors, it is desirable to come up with some methods to select the most suspicious proofs -- so that we can be more attentive when checking those. One such heuristic -- developed by mathematicians -- is that if subsequent results are too easy to obtain, the proof most probably has errors. This empirical heuristic works in many cases, which leads to a natural question: Why does it work? In this paper, we provide a possible explanation for this heuristic\u27s success

    Comparative Study Of Hydrogen Embrittlement On Ebm Inconel 718 As-Built And Hiped Specimens

    This study investigates the effects of hydrogen embrittlement (HE) on Inconel 718 parts produced using Electron Beam Melting (EBM) with a spot melting scanning strategy, focusing on analyzing the material\u27s microstructure and mechanical properties. This research aims to understand the impact of hydrogen charging on both as-built and Hot Isostatically Pressed (HIPed) samples of Inconel 718, a material widely used in high-stress applications in aerospace and energy industries.The methodology included detailed characterization using techniques such as Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) followed by hydrogen charging of EBM-fabricated Inconel 718 samples. Mechanical testing, including microhardness and tensile tests, was conducted to evaluate the changes in properties due to hydrogen charging. Microstructural analysis through EBSD revealed a randomized crystallographic texture, with TEM and SEM providing insights into dislocation structures and precipitate distributions. Key results indicated hydrogen charging significantly increased hydrogen content, especially in HIPed samples. Microhardness tests showed a pronounced hardness gradient near the charging face, demonstrating the embrittling effect of hydrogen. Tensile testing revealed that while the as-built samples maintained their mechanical properties after hydrogen charging, HIPed samples experienced a substantial reduction in ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation. The study concludes that EBM-fabricated Inconel 718 components are susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement, particularly after HIPing. The findings underscore the need for optimized EBM and post-processing techniques to mitigate the risks of hydrogen embrittlement, ensuring enhanced performance in hydrogen-rich environments. These insights contribute to the broader application of EBM Inconel 718 in critical industries, emphasizing the importance of managing hydrogen effects in advanced manufacturing processes

    Robust Multivariate Estimation And Inference With The Minimum Density Power Divergence Estimator

    The estimation of the location vector and scatter matrix plays a crucial role in many multivariate statistical methods. However, the classical likelihood-based estimation is greatly influenced by outliers, potentially leading to unreliable decisions. Hence, a fundamental challenge in multivariate statistics is to develop robust alternatives that can maintain performancein the presence of outliers and deviations from the assumed data distribution. Unfortunately, methods with good global robustness often substantially sacrifice efficiency. To address this, we propose the adoption of Minimum Density Power Divergence (MDPD) estimation, a well-established robust technique known for its efficiency and statistical robustness to outliers and model violations. Focusing on multivariate contaminated Gaussian models, we present the first-order optimality conditions associated with minimizing the loss function underlying the MDPD estimator. We also describe a computationally efficient iterative algorithm designed to converge to a local minimum of the loss function. Additionally, we develop a robust one-way Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) test based on the MDPD estimator, which is particularly useful for analyzing multiple dependent variables simultaneously, especially when a significant correlation between dependent variables exists. The asymptotic properties of the MDPD estimator and proposed MANOVA test are derived under suitable regularity conditions. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations are further conducted to empirically evaluate the statistical efficiency and quantitative robustness of the proposed methods. Furthermore, we provide real-world dataset examples on robust principal component analysis (PCA), multivariate regression, and one-way MANOVA tests. Our proposed approach is observed to be competitive or superior when compared both to classical likelihood-based methods and robust techniques based on the Minimum Covariance Determinant (MCD) estimator
