Margini di autonomia per le «filiae familiarum»

    Get PDF
Through sources mainly drawn from authors of II and III centuries A.D., among which a significant number attributed to Gaius, the essay will investigate the claims relating to negotiating and processual capacity of the filiae familiarum during the Antoninian and Severan Age. By analysing the filiae familiarum cases, two different kinds of procedural capacity will be shown: the active and the passive one. Moreover, some examples will focus on other interesting issues about filiae familiarum. Moreover, this essay will focus on their freedom of negotiating, their role in the market, and on the limits and boundaries they would have faced if they had run a business activity

Determinants of Income Inequality: A Compositional Data Approach

    Get PDF
The determinants and correlates of income distribution have received significant attention in economics and public policy literature over recent decades. Income distribution, representing the share of income received by each quintile or decile of a population expressed as a vector of nonnegative proportions that sum to one, is inherently compositional data. However, most research has traditionally used aggregate inequality measures, such as the Gini coefficient, as the dependent variable when modeling relationships with economic indicators. Unlike a compositional data analysis (CoDA) approach, this reliance on aggregate measures limits insights into the tradeoffs among income classes as inequality determinants change. To date, only one study has applied a logratio-based model to analyze the determinants of income inequality in the U.S., leaving substantial gaps in understanding the broader implications of CoDA in income studies. To address this, our study proposes a Dirichlet regression model for country-level income distribution, integrating relevant economic and development indicators. This model aims to identify key determinants of income inequality and assess their specific impacts on income shares across different income groups. The performance of our proposed model is compared against a traditional Gini-based model, highlighting its potential for more nuanced and comprehensive insights into income distribution dynamics

International Commercial Arbitration Discourse: A Corpus-Based Study of Complex Prepositions in Arbitral Awards

In today’s globalized world, the increase in international disputes has led to a greater reliance on arbitration for dispute resolution (Born 2001, p. 1; Bhatia et al. 2018, p. 1; Gotti 2008, p. 221). Arbitral awards, the outcomes of these proceedings, are vital for understanding the evolution of international arbitration practices (Bhatia et al. 2012, 1). Historically, arbitral awards were underexplored due to the confidential nature of arbitration (Bhatia et al. 2012, p. 1). However, the past decade has seen a shift towards greater transparency, with more awards being published to aid legal development (Bhatia 2010, p. 468; Mourre, Vagenheim 2023, p. 265; Resnik et al. 2020, p. 612). The launch of Jus Mundi in 2019, an AI-powered legal search engine, has further democratized access to a wide range of legal information through its partnerships with global arbitral institutions. This technological advancement enhances access to legal knowledge and discoursal data (Bhatia 1993; Swales 1990). This research builds on the work of leading scholars in arbitration discourse (Bhatia et al. 2003, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2018), collecting a selection of English-language arbitral awards via Jus Mundi for linguistic analysis. The study asserts that cultural differences persist in the reasoning within arbitration, reflecting the influence of legal traditions on linguistic choices (Gotti 2008, p. 232). This perspective aligns with the idea that texts and genres are intertwined with their institutional and professional contexts (Bhatia et al. 2012, p. 1). Legal discourse, shaped by its environment (Fairclough, Wodak 1997, p. 276), varies across legal systems. Focusing on corpus linguistics, this study examines the use of complex prepositions signaling textual authority (Bhatia 1998) in arbitral awards from various arbitration seats, using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The emphasis on complex prepositions is justified by their importance in legal English, suggesting significant findings can be expecte

Les échanges de voeux au nord Cameroun : stratégies discursives, valeurs sémantiques et ethos

This article examines the pragmatics of the communicative act of well-wishing during the Ramadan fast-breaking celebration in Maroua. The speech act is studied on the strength of four situations observed in families, and its analysis is based on Kerbrat-Orecchioni's politeness model (1992, 1996, 2005). The ethnolectal characteristics show that the votive speech act is strongly affected by factors such as religion, collectivism and social values. The prevalent formulations are both explicit and implicit and are based on a very wide range of morphosyntactic and semantic properties. The study also highlights the semantic content of the speech act of well-wishing, which underlies and predetermines the speakers' linguistic choices. In votive utterances, the collectivist nature of the society plays a predominant role and is actualised linguistically by personal deixis: affective, relational, and inclusive pronouns.
