    «Le persone e le cose»: memorie da riconquistare

    EnThe silence about something might be a consequence of the will not to take on, or the definite sign of concentration, of deep acceptance (M. Bachtin, The aesthetics of verbal art, 1979). The awareness of such an immovable ambiguity is at the origin of this work which presents, through a variety of genres, a tale of research, re-discovery, public reflections and private conversations offered by Cosimo Pagliara in the long time he dedicated to the territory of the Leuca Cape. From the first research in the necropolis at Vereto, to the excavation campaigns of the sanctuary of Porcinara Cave, to the transcript of the words of 'Two Night for Vereto', the perspective is constant, with the look toward the past and the focus on the human things. To take again possess of these stories, and to disseminate them is, in our opinion, a significant cultural project to share community memories and values, in continuity with the work of those who, before us, and probably in a better way, acted to tell «the people and the things».ItIl silenzio su qualcosa potrebbe essere una conseguenza della volontà di non farsi carico, oppure il segno deciso di concentrazione, di accettazione profonda (M. Bachtin, L'estetica dell'arte verbale, 1979). La consapevolezza di tale inamovibile ambiguità è all'origine di questo lavoro che presenta, attraverso una varietà di generi, un racconto di ricerca, riscoperta, riflessioni pubbliche e conversazioni private offerto da Cosimo Pagliara nel lungo tempo da lui dedicato al territorio del Capo di Leuca. Dalle prime ricerche nella necropoli di Vereto, alle campagne di scavo del santuario di Grotta Porcinara, alla trascrizione delle parole di 'Due Notti per Vereto', la prospettiva è costante, con lo sguardo verso il passato e l'attenzione verso le cose umane. Riappropriarci di queste storie e divulgarle è, a nostro avviso, un progetto culturale significativo per condividere memorie e valori comunitari, in continuità con il lavoro di chi, prima di noi, e probabilmente in modo migliore, ha agito per raccontare «le persone e le cose»

    EnTopic of the text is the study of the shipping lanes, before the ancient Romans, through the Strait of Otranto, from the archaic age to the Hellenistic age, using also the recent archaeological and epigraphic data. The point of view aims to consider the many ports, landings and coastal sanctuaries along the routes, studying not the individual sub-regions, but the macroarea that includes the Gulf of Taranto, the Iapigian Promontory, Cape Palascìa, Gargano, Karaburun Peninsula, Ionian Islands and the Strait of Corfu. These single sub-regions have many affinities, so we can considering the shipping lanes, before the ancient Romans, like cabotage routes and crossing routes along a macro-region between the most southern area of the Balkan Peninsula and the Apennine Peninsula.ItArgomento del contributo è la ricostruzione delle rotte di navigazione preromane attraverso il Canale d'Otranto, per un arco cronologico focalizzato tra l'età arcaica e l'età ellenistica, anche alla luce di recenti dati archeologici ed epigrafici. Il punto di osservazione adottato mira a considerare la pluralità di porti, approdi e luoghi di culto, lungo rotte ampiamente conosciute, guardando non più alle singole subregioni, ma ad una macroarea, che comprende, tra gli altri, Golfo di Taranto e Promontorio Iapigio, Capo d'Otranto e Gargano, penisola del Karaburun, Canale di Corcira e Isole Ionie settentrionali. Si tratta di subregioni, ognuna specifica, ma legate da tante affinità che conducono a ri-pensare le rotte di navigazione preromane nei termini di una macroregione a cavallo tra le zone più meridionali delle penisole appenninica e balcanica

    Machine Learning-Based Analysis of Cancer Incidence in Jordan (2020–2021): A Decision Tree Approach

    This study aimed to predict cancer types across different regions of Jordan using a machine learning-based Decision Tree Algorithm (DTA) model. The model employed patients’ demographic information—specifically gender, age, and region of residence—as independent variables (IVs) to assess their interaction with cancer types as the dependent variable (DV). The objective was to determine the predictive relationship between these demographic factors and cancer types to support regional cancer profiling and inform targeted public health planning. The research utilized secondary data from the Ministry of Health, the Directorate of Non-Communicable Diseases, and the Jordan Cancer Registry for the years 2020 to 2021. A total of 9,547 cancer cases were analyzed using the DTA model, which effectively identified significant incidence patterns, with the central region of Jordan accounting for the highest number of cases (n = 6,815; 71.4%). The model classified cancer into 25 distinct types based on demographic attributes, with breast cancer being the most prevalent, particularly among middle-aged females residing in the central region. The DTA model demonstrated high efficacy in handling and stratifying large-scale medical data, predicting cancer type interactions, categorizing and labeling datasets, and suggesting potential category mergers. These findings have important implications for the development of focused cancer prevention strategies and the efficient allocation of healthcare resources. However, a key limitation of the study is the incomplete characterization of cancer patient attributes across all Jordanian regions

    The New Family of Exponentiated Half Logistic-Type I Heavy-Tailed-G Distributions with Applications

    In this research, we present and examine  the exponentiated half logistic-type I heavy-tailed-G (EHL-TIHT-G) family of distributions (Fod). Properties and characteristics  of this newly proposed Fod are investigated. Moments, stochastic ordering, order statistics, and R\'enyi entropy were derived. To estimate the parameters of the  EHL-TIHT-G distribution, we used seven estimation methods and a Monte-Carlo simulation exercise to evaluate the performance of the parameter estimates. The simulation investigation showed that the maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs) were the best for this model.  We also derive actuarial risk measures and look at their numerical simulations. Finally, we demonstrate the practical usefulness of the EHL-TIHT-G Fod through two real data examples. Our results suggest that the EHL-TIHT-G distribution can serve as a flexible and valuable model for a variety of applications

    Improved‎ group sampling plans ‎under‎ ‎odd-‎P‎erks-Lomax ‎model‎ with ‎‎‎ ‎limited ‎risks‎‎

    ‎‎‎In this ‎article‎, ‎a group sampling ‎scheme‎ for lot ‎sentencing‎ is developed ‎under ‎time-censoring‎ when the lifetime of a product follows the ‎odd-‎P‎erks-Lomax‎ distribution‎. ‎The test plans are constructed by limiting a ‎linear ‎combination‎ of the producer and consumer risks from frequentist and Bayesian ‎frameworks‎.‎‎ ‎Integer nonlinear programming are used to ‎designate‎ the optimal ‎number ‎of ‎groups‎ and acceptance ‎limit‎. ‎Several tables and figures are constructed to scrutinize the performance of the proposed testing ‎strategies. ‎The‎ proposed optimal ‎test ‎plans outperform the traditional optimal two-point plan in terms of sample size‎. ‎‎ ‎Furthermore‎, ‎using prior information for defectives proportion ‎increases the effectiveness ‎of ‎the ‎proposed ‎plans.‎ A numerical example is provided to demonstrate the application of the introduced ‎scheme.
