Three news hybridis of Serapias in Salento (Southern Apulia): Serapias xromanoi (S. neretina x S. vomeracea), Serapias xnatalizioi (S. neretina x vomeracea var. longipetala) and xserapicamptis nohae Canacamptis papilionacea x neretina

The recent elevation to the rank species of Serapias neretina promoted in-depth studies on the conservative state of its populations and their diffusion in Apulia. The distribution known to date of Serapias neretina refers chiefly to its locus typicus represented by the locality of Porto Selvaggio, in the municipality of Nardò, province of Lecce, on the western Ionian coast; on the same line of coast, there is a small population in Bosco Cuturi, municipality of Manduria, province of Taranto. Other site where S. neretina grows abundant is in the municipality of Tricase, in the province of Lecce; therefore, recently (2024) some populations of S. neretina has been identified in the municipality of Monteroni, province of Lecce and in the municipality of Nohae, fraction of Galatina, province of Lecce. The relatively widespread diffusion of S. neretina, from the province of Lecce to the province of Taranto, on large coastal stretches and in the internal areas of Salento, has led to a deepening of knowledge on this species, on its distribution and on the conservative state of the populations through repeated inspections and field observations; during these visits some hybrids of Serapias neretina were identified, the taxonomic specifications of these are reported below: Serapias ×romanoi (Serapias neretina × Serapias vomeracea); Serapias ×natalizioi (Serapias neretina × Serapias vomeracea var. longipetala) and ×Serapicamptis nohae ( Anacamptis papilionacea × Serapias neretina). The first two hybrids, interspecific, are mainly united by the presence of a wide and ventricular bract, that represents an element that characterizes S. neretina, but the two entities are visibly dissociated from it by the labellum shape; this recalls -and sometimes appears intermediate- in the first case the not very elongated, relatively narrow and vomer-shaped one of S. vomeracea; in the second one, the labellum still arouses keen attention, as it appears decidedly elongated and narrow, inescapably reminding S. vomeracea var. longipetala. The analytical path towards the intergeneric hybrid ×Serapicamptis nohae appears more complex as the morphological traits diverge more profoundly from the original parental forms; in this case the structure plant, the size and number of the flowers, the shape and extension of the bract with respect to the tepal hood, the length/width ratio of the labellum, the conformation of the epichile, the structure of the callus with its lamellae, the overall pigmentation as well as some traits of taxonomic importance took on importance. Field observations and laboratory analyzes suggest, however, that much material still awaits its adequate taxonomic placement and the ongoing investigations will probably tend to further enrich the list of Serapias hybrids from Salento

Bayes Analysis of mRS Followup Data in the Presence of Multiple Categories

Situations are often encountered, especially in medical sciences, where observing each stage of an event is necessary and overlooking it might be risky for the wellbeing of an individual. Keeping the same very viewpoint, this article presents the analysis of a real Modified Rankin score data with multiple responses from a Bayesian perspective using polytomous logistic regression model. The study involves utilizing the Markov Chain Monte Carlo technique for acquiring samples from the resulting posterior distribution. Finally, to check the scope of the model simplification, several covariates have been tested against zero and then a comparison between the full model and the simplified model has been proposed based on deviance information criterion

The aim of this study is to build a better understanding of the motivesto visit public gardens. It identifies the main factors behind visitors’ experiencesand satisfaction with the services provided at Irbid public gardens.Respondents were chosen randomly in selected seven public gardens in Irbid.A self-completion questionnaire was administered to collect primary data and536 questionnaires were returned. The data were analysed using descriptiveand reliability and explanatory factor analysis in addition to other tests suchas One Sample T-Test, Kruskal-Wallis Test, Mann-Whitney U Test, and One-Way ANOVA Test. The primary findings showed that visitors were largelywomen (76 %), married with children (60%), young, i.e., 18-49 years (85.5%),highly educated (65%), and employed (46%). Visitors have previously visitedIrbid gardens (87%) of 1-10 visits (48%), stayed 3-5 hours every visit(72.6%). Many visitors intended to revisit (86.4%), and 85.6%would considerrecommending the gardens to their relatives and friends. The majormotives to visit Irbid gardens include escape, safety, stress reduction, enjoinment, been before, and admiring natural beauty. Visitors showed a highlevel of satisfaction (81.3%). Additionally, visitors’ engagement with gardenvisitation has significantly decreased due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictionsand lockdowns (95.7%). The paper is amongst the first of its kind, whichempirically examined the motives of Jordanian and non-Jordanian visitorsto public gardens, evaluating garden’s services and facilities, understandingvisitors’ future behaviour, as well as examining the effect of COVID-19 pandemicon garden’s visitation

Derivation of Incomplete gamma functions properties with applications

    Get PDF
We derive some useful identities for the incomplete gamma functions using probabilistic techniques. In particular, we use distributions of order statistics from the gamma distribution to derive some identities that involve integration of functions of the incomplete gamma function. We use these properties to construct bivariate Gamma distributions

Politica, mito, serie = Politics, myth, series

    No full text
Serial forms, throughout the historical arc of the phenomenon, have continuously intensified, in synergy with the transformations of the media environment. This paper proposes a strategy for constructing a mediological theory of political seriality, starting from a revisitation of Pareto's model of the genesis of myths, historical studies on the nationalization of the masses, McLuhan's observations, contemporary work on narrative seriality, and the research strands that, over the last two decades, have focused on phenomena which make recursivity an increasingly central factor of loyalty-building and persuasion. Recursivity is understood both as the repetition of emissions over time and as the reiteration of tropes and patterns, such as the leader's body, political TV series, and "memetic" communication on social networks. From this perspective, political communication appears as a stratified ecosystem in which grassroots production, the intervention of spin doctors, and broadcast and algorithmic media flows interact, each endowed with its own logics of recursivity, remediation and mythological condensation. In the current situation, the serialization of narrative, audiovisual and digital forms plays a crucial role in shaping the political imaginary, intensifying emotions, rituals, mythologies and polarizations. Within the digital ecosystem, processes of micro-serialization amplify social impulses, simplify complex conflicts and typify subjects and groups through predictive devices, thereby contributing to the construction of unstable and reactive political myths. Research should therefore take into account the systemic framework of flows that participate in the production of the political imaginary and examine the specificities and interactions among different forms of serialization – journalistic, ritual, spectacular, memetic and fictional – which contribute to the creation of myths and symbols, the terrain on which struggles for political hegemony are fought. The ability to decode these serial processes appears to be one of the necessary conditions for confronting the crises of representation and collective vision in the digital age

Il controllo dei corpi. The Handmaid's Tale dalla narrazione seriale all'attivismo = Controlling Bodies: The Handmaid's Tale from Serialized Narrative to Political Activism

    No full text
In every political regime, the body is never merely biological matter; it is a point of intersection between knowledge, norms, and power. The Handmaid's Tale (Hulu, 2017–2025, created by Bruce Miller and based on Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel) radicalizes this insight by depicting a dystopian society in which sexuality is serially produced as an instrument of governance. In recent years, the series has permeated contemporary political debate, becoming a laboratory of words and images made available to international activism across a wide constellation of gender-related issues. Its public reception confirms the pervasiveness of television seriality in shaping the social imaginary. The red dresses of the Handmaids have become a tool of widespread performance: protests have transformed an image of discipline and subjugation into an emancipatory icon, overturning the logic of power through the very aesthetics of repetition. This essay investigates the relationship between the series and the forms of activism inspired by it, beginning with a theoretical reflection on the disciplining of bodies and moving toward a sociological analysis that reconstructs the trajectory from imaginary oppression to real-world protest, drawing on analytical frameworks developed in the study of the hybridization of politics, spectacle, and popular culture

Perceptions of Jewish and Israelis in Italy: Evidence from a Survey Experiment on Political Orientation

    Get PDF
Following the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023, and the subsequent outbreak of another phase of the Israel-Palestine conflict, the debate on whether criticism of Israel can mask antisemitic prejudice in Western countries has intensified. This study investigates how ideology shapes perceptions of Jews and Israelis in Italy, a context historically marked by right-wing antisemitism and left-wing anti-imperialist critiques. We employ a survey experiment (n=1,119) to measure attitudes toward Jews and Israelis/Israel, to test the pop-theory that posits a "horseshoe" pattern of antisemitism - that is, antisemitic attitudes should be most prevalent at the extremes of the political spectrum and attenuated at more central positions. Contrary to expectations, our findings show no significant convergence of antisemitic attitudes at the ideological extremes. Instead, left-leaning respondents distinguish more clearly between Jews and Israelis, whereas right-leaning respondents conflate the two identities. These results highlight the mechanism that disentangles prejudice from political critique and underscore the moderating effect of ideology in shaping public opinion toward Jewish/Israeli communities

How a Dehumanising Form of Language Can Impact Outgroups' Decision to Engage in Violence: An Analysis of the Italian Far Left

    Get PDF
Despite considerable scholarship investigating engagement in violence, literature has overlooked how daily interpersonal relations and the use of a moralistic form of language impact individuals' decision to engage in violence. Presenting my research findings, this paper intends to bridge this gap by examining personal stories of a group of Italian former far-left militants, operating during the 'Years of Lead'. It employs narrative analysis, using Rosenberg's and Gilligan's perspectives on violent behaviour as theoretical lens. This paper identifies a three-step process, resulting from human cognition and partly implemented through a moralistic form of communication: firstly, employing Manichaean worldviews to make sense of society: secondly, the progressive dehumanisation of those falling into the negative side of these worldviews - outgroups; finally, outgroups' choice of engaging in violence. This paper finds that by promoting outgroups' dehumanisation, a form of language based on moralistic divisions significantly contributes to shaping outgroups' decision to engage in violence
