Video game dialogue as input for language learning. An analysis of lexical coverage
No full textThe impact of extramural encounters with English in video games on L2 English learning is high. However, linguistic analysis of the language of the scripted dialogue in video games is still scarce. The current study investigates the lexical coverage of the lines of non-player characters in a small corpus of nine games from three different genres. The analyses show a lexical coverage comparable to that of British and American films. Furthermore, our data suggest that lexical coverage differences largely depend on individual games rather than genre, although setting may play some role

Get PDFIn the paper, I present a corpus-based study on putative restrictions on articles within German light verb constructions. It is commonly proposed that the nominal element within a light verb construction is either used without any article or that the definite article is clitizised onto a preceding preposition. Based on data collected from the German reference corpus, I show that this restriction does not hold. The analysis is based on a sample of 50 light verb constructions headed by the light verb stehen. I argue that light verb constructions are basically unrestricted concerning the PP-internal article, but light verb constructions show different preferences concerning article use. Thus, general claims concerning a restriction on article variance within German light verb constructions cannot be supported by actual language data. On the contrary, the result of the study reveals that restrictions on the article do neither present a criterion for identifying light verb constructions nor for distinguishing them from other types of predicative constructions

No full textThis study explores the role of Google News as a news aggregator and its impact on shaping media diets during the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Considering platforms not only as technological agents but as socio-technical and political-cultural entities embedded in global, national, and local contexts, the study compares media diets aggregated by Google News in Georgia, Italy, Poland, Serbia, and Turkey. Through comparative analysis, the study investigates Google News' editorial agency and the potential accessibility inequalities among countries. The analysis reveals divergent patterns of source nationalisation and concentration, highlighting Google's influence in building diverse media diets, with different shades of national-centric news and sources' variety both from a glocal and diverse perspective of plurality. The findings emphasise Google News' dual strategic role as a socio-technical, cultural, and political actor, simultaneously maintaining a 'minimum' Western influence, reflecting national and geopolitical asymmetries of power within global information ecosystems

Maximianus’ verses are replete with intertextual allusions to his predecessors, including the epic poet Virgil.
