Some metaphors of ʽWATERʼ in the phraseology of three Balkan languages from a cognitive linguistic perspective: An ongoing research project

    Get PDF
This article analyses, within the framework of cognitive linguistics, the use of some WATER metaphors in the phraseology of three Balkan languages, Albanian, Macedonian and Modern Greek. Water, which occupies a significant place in human experience and perception, provides a versatile framework for metaphorical expression in various aspects of human life. In phraseology, these metaphors are likely to play a crucial role in conveying abstract concepts and cultural ideas rooted in the experience of water and its various manifestations in the three Balkan languages. This research project aims to shed light on the complex relationship between language, culture, and cognition, highlighting the role of water as a potent metaphorical resource in the Balkan linguistic repertoire. Our study is based on the variety of spoken and written language used by the average educated person, including newspapers, fiction and mass media. We have not considered the rich dialectal heritage of each of the three languages. We hope to extend the phraseological analysis of water to some of the dialects of these languages in the future

Asini e scecchi. Una lettura degli usi fraseologici e paremiologici asinini in italiano e siciliano

From folk tales to literature, from mythology to animated films, and generally in the collective thought, the donkey has at times represented the symbolic animal of obstinacy, at other times of ignorance, and stupidity. Less frequently, it has been portrayed as indispensable, for example, when it becomes a symbol of patience and tireless. Numerous phraseological expressions and proverbial idioms related metaphorically to its physicality, behaviors, ways of acting, and work have crystallized over time in both Italian language and Sicilian dialect, and today they are fully integrated into daily linguistic uses. Starting from an analysis of the lexical elements it. asino / sic. sceccu, some classificatory considerations are proposed regarding the semantic value of ˹donkey˺ in the idiomatic uses. It’s studied inside a sample of phraseological and paremiological units that express characteristic and behavioral traits of the animal

Fraseologia e paremiologia nelle grammatiche scolastiche (1980-2024): le grandi assenti?

The essay analyses the space dedicated to phraseology and paremiology – to their theoretical explanation as well as to exercises – into a corpus of Italian grammar textbooks for secondary school, published from 1980 to 2024.  First of all, the research shows a greater experimentation on this topic in handbooks published until the early nineties, but also uncertainty on definitions and methods; secondly it demonstrates that phraseology and paremiology do not receive enough attention on twenty-first century books, although studies show the teaching benefit of these idiomatic aspect of language, for the acquisition and/or the consolidation of both lexical and textual competence

Metaphors in Prime Ministers’ address to the Nation on Coronavirus. The case of ‘country lockdown’ televised statements in Italy and in the UK

    Get PDF
In the first months of 2020, when the Coronavirus pandemic globally broke out, many countries’ governments became aware of the unprecedented risks for their populations’ health and of the toll on their countries’ health care systems. So, emergency measures were passed that would limit people’s contacts and circulation in closed environments. Some of these drastic and dramatic measures were lockdowns that would severely limit or prohibit the movement of people outside their homes. These measures were communicated to the corresponding populations by the countries’ Prime Ministers (PMs) in person via televised press conferences. The study considers the public announcements of country lockdowns placed in Italy and in the United Kingdom in March 2020. Framed within Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff and Johnson 1980), the study conducts a qualitative analysis of two statements by the then Italian PM Giuseppe Conte and the then British PM Boris Johnson, focusing on the use of metaphors to refer to the COVID-19 outbreak and the first emergency measures that had to be taken to tackle the tragic situation. Results show that both PMs define the virus with the conceptual metaphor CORONAVIRUS IS CHALLENGE/THREAT, while the solution to the emergency is conceptualised in terms of war effort. Results also show that, while Johnson’s speech emphasises the importance of the measures to protect the NHS and people’s lives, Conte’s statement emphasises the population’s emotional commitment and personal sacrifice for the greater good
