Sense of community and community development: An integrative review

    Get PDF
Several perspectives have been considered while examining the association between a sense of community (SOC) and community development, as a SOC has been one of the critical societal factors positively associated with several outcomes. Thus, the association earns an evaluation of its current state and prospects. The present study adopts an integrative review approach, bibliometric and content analysis,  to understand SOC and community development literature trends, themes, and theoretical, contextual, and methodological implications. The types of analyses conducted in bibliometrics are descriptive, performance analysis, and science mapping. While the descriptive and performance analyses reveal research constituents' current status and  performance across various research constituents, several research clusters and themes were identified through science mapping. The identified clusters were Social Support, Community Development, Education, Community Well-being, and Online Education. The emerging themes were Community Engagement and Participation, Urban Development, Social Context, Measurement of SOC, Organisational SOC, and Public Spaces. Further, the content analysis of selected articles was used to uncover the theoretical, contextual, and methodological implications of SOC and community development literature. Future research recommendations regarding theoretical, contextual, and methodological implications were proposed based on the research gaps identified.

Navigating challenges and fostering resilience: Changes in work practices of Italian residential child care professionals during the COVID-19 lockdown

The COVID-19 syndemic presented significant challenges to welfare communities. Drawing upon an online survey from 366 Italian professionals working in residential child care (RCC), this study investigates changes in their work practices during the COVID-19 lockdown, focusing on critical issues and useful emerging practices and competences. Analysis show convergences in the experiences of educators and managers and changes in educational and organizational issues in different phases of lockdown. Among the critical issues are children’s wellbeing, space reorganization, and the emotional costs of containing externalizing symptoms. Resources include communication with children and an increase in internal cohesion. The lockdown also brought expansion of professional competencies such as emotional support skills, adaptability, and creativity. Ultimately, our results highlight an organizational resiliency capacity of RCC units in the face of such a disruptive event. We discuss the implications for welfare community practices and propose areas for future research and improvement.

What Ukraine Teaches Us About International Relations and Vice Versa

The Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine on the 24 February 2022 is seen by many as a catastrophe of global proportions and a critical juncture for the International Relations, both as academic discipline and as political practice. In this review essay, I offer a stock-taking exercise that puts Ukraine-specific debates into the broader context of the International Relations (IR) discipline. My aim is twofold: to show how debates about Ukraine go right to the heart of major meta theories in IR and to use Ukrainian specificity and complexity to problematize compartmentalized approaches to “area studies” and to some strands of “postcolonialism”. I conclude by showcasing recent publications of scholars of and from Ukraine to provide a glimpse into this relatively small but vibrant academic community. I further argue that Ukraine’s predicament helps highlight the persistence of Cold War binaries, with their strong colonial baggage, including within the so-called critical IR

Museum of the sea and ecological identity. Rethinking museums in Milazzo

    Get PDF
Siso is the skeleton of a sperm whale that hangs from the vaulted ceiling of a deconsecrated church in the castle of Milazzo, a coastal city in the North-East of Sicily. Siso was stranded below the cliffs along the Milazzo peninsula in 2017 and its skeleton was rescued and reconstructed by a small group of volunteers in the deconsecrated church that would soon become the site of MUMA, Museo del Mare (https://www.mumamilazzo.com/site/). Siso's huge body with its tail helplessly entangled in one of the many illegal fishing nets abandoned in the sea shack, tugged on the local population's conscience and changed their vision of museums, tourism, and ecology. Starting as a private endeavour, MUMA has now established various forms of collaboration with local institutions and offers experiences to visitors that include, but go beyond, digitalisation, virtual and augmented reality. In particular, MUMA identifies as an inspirational and educational site where visitors, children in particular, participate, experience, and undertake a Dantesque path towards a novel awareness of the need to protect the sea and its creatures. MUMA is now a partner of the Chersoneso D'Oro ecomuseum, a community-based heritage project that supports sustainable development and offers tourists with experiential opportunities. The chapter concludes with some reflections on how grassroots realities such as ecomuseums can shape the perception people have of the place where they live or they visit. Such participatory realities encourage further cooperation and foster the improvement and appreciation of the natural environment and historical heritage

EnIn this essay it is demonstrated how the institutions of jurisdiction of the great fiefdoms of the Orsini del Balzo family were divided into several degrees up to a feudal court of last resort. After the death of the last Prince Orsini (1463) the King Ferrante, establishes a lieutenancy led by his son Federico, which slowly turns into the first 'Regia Udienza' of the kingdom. This experience was extended to all provinces with the law 'Querula expositione' in 1488, which established the 'Regie Udienze' of the kingdom
