African cosmotheoandric world-view: basis in a quest for an african environmental ethics

    Get PDF
Every ethical rationality presupposes a foundational ontology i.e. the conception of reality on which such an ethical rationality is anchored. Likewise, an environmental ethics presupposes an ontological conception of the reality of the environment. There is increasingly an urgent call from the world political and religious entities, as well as global non-governmental organisations, for measures to mitigate the global environmental crisis. The summon to take urgent responsibility to conserve and care for the environment has placed environment ethics into focus. The largest segment of environmental ethics enshrines ethical reasoning for the care of the environment, argued from value of the environment to human existence. Such value of the environment is an attributed instrumental value i.e. in terms of the usefulness of the environment to humans. It is an ascription to the environment in which, the environment is viewed as natural resource to be exploited by humans for their existence, and hence humans ought to take care of it on that account. This kind of conception has led to manipulation and exploitation of the poor global south by the massively industrial and capitalist global north, that paradoxically is on the lead in the global campaign for mitigation of environmental crisis. There is another understanding of the value of the environment in intrinsic sense. It refers to the value of the environment in itself independent of any human ascription, but in reference to the good of the environment in itself, such that, the degradation of the environment by human activities implies the loss of or disrespect for the good of the environment in itself. An environmental ethics that is anchored on the intrinsic value of the environment requires an ontology that enshrines such conception of the value of the environment. This study presents the African 'cosmotheoandric' world view, as an ontology that implies intrinsic value of the environment. The main argument of the study is that, from the African worldview, we can have an African extraction of environment ethics, as a viable alternative for the care of the planet as the common home of humanity

Etica sintetica e nuove identità artificiali = Synthetic ethics and new artificial identities

    No full text
From a phenomenological perspective, the article highlights the main risks of conversational AI, namely the compromise of human autonomy and emotional manipulation. A "synthetic ethics" is proposed as a response to these challenges. This ethics encourages a reflection on the interaction with synthetic systems, such as robots and other artificial identities, and an ongoing dialogue between philosophers and engineers from the early stages of technology development

An Extension of Akash Distribution by Using Biweight Kernel function

    Get PDF
In this paper, we introduce new continuous distribution called Biweight- Akash distribution. This distribution derived by using the Akash distribution and the Biweight kernel function. Several properties of Biweight-Akash dis- tribution are studied such as the reliability and hazard rate functions, the moments, Re‘nyi entropy. The maximum likelihood estimators of the un- known parameter is derived. A simulation study is introduced for different values of the parameter distribution. A comparison between the performance of the new distribution and well-known distributions using a real data sets are illustrated. The new distribution fits more than Exponential, Lindley and Akash distributions

Determining the Factors Affecting the Phenomenon of School Bullying by Using Factor Analysis

This study aimed to determine the most important factors leading to the phenomenon of school bullying from the perspective of middle school students in some public and private schools in Al Ain city in the United Arab Emirates. To achieve the study objectives, the researcher used the analytical descriptive approach. The study sample consisted of (330) male and female students who were selected by using random stratified way. The researcher used a paper questionnaire that consisted of (34) items which included the factors leading to school bullying; its validity and reliability were verified. The factors were ordered and classified into certain domains according to their importance by using factor analysis in (SPSS V. 26). The results revealed that the most important factors leading to school bullying are school-related factors, family factors, media factors, and psychological factors; ordered respectively, where the school-related factors accounted for (15.657%) of the total factors leading to school bullying

“Ti regalerò fucili”. Ironia e saggezza nelle parodie del primo Eco

    Get PDF
In his first works Umberto Eco reveals himself to be a multifaceted author, able to move easily from scientific essay to parody, one considered as the reverse or the negative of the other. There’s a relationship of specularity between the pieces of Diario minimo and the essays on mass culture of Apocalittici e integrati, which clearly emerges from a parody like Fenomenologia di Mike Bongiorno, where Eco literally destroys the popular figure of the anchorman with the excuse of describing it analytically. Yet parody in Eco, despite its corrosive force, does not have a moralistic or inquisitorial value, but a sceptical-ironic one: castigat more ridendo. It is an essay of “serious entertainment” that functions as an “extreme litmus test” to verify the validity of the cultural references of its time, both the “high” ones and those linked to mass culture. Diario minimo is crossed by a subtle pedagogical tension which, as Paolo Fabbri claims, “has the aim of transmitting a morality […] based on an unsuspected common sense, but conveyed by a humorous and ironic form” (Fabbri 2010). Beyond the right to be irreverent which is invoked by the author on the back cover of the book there is not a need for “semiological guerrilla”, but a form of minimal wisdom that disguises itself as a playful spirit

World-Wide English: The Internet as a language learning tool

    Get PDF
Access to the Internet, both to study and for leisure activities, is ubiquitous today. The Web contains an extensive range of contents, of which about 55% is in English (W3Techs, 2023). In Iceland, a collective seven-year research project was carried out on English language exposure (Arnbjörnsdóttir, Ingvarsdóttir 2018). One of the findings was that students learn more English vocabulary through access to the media in their free time than through focused learning. Studies on the increased informal contact with English were also carried out in other European and extra-European contexts (Berns et al. 2007; Kusyk et al. 2020; Muñoz, Elke 2020) and Italy is seeing a similar trend (Pavesi, Ghia 2020), but research about naturalistic English learning in the country is still scarce. The ongoing PRIN project “The informalisation of English language learning through media: Language input, learning outcomes and sociolinguistic attitudes from an Italian perspective” (Prot. 2020NNJTW3) aims at filling this research gap. The goal of this presentation is to give a descriptive overview of a set of data collected in the framework of the PRIN project at the University of Salento, Lecce. A survey about English media access and usage was administered to 995 University students. This contribution focuses on the access to the Internet, in particular to YouTube, social media, blogs and forums, web pages, podcasts, radios, apps and e-commerce websites. Data about the frequency and the length of online activities carried out in English will be discussed in relation to students’ self-assessed level of English, their attitude towards the language and their socio-cultural background

Entre terminologie, terminographie et humanités numériques : le projet DIACOM-fr

    Get PDF
The large-scale Digital Humanities applied to foreign languages and literature project (2018-2022) has enabled the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures of the University of Verona to apply a large part of its linguistic, literary and didactic research to the digital humanities. The DIACOM-fr project (terminological database concerning the domain of international trade), which is part of the linguistic axis of this project, has several objectives: 1) to compile a corpus in the field of international trade (and make it available online for public consultation); 2) to develop a digital tool for interrogating this corpus; 3) to extract terminological units; 4) to compile a digital terminology database inspired by Explanatory and Combinatorial Lexicology. The purpose of this contribution is to present the objectives of the project, which has now come to an end
