Formulation and Quality Shelf Life Evaluation of Squash Food Products
Squash is one of the fruit vegetables that grows abundantly in the locality and that there are times of oversupply, thus these are only used as feeds to animals or just go to waste. Squash is a member of the curcubita family that has variety of textures, sizes, shapes and range in flavour. It is considered to be very rich in nutrients needed by our body particularly beta-carotene. It is a good source of Vitamin A and C. It also contains calcium and iron and it has very low calories. (De Leon, 2001).With these statements, the researcher conducted a study on the formulation of squash products such as cookies, tarts, butterscotch and “puto”. It also determined the shelf life or the keeping quality of the products. The standard recipes of cookies, tarts, butterscotch and “puto” were used as the basis for the formulation of the experimental samples. There were three (3) samples of formula or recipe prepared using different amount of squash for each product. These were prepared and coded properly for identification purposes during the evaluation process. The products were evaluated using a score card of sensory evaluation by panel of evaluators. The score card of sensory evaluation was used to determine the best formula in terms of taste, color, aroma, texture and appearance using a Nine-Point Hedonic Scale. Frequency counts, percentages and average weighted mean were used to treat the data gathered. The squash food products as a result of this study were found out to be very liked by the panel of evaluators in terms of taste, color, aroma and texture and stable for a week even without the addition of preservatives
Fruit and Vegetable Wastes as Potential Component of Biodegradable Plastic
Plastic is a material that is very useful to every individual. Commercially plastics that are often used nowadays are petroleum based polymers which take longer years to degrade. These plastics when burned have a negative impact to human and to the environment. They have also detrimental effect to the marine and other aquatic lives when disposed to oceans and other bodies of water. Due to the increasing plastic waste all over the world, researchers are seeking for an alternative that can pass the requirements to be called biodegradable. This study utilized fruit and vegetable wastes as a component in making biodegradable plastic and used additives such as: polyvinyl alcohol as binder, glycerin as plasticizer, soya oil as stabilizer and 5 ml glacial acetic acid. Different formulations were carried out. The products produced were subjected into different tests such as: biodegradability test, chemical solubility test, air test and tensile stress test and were compared to one another. The tests conducted suggest that Formulation 5, which contains 100 g powdered peels, has the largest tensile stress indicating that it has the most tensile strength with considerable biodegradation and chemical solubility

To Stay or Not To Stay: A Descriptive Case Study on a Faculty Member’s Motivation
This is a primary qualitative research about the motivation of an employee in a particular academic institution. Ten measurement tools employed by various research studies were used in this study, such as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Assessment Theory, McClelland’s Needs and Assessment Theory, Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory, Self-Determinant Theory. The study found out that the chance to serve the people is his best motivation. His need for affiliation is the one that stood out for him which means that he is seeking for approval of his work and friendship or belongingness are important for him as an employee of that institution. Despite this, what motivated him to come in this institution are because of his close friends working there, the accessibility from his home to the school, and having the chance to give back and serve the people. This study shows how important motivation is for everyone in the workplace especially for the employees like the participant in this study. They should find ways on how to thoroughly understand the employees and how to motivate them. Managers must strive to look at all aspects that could help his/her employee to become a better person and help them achieve an improved performance for the betterment of the organization
Students in Special Science Classes: Their Competency and Career Preferences
This study sought to determine the competency and career preferences of the fourth year high school students in special science classes in Pangasinan. The research-formulated questionnaire was utilized as the main data- gathering instrument. Different schools from the five (5) school divisions of public secondary schools in Pangasinan were involved where 251 samples were drawn. The descriptive- survey method was employed. Appropriate statistical tools were used to analyze the data of interest. Based on the findings, the following data were drawn: The fourth year high school students in special science classes are dominated by female, more than one- third resides in an urban area while the rest reside in the rural area. Likewise, more than one-third received honors/awards while the remaining are not recipients of any awards/honors. College level comprises the biggest percentage in the educational level of both parents, and one fourth of their total population is educator, engineer, architect, doctor, nurse and businessman. The average monthly family income shows that their socio-economic status varies and mostly receives 20,000 and below. Among the three science subjects, Advanced Physics may be considered as the most difficult than Advance Chemistry and Research II. The students regard themselves high in their characteristics and learning styles. The most preferred career of students in special science classes is Accountancy. The students are very highly preferred on the reasons of their course choice, that is to use the knowledge and skills they learned in special science classes, and they love surfing the internet. The students are adept in the use of computer technology and fare better in conducting research than in doing tasks that involve mathematical analysis and language proficiency. The performance of students is highly proficient but their grades in Research II and Advanced Chemistry does not affect their career preferences except for Automotive Mechanic. The performance based on their grades in Advanced Physics affect the student’s career preferences such as nursing, elementary education, economics, medicine, chemical, and electronics and communication. The knowledge and skills of students signifies a relationship to their performance in Advanced Chemistry, Research II and Advanced Physics. And, the student’s characteristics, learning styles and knowledge and skills in science do not influence most of their career preferences. The following recommendations are proposed for possible course of action: 1) Higher authorities must provide proper orientation on the main goal of Science Curriculum among teachers and students on why it was formulated; 2) The rules and policies of science curriculum should be considered by both administrators and teachers in order to realize the effectiveness of the goal of science curriculum; 3) Administrators should provide science seminars and trainings such as conducting research, manipulation of science equipments to further enhance their scientific ability, thus enhancing the scientific knowledge of their recipients; 4) Teachers must be inclined to sciences to be qualified to teach the science subjects such as Advanced Chemistry, Research and especially on Advanced Physics as the most difficult subject; 5) A follow up study must be done to trace the graduates of science curriculum; 6) Further studies are suggested to be conducted regarding the performance and the choice of career among students of regular classes; 7) Further studies should be conducted among other schools under science curriculum to make the research more reliable
Phytochemical Analysis and Cytotoxicity Potential of Pittosporum pentandrum (Mamalis) Crude Leaf Extract Using Brine Shrimp Lethality Assay
In the Philippines, Pittosporum pentandrum, locally known as Mamalis, is intently utilized by traditional herbalists to treat patients with various cases. Although Mamalis have been medicinally useful internationally and locally, only few studies have provided scientific data to confirm its cytotoxic activities. In this present study, crude extract of Pittosporum pentandrum or Mamalis leaves was tested in vivo for its cytotoxic effects against brine shrimp nauplii and relate its toxicity results with its known phytochemical and ethnobotanical activities. In summary, Mamalis crude extract contain phytochemicals such as alkaloids, triterpenoids, flavonoids and tannin that may be attributed to its ability to be used as a herbal medicine against pathogenic microorganisms or cancerous cells. Using BSLA, the cytotoxic capability of Mamalis crude extract is evident at 0.01% (100 (100 µg/ml) to 0.09% (900 µg/ml) with a LC50 at 0.05% (500 µg/ml). The toxicity criteria of the said LC50 is ‘toxic’ and ‘moderately toxic’ according to Meyer’s and Clarkson’s toxicity index, respectively. These results also proved that Mamalis crude extract can be further examined as an antimicrobial or antitumor agent
Cognitive Ability, Psycho-sociological Characteristics and Study Habits of Students: A Structural Model on Mathematics Performance
Cognitive ability predicts mathematics performance. However, there are other factors like study habits and psycho-sociological characteristics which also influence students’ performance. With these factors, this study aspires to obtain a structural model that best fit college mathematics performance. The study was conducted using descriptive - correlational method. Employing convenience sampling, a total of 278 second year to fourth year BSED students of the selected state colleges and universities in the Davao region were subjected to study. Descriptive statistics was used to determine the respondents’ cognitive ability level, psycho-sociological level, level of study habits, and college mathematics performance. The structural equation modeling (SEM) was then employed to test the structural model fit of the variables. Results show that the respondents have very satisfactory cognitive ability level based on high school GPA and college admission test. Their psycho-sociological and study habits levels were both slightly high. Their college mathematics performances were also in very satisfactory level. A structural equation model that best fit mathematics performance was determined. The latent variables - cognitive ability, psycho-sociological factors, and study habits have direct effects to the mathematics performance with values 0.17, 0.08, and 0.42, respectively. It means that if these variables increase, college mathematics performance also increases. In the model, the variables being considered significantly contribute to the variation in performance by 25%. For further research on mathematics performance, inclusion of other non-cognitive factors is recommended
