Factors Considered in the Use of Angry Registers in Northern Catanduanes Bicol Conversations

    Get PDF
Angry register (AR), in which certain nouns, adjectives, and verbs are replaced when the speaker is angry – is typologically rare and apparently limited in distribution to just the Greater Central Philippine subgroup. In general, lexical items from the normal register are simply replaced by synonymous words (excluding curse words and other vulgar words) from the angry register, and the sentences remain syntactically and morphologically identical to normal register sentences. As such, to explore this unique linguistic feature limited to a few Philippine languages, the study was conducted using the analytical framework called Hymes’ SPEAKING model. Through the use of observation sheet and interview, the factors considered by Catanduanganon speakers when using angry registers (ARs) were examined. Data were collected from 90 participants divided into three groups (high school, college, and graduate/ professional levels) from the Northern municipalities of Catanduanes such as Viga, Pandan, Caramoran and Panganiban. Results specified that the use of ARs is influenced by the setting, gender, relationship, and age difference of the speaker and recipient of ARs

    Get PDF
This study determined the academic engagement of public STEM* senior high school (SHS) learners in General Physics across different schools in Pangasinan, Philippines. Utilizing a quantitative correlational research design, it further investigated the relationship of academic engagement across certain profile variables, levels of engagement, dimensions of engagement and academic performance. It was found that learners had a moderate academic engagement and was influenced by but not correlated with their academic performance. The learners had high behavioral and emotional academic engagement towards their co-learners and was both found to be correlated to each other respectively. However, behavioral and emotional academic engagement towards school as a whole did only have a significantly moderate positive correlation in which draws to the conclusion that behavior could either or neither be more or less likely directed with positive emotionality in engaging with school science activities and facilities. A suggestive scheme in increasing the academic engagement was develop proposed. it is also recommended to evaluate assessment practices in teaching General Physics in order to be enlightened with the differing learners’ reports across academic performance

Abstract - The incorporation of technology in the delivery of instruction is a phenomenon that cannot be ignored today. Blended learning as an approach is the trend in many educational institutions and is evidently practiced in the Philippines (Rabacal, 2018). This approach is an integration of classroom or face-to-face learning with online instruction.  According to Ngo (2018), the combination of the strengths of both traditional classroom and computer assisted instruction can improve students’ learning.  Studies related to the use of Edmodo in blended learning and e-learning show positive results (Tavukcu, 2018, Yin et al, 2018).  This study explored on the benefits and drawbacks of Edmodo as a learning platform from the perspectives of students.  There were 49 participants in this study.  They were freshmen Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering students of Iloilo Science and Technology University. With the teacher-researcher, they were enrolled in Purposive Communication, a general education course offered during the school year 2018-2019.  The study employed qualitative research design and used qualitative content analysis.  The data were culled from the students’ reflections which were turned in as individual assignment in the class site via Edmodo.  These data were then initially and openly coded and the emerging notions, concepts, and categories were identified, analyzed, and interpreted.   The results of the study revealed both the benefits and drawbacks of using Edmodo.  The benefits and advantages can be categorized into different characteristics which include accessibility and convenience, communication and connectedness, functionality, usefulness, social interaction, and practicality.  Despite the multifold benefits of using Edmodo, several drawbacks were found from the results of the study.            &nbsp

Challanges and Concerns in Attaining Sustainable Development Goals: Basis for SDG Advocacy Framework in South Cotabato

    Get PDF
Just like any other provinces, one of the growing concerns and challenges in Mindanao, is the attainment of sustainable development, particularly in South Cotabato. The limited understanding of the Philippine Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) leads to the deterioration of the people for social tolerance, environmental stewardship, and participation in community-based decision-making. Such regression has been rooted in various factors. One of which is the poor realization of the Philippine Agenda 21. Another hurdle is brought by the lack of competencies of teachers to educate and empower them to address sustainability issues. This gap calls for state colleges, universities, government leaders, and business sectors to increase their level of awareness on the dynamics of sustainable development. This study was conducted to 1,828 people in South Cotabato. It determined the level of awareness, concerns, and issues relative to sustainable development. It employed a descriptive survey design. Findings of the study revealed that majority of the people "strongly agree" that every person must be taught with knowledge, values, and skills relative to sustainable development. This implies that state colleges and universities must be the prime movers in advocating their SGDs. To further, the crafting of the ESD framework was made as a proactive approach that may increase people\u27s abilities, empowering them to seize action on transformation heading towards sustainable development. &nbsp

    Get PDF
This pioneering study aimed to develop, validate and propose four (4) 22-page Curriculum Competency Checklists for the research subjects 1 to 4 of the Special Science Program of the Philippines, and measure its level of spiral progression, contextualization, practicality, and acceptability. The proposed Curriculum Competency Checklist were first drafted in 2014 by the researcher and went on with several revisions in 2015 to 2017. They were subjected to validity test by five (5) experts from various universities in the Philippines along the four (4) areas: spiral progression, contextualization, practicality, and acceptability. Findings revealed that the four proposed Curriculum Competency Checklists were found to be very high in spiral progression, very highly contextualized, very highlypractical, and very highly acceptable. With this, the researcher recommends that the proposed curriculum competency checklist be adopted by education program supervisors in Science as reference and/or guide in their respective jurisdictions in the teaching of Research subjects in the Special ScienceProgram; and that a periodic evaluation and/or further validation of the proposed curriculum competency checklists may be instituted to further provide strengths on the spiral progression and contextualization of the competencies

    Get PDF
Abstract - English, as an international language, is used in the Philippines as official language on communication and instruction in addition to Filipino irregardless of culture, regional origin, dialect, among others. This study determined phonological features in Philippine English used by the tourism service providers who have direct contact to tourists in their locality. Questionnaire, in sentences form, was used in data gathering, which were read by the respondents to elicit their segmental and suprasegmental features and was documented through video/audio recording. Transcribed words from sentences were rated through International Phonetic Alphabet symbols and for suprasegmetal features those were focused on intonation in answering WH/Yes-No questions, and sentences in statement form. Results showed some mispronounced or replaced or interchanged in consonant and vowel sounds. Their suprasegmental features sounded somewhat similar to native speaker. Factors such as age, educational attainment, and geographical location somewhat affect their phonological features. It is a realization as English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher that it is not to push sounding like an English native speaker, but to use the learned English as second language, counting this as our own Philippine English with our own phonological features, noting that there is no extreme communication breakdown. Data of the study can be used by State Colleges and Universities, and other higher education institutions in partnership with the tourism department to design intervention programs as part of their extension program on capability building to tourism service providers.   Keywords -  Philippine English, Phonological Features, Segmental, Suprasegmenta

Newspaper editorials constitute a part of media discourse, which is an extremely important field of research in intercultural rhetoric analysis and EFL (English as a foreign language)/ESL (English as a second language) studies. Specifically, certain features of editorial headlines and also their important role in monitoring and directing readers’ attention have made the interface between the linguistic analysis of newspaper editorial headlines and teaching of EFL as a relevant issue in language teaching. Through conducting a contrastive textual analysis of selected headlines, culled from the electronic versions of editorials of mainstream newspaper, Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI), and those of alternative online newspaper, Rappler, the present study aimed at exploring the kind of textual and rhetorical strategies the two newspapers used for propagating their preferred ideologies. The results of the study indicated certain qualitative and quantitative similarities and differences between the mainstream and non-mainstream editorial headlines. In terms of verbal/ nonverbal distinction, Rappler’s editorial writers preferred to write full sentences headlines, while those of PDI are inclined to write the headlines in punchy and short phrases. Moreover, the analysis revealed that the two papers to some extent were identical in using existential presupposition and lexical presupposition for persuasion purposes. Lastly, in terms of rhetorical devices employed, metonymy was found to be used in the two papers equally. However, in terms of other rhetorical devices, editorial writers in PDI use literary devices such as rhetorical questions and testimonials which made the headlines look persuasive. Meanwhile, writers in Rappler preferred another set of devices such as quoting out of context, parallelism, and neologism
