    Combining catch-based indicators suggests overexploitation and poor status of Indonesia\u27s deep demersal fish stocks

    The Indonesian deep-slope demersal fisheries are economically valuable and contribute to the wellbeing of millions of people. However, the sustainability of these fisheries is uncertain because they lack data and assessment. As a precursor to management, we developed and applied a framework for using standardized catch per unit effort (CPUE) and spawning potential ratio (SPR) as indicators to assess eight primary species-fishing gear complexes: the Malabar blood snapper Lutjanus malabaricus (droplines and longlines), goldbanded jobfish Pristipomoides multidens (droplines and longlines), sharptooth jobfish P. typus (droplines and longlines), crimson snapper L. erythropterus (droplines), and rusty jobfish Aphareus rutilans (droplines). We standardized CPUE by identifying relevant fishing trips using a species-association approach and removing any changes in the index not attributable to abundance by using a delta-generalized linear model. SPR values were estimated on a per-recruit basis from life-history parameters using length data. Results indicated that in 2020, all stocks were unhealthy (SPR values \u3c 25%) with only a few exceptions (e.g., P. multidens and L. erythropterus). Most fishing grounds with low SPR values had stable or decreasing CPUE trends, suggesting that current fishing rates are suboptimal or unsustainable. However, L. erythropterus had an increasing CPUE trend but moderate to low SPR, indicating that fishing pressure has decreased so SPR may be an underestimate, leading to an optimistic but uncertain conclusion about stock health and the sustainability of current fishing rates. Such discrepancies between CPUE and SPR may be challenging for the implementation of management measures, but we have outlined and applied a framework for interpretation. The most recent yield values set by the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries for these stocks, however, are 1.4–2.4 times higher than our calculations.     A diazotrophy-ammoniotrophy dual growth model for the sulfate reducing bacterium Desulfovibrio vulgaris var. Hildenborough

    Sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) comprise one of the few prokaryotic groups in which biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) is common. Recent studies have highlighted SRB roles in N cycling, particularly in oligotrophic coastal and benthic environments where they could contribute significantly to N input. Most studies of SRB have focused on sulfur cycling and SRB growth models have primarily aimed at understanding the effects of electron sources, with N usually provided as fixed-N (nitrate, ammonium). Mechanistic links between SRB nitrogen-fixing metabolism and growth are not well understood, particularly in environments where fixed-N fluctuates. Here, we investigate diazotrophic growth of the model sulfate reducer Desulfovibrio vulgaris var. Hildenborough under anaerobic heterotrophic conditions and contrasting N availabilities using a simple cellular model with dual ammoniotrophic and diazotrophic modes. The model was calibrated using batch culture experiments with varying initial ammonium concentrations (0–3000 µM) and acetylene reduction assays of BNF activity. The model confirmed the preferential usage of ammonium over BNF for growth and successfully reproduces experimental data, with notably clear bi-phasic growth curves showing an initial ammoniotrophic phase followed by onset of BNF. Our model enables quantification of the energetic cost of each N acquisition strategy and indicates the existence of a BNF-specific limiting phenomenon, not directly linked to micronutrient (Mo, Fe, Ni) concentration, by-products (hydrogen, hydrogen sulfide), or fundamental model metabolic parameters (death rate, electron acceptor stoichiometry). By providing quantitative predictions of environment and metabolism, this study contributes to a better understanding of anaerobic heterotrophic diazotrophs in environments with fluctuating N conditions

    In this introduction to the Special Issue “Translating Transnational Feminisms,” we argue for the integral position of feminist translation practices and the theories of Feminist Translation Studies as tools for both local and transnational feminist solidarities. Beginning with the understanding that transnational feminist solidarities rely on not only linguistic translation but also cultural fluencies that allow for exchange rather than simply the import or export of locally bound feminist praxis, we illustrate that the practice of feminist translation thus carries with it the conflicts, the fraught and unfolding contestations of meaning, and the ever-evolving conceptions of gender, feminism, and solidarity that exist not only between languages but also within any language and its political and cultural landscapes

    Industrial education 4.0: The role of human, technology, and data literacy

    This study aims to confirm the effect of industrial education 4.0 on data, technology, and human literacy among postgraduate students in Indonesia. The research adopted covariance-based structural equation modeling by employing AMOS 25 to examine the relationship between variables. The model estimation was performed using confirmatory factor analysis as a standard model for measuring industrial education 4.0 and involved structural model analysis to confirm the hypotheses. The population in this research paper was 2.958 postgraduate students in 32 study programs, while the sample was 312 respondents, which was determined using the proportional random sampling technique. This study tested the three hypotheses proposed, showing that industrial education 4.0 has a positive and significant effect on data literacy, technological literacy, and human literacy among postgraduate students in Indonesia. This paper raises the need for developing industrial education 4.0 on these literacies

    Performance of a MEMS IMU for Localizing a Seaglider AUV on an Acoustic Tracking Range

    A Seaglider instrumented with an inertial attitude and heading reference system was tracked for three days on an acoustic tracking range in Dabob Bay, Washington, operated by the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Keyport, WA, USA. Inertial measurements were integrated to yield estimates of position and compared with tracked positions. Within 3 min, the integrated positioning results deviated from tracked positions by more than a kilometer. The addition of a depth constraint from pressure sensor measurements slowed the error growth over time, but even with this constraint, measurements were too noisy to accurately determine position without aid from additional sensors. Inertial data did contribute to accurate localization when used to estimate vehicle attitude and incorporated into an existing flight model; however, results did not demonstrate marked improvement over existing flight models. Although not a decisive demonstration of vehicle positioning with a standalone low-cost, low-power sensor, the results presented here provide a benchmark for comparison as MEMS inertial sensors continue to evolve using a valuable ground-truth of subsea Seaglider position not previously available

    Venous thromboembolism, chronic liver disease and anticoagulant choice: effectiveness and safety of direct oral anticoagulants versus warfarin

    Background Little to no data exist to guide treatment decision in patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE) and chronic liver disease. Objectives To assess the effectiveness and safety of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs)—individually and as a class—vs warfarin and between 2 DOACs in patients with acute VTE and chronic liver disease. Methods We conducted a retrospective, US claims–based, propensity score–matched cohort study in adults with acute VTE and chronic liver disease who had newly initiated oral anticoagulants between 2011 and 2017. The primary outcome was a composite of hospitalization for recurrent VTE and hospitalization for major bleeding. Results The cohorts included 2361 DOAC-warfarin, 895 apixaban-warfarin, 2161 rivaroxaban-warfarin, and 895 apixaban-rivaroxaban matched pairs. Lower risk of the primary outcome was seen with DOACs (hazard ratio [HR], 0.72; 95% CI, 0.61-0.85), apixaban (HR, 0.48; 95% CI, 0.35-0.66) or rivaroxaban (HR, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.61-0.88) vs warfarin but not apixaban-rivaroxaban (HR, 0.68; 95% CI, 0.43-1.08). The HRs of hospitalization for major bleeding were 0.69 (95% CI, 0.57-0.84) for DOAC-warfarin, 0.43 (95% CI, 0.30-0.63) for apixaban-warfarin, 0.72 (95% CI, 0.58-0.89) for rivaroxaban-warfarin, and 0.60 (95% CI, 0.35-1.06) for apixaban-rivaroxaban. Recurrent VTE risk was lower with apixaban (HR, 0.47; 95% CI, 0.26-0.86), but not DOACs (HR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.59-1.12) or rivaroxaban vs warfarin (HR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.57-1.14) or apixaban-rivaroxaban (HR, 0.92; 95% CI, 0.42-2.02). Conclusion While the magnitude of clinical benefit varied across individual DOACs, in adults with acute VTE and chronic liver disease, oral factor Xa inhibitors (as a class or individually) were associated with lower risk of recurrent VTE and major bleeding
