Tourists are people too: Nonresidents’ values, beliefs, and acceptance of a nearshore wind farm
Decision makers frequently voice concerns regarding potential impacts of offshore wind development to coastal tourism; yet, little research has tracked tourists\u27 attitudes towards an offshore wind project over time. In this study, an intercept survey captured viewpoints of visitors to and seasonal residents of Block Island (U.S.A.) prior to, during, and after construction of a nearshore, five-turbine development. A novel two-item measure reveals increased levels of acceptance over time and positive correlations between acceptance and having seen construction activities or the completed project. Regression and path analyses are consistent with values-beliefs-norms (VBN) theory, with underlying values (particularly altruism) and beliefs about the ocean and effects of the wind energy development explaining a substantial share of tourists\u27 acceptance of the project. These findings suggest that rather than following narrow desires for an uninterrupted seascape, tourists’ responses to offshore wind energy developments are influenced by deeper beliefs and guiding principles

A study of ignition and combustion of liquid hydrocarbon droplets in premixed fuel/air mixtures in a rapid compression machine
The combustion of two fuels with disparate reactivity such as natural gas and diesel in internal combustion engines has been demonstrated as a means to increase efficiency, reduce fuel costs and reduce pollutant formation in comparison to traditional diesel or spark-ignited engines. However, dual fuel engines are constrained by the onset of uncontrolled fast combustion (i.e., engine knock) as well as incomplete combustion, which can result in high unburned hydrocarbon emissions. To study the fundamental combustion processes of ignition and flame propagation in dual fuel engines, a new method has been developed to inject single isolated liquid hydrocarbon droplets into premixed methane/air mixtures at elevated temperatures and pressures. An opposed-piston rapid compression machine was used in combination with a newly developed piezoelectric droplet injection system that is capable of injecting single liquid hydrocarbon droplets along the stagnation plane of the combustion chamber. A high-speed Schlieren optical system was used for imaging the combustion process in the chamber. Experiments were conducted by injecting diesel droplet of various diameters (50 µm \u3c do \u3c 400 µm), into methane/air mixtures with varying equivalence ratios (0 \u3c ϕ \u3c 1.2) over a range of compressed temperatures (700 K \u3c Tc \u3c 940 K). Multiple autoignition modes was observed in the vicinity of the liquid droplets, which were followed by transition to propagating premixed flames. A computational model was developed with CONVERGE™, which uses a 141 species dual-fuel chemical kinetic mechanism for the gas phase along with a transient, analytical droplet evaporation model to define the boundary conditions at the droplet surface. The simulations capture each of the different ignition modes in the vicinity of the injected spherical diesel droplet, along with bifurcation of the ignition event into a propagating, premixed methane/air flame and a stationary diesel/air diffusion flame
Social media literacy: Sociocultural instruction and community college students
Although literacy researchers have paid increasing attention to online information literacy, curricula are usually centered around webpages rather than social media, which is the more popular media platform for young adults. We developed and introduced a social media literacy curriculum to a summer bridge program for marginalized community college students. Our instruction was designed to center and build on students’ lived experiences, and we found that students purposes for using social media and their knowledge of credible sources was not aligned with traditional approaches to information literacy. Students perceived social media as a tool for fun and connectivity and their sharing practices were influenced by contextual factors, not the credibility of information. Although students expressed willingness to try new strategies to evaluate information, these strategies assumed an understanding of credibility and sourcing that not all students shared. Digital literacy education is essential for everyone, including seniors to sustain their quality of life. The Digital Academy for Seniors aims to instill digital skills among seniors through a non-formal learning program. This qualitative research aimed to provide a comprehensive description of how the program can develop digital resilience and improve the quality of life of seniors. This study concluded that the program can improve the knowledge and attitudes of seniors in using digital media safely. Both of these are important assets for seniors to develop their digital resilience so that they can take advantage of digital media to support their higher quality social lives. These new findings are significant because they differ from previous research that focused on the limitations of seniors in using digital media. The program has demonstrated that anyone can learn digital literacy and benefit from it, regardless of perceived limitations

Toward systems-informed models for biologics disposition: covariates of the abundance of the neonatal Fc Receptor (FcRn) in human tissues and implications for pharmacokinetic modelling
Biologics are a fast-growing therapeutic class, with intertwined pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, affected by the abundance and function of the FcRn receptor. While many investigators assume adequacy of classical models, such as allometry, for pharmacokinetic characterization of biologics, advocates of physiologically-based pharmacokinetics (PBPK) propose consideration of known systems parameters that affect the fate of biologics to enable a priori predictions, which go beyond allometry. The aim of this study was to deploy a systems-informed modelling approach to predict the disposition of Fc-containing biologics. We used global proteomics to quantify the FcRn receptor [p51 and β2-microglobulin (B2M) subunits] in 167 samples of human tissue (liver, intestine, kidney and skin) and assessed covariates of its expression. FcRn p51 subunit was highest in liver relative to other tissues, and B2M was 1–2 orders of magnitude more abundant than FcRn p51 across all sets. There were no sex-related differences, while higher expression was confirmed in neonate liver compared with adult liver. Trends of expression in liver and kidney indicated a moderate effect of body mass index, which should be confirmed in a larger sample size. Expression of FcRn p51 subunit was approximately 2-fold lower in histologically normal liver tissue adjacent to cancer compared with healthy liver. FcRn mRNA in plasma-derived exosomes correlated moderately with protein abundance in matching liver tissue, opening the possibility of use as a potential clinical tool. Predicted effects of trends in FcRn abundance in healthy and disease (cancer and psoriasis) populations using trastuzumab and efalizumab PBPK models were in line with clinical observations, and global sensitivity analysis revealed endogenous IgG plasma concentration and tissue FcRn abundance as key systems parameters influencing exposure to Fc-conjugated biologics
