Failure to fail – Perspective from junior faculty preceptors on the challenges of evaluating underperforming students in the experiential learning environment
Introduction: Preceptors serve as the gatekeepers between individuals progressing from student pharmacist to independent practitioner. This responsibility is challenging if a student is not progressing as required and is at risk of failure. In this article, we will review the potential consequences and barriers of “failing to fail” a student, share the emotions that come with the decision, and suggest actions that may aid in preceptor decision-making. Commentary: A preceptor\u27s failure to fail a student has a global impact on many parties including the student, their future employer and patients, the preceptor, and the school or college of pharmacy. Despite supportive factors, preceptors may experience an internal struggle about the ripple effect of failing or not failing an experiential student. Implications: Underperformance in the experiential setting is a complex issue that remains largely unseen due to “failure to fail,” a concept that should be researched further in the pharmacy setting. Empowering preceptors, particularly newer preceptors, to assess and manage failing students is possible through increased discussion around the topic and focused preceptor development programs
Hepatic Transporters Alternations Associated with Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): A Systematic Review
Background and Objectives: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a progressive liver disorder and is usually accompanied by obesity, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes mellitus. NAFLD progression can lead to impaired functions of hepatocytes such as alternations in expression and function of hepatic transporters. The present study aimed to summarize and discuss the results of clinical and preclinical human studies that investigate the effect of NAFLD on hepatic transporters. Methods: The databases of PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science were searched systematically up to 1 March 2022. The risk of bias was assessed for cross-sectional studies through the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale score. Results: Our review included ten cross-sectional studies consisting of 485 participants. Substantial alternations in hepatic transporters were seen during NAFLD progression to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) in comparison with control groups. A significant reduction in expression and function of several hepatic uptake transporters, upregulation of many efflux transporters, downregulation of cholesterol efflux transporters, and mislocalization of canalicular transporter ABCC2 are associated with NAFLD progression. Conclusion: Since extensive changes in hepatic transporters could alter the pharmacokinetics of the drugs and potentially affect the safety and efficacy of drugs, close monitoring of drug administration is highly suggested in patients with NASH
Developing virtual and augmented reality applications for science, technology, engineering and math education
The Rhode Island IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence Molecular Informatics Core at the University of Rhode Island Information Technology Services Innovative Learning Technologies developed virtual and augmented reality applications to teach concepts in biomedical science, including pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, cell culture and nanotechnology. The apps were developed as full virtual reality/augmented reality and 3D gaming versions, which do not require virtual reality headsets. Development challenges included creating intuitive user interfaces, text-to-voice functionality, visualization of molecules and implementing complex science concepts. In-app quizzes are used to assess the user\u27s understanding of topics, and user feedback was collected for several apps to improve the experience. The apps were positively reviewed by users and are being implemented into the curriculum at the University of Rhode Island
Financial inclusion, financial capability, and financial fragility during the COVID-19 pandemic
Purpose: Financial inclusion can be proxied by banking status. The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential effects of financial capability on the financial fragility of U.S. adults with various banking statuses during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Design/methodology/approach: This study utilized the 2021 National Financial Capability Study (NFCS) dataset to investigate the relationship between financial capability and financial fragility among consumers with different banking statuses. The analysis controlled for employment shocks, health shocks, and other consumer characteristics. Banking statuses included fully banked, under-banked (utilizing both banking and alternative financial services), and unbanked individuals. Logistic regression analyses were conducted on both the entire sample and subsamples based on banking statuses.
Findings: The results showed that financial capability was negatively associated with financial fragility. The magnitude of the potential negative effect of financial capability was the greatest among the fully banked group, followed by the underbanked and unbanked groups. Respondents who were underbanked or unbanked were more likely to experience financial fragility than those who were fully banked. Additionally, respondents who were laid off or furloughed during the pandemic were more likely to experience financial fragility than those without employment shocks. The effect size of financial capability factors was greater than that of COVID-19 shock factors. These results suggest that higher levels of both financial capability and financial inclusion may be effective in reducing the risk of financial fragility.
Originality: This study represents one of the first attempts to examine the potential effects of financial capability on financial fragility among consumers with various banking statuses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, this study offers new evidence to determine whether COVID-19 shocks, as measured by health and employment status, are associated with financial fragility. Additionally, the effect size of financial capability factors is greater than that of COVID-19 shock factors. The results from the 2021 NFCS dataset provide valuable insights for banking professionals and public policymakers on how to enhance consumer financial wellbeing
Increasing equity in the classroom through ungrading
Ever wonder how the grades you assign impact student learning? Research has shown that traditional grading scales often negatively impact student learning by encouraging students to value the grade over the learning process and by disadvantaging students who come to the classroom with less knowledge of or experience with course content. This workshop explores the practice of ungrading, an umbrella term that encompasses a wide range of strategies and practices including specifications grading, contract grading, and mastery-based grading. The facilitator and participants unpack these strategies and practices, outlining how library and LIS educators can engage with ungrading on a spectrum that ranges from redesigning a single assignment to reenvisioning an entire course. By considering new pathways forward in grading and supporting student success, we consider how we, as library and LIS educators, can forge into the future
The Walker Revised: A Healthier and Improved Walker
One of the most important and most useful tools used in rehabilitation for patients with mobility issues is the classic walker. However, after thorough and intense research, this walker has great potential to possess a higher risk in patients. After users would walk with the traditional walking aid, users would begin to develop a permanent hunch position that could be detrimental to the users health. Additionally, the traditional walker came with pain points in the wrists as users would put all of their weight on their wrist causing soreness and pain in their arms. Moreover, the traditional walker was not multi-surface friendly making it difficult for users to adapt to changing floor surfaces as they walked in public. Despite these problems, there were additional problems developed with the traditional walker aesthetically, and mobility of the walker were all found to be additional problems.
It is this team\u27s goal to develop a newly designed walker to assist users and to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The top expectation for our new design is to force the user comfortably to remain in an upright position and to eliminate all pain points associated with the traditional walker. Additionally, it is our team’s goal to make the walking aid a healthy and easy- to-use device to eliminate all these devastating health concerns.
This design will be evaluated and guided with the help of medical professionals. We as a team were fortunate enough to work hand in hand with a Physical therapist and the South Kingston Rehabilitation and Assisted Living home. By doing this, we are able to get professional advice and feedback from healthcare professionals.
The contents of this report will include our completed design and how that design was developed. Furthermore, this report will go through an in-depth analysis of our prototype and how it was compared to other design concepts. Numerous Pugh and QFD analyses were conducted and all located in this report
IGUS Inspection Table
Miniature Casting Corporation has requested Team 03 to develop a potential visual inspection system that can transport zinc-casted products to an AI inspection camera to detect any possible defects. The products will then be sent to an automated sorting system to separate defective parts from accepted parts.
This inspection system needed to inspect parts at 96% accuracy, inspect at least 40,000 parts per day, under 8 feet tall, use 110V plug style for any electronics, use a maximum of 115 PSI of air, and be easy to maintain. These design requirements were combined with customer requirements to create design specifications for the entire system. By use of literature searches, patent searches, Pugh Analysis, and QFD, 120 different design concepts were generated between the four members of the team. A singular system was chosen based upon these design concepts which was presented, but then soon thereafter scrapped due to unrealistic integration of the subsystems and overall complexity of the system as a whole. 2 new systems were then created that were completely different from the initial design. This was then narrowed down to a singular design which sacrificed the quality of the scan for improved integration between subsystems and a less complex mechanism. This design used a conveyor belt to transport the parts to the camera, and air nozzles to both orient the parts for scanning and also to send parts to their proper space after defects were determined.
Little market analysis was conducted, as this system is to be purpose-built for MiniCast, and there are similar systems on the market, but none that would fully meet MiniCast’s demands while also being automated. Financial analysis was conducted, and the system was found to be well-within MiniCast’s budget. As for the Proof of Concept, the main focus was on how the pneumatic system and conveyor system would operate, and the supporting calculations behind the air pressure that would be used to orient the parts for proper alignment when getting scanned by the inspection camera.
In the next semester, Team 03 set out upon completely finalizing the design and building the inspection system. Many design changes were made in order to keep within budget and also to finish within the semester. Some of the major changes that were made were to only use one inspection camera instead of two, and to have a servo motor knock the part over instead of a blast of air. In the end, Team 03 developed a system that is physically complete and working, but needs further refining in the form of minor physical developments, coding, and camera programming in order to fully meet the requirements set by the sponsor. Team 03 wishes that MiniCast can either further the work on this project themselves, or assign a Capstone team next year that can finish this work

Contaminant Back Diffusion from Low-Conductivity Matrices: Case Studies of Remedial Strategies
Recalcitrant groundwater contamination is a common problem at hazardous waste sites worldwide. Groundwater contamination persists despite decades of remediation efforts at many sites because contaminants sorbed or dissolved within low-conductivity zones can back diffuse into high-conductivity zones, and therefore act as a continuing source of contamination to flowing groundwater. A review of the available literature on remediation of plume persistence due to back diffusion was conducted, and four sites were selected as case studies. Remediation at the sites included pump and treat, enhanced bioremediation, and thermal treatment. Our review highlights that a relatively small number of sites have been studied in sufficient detail to fully evaluate remediation of back diffusion; however, three general conclusions can be made based on the review. First, it is difficult to assess the significance of back diffusion without sufficient data to distinguish between multiple factors contributing to contaminant rebound and plume persistence. Second, high-resolution vertical samples are decidedly valuable for back diffusion assessment but are generally lacking in post-treatment assessments. Third, complete contaminant mass removal from back diffusion sources may not always be possible. Partial contaminant mass removal may nonetheless have potential benefits, similar to partial mass removal from primary DNAPL source zones
