ELA and Social studies teachers’ perspectives on the importance of media literacy for student learning

    Get PDF
In this study, researchers aimed to develop an understanding of how English Language Arts and social studies teachers of middle- and high-school students perceive the value of media literacy skills and competencies for their students. The research team reviewed how these teachers rated various media literacy skills utilizing a set of 15 media literacy strategies categorized into three constructs, authors and audiences, messages and meaning, and representations and reality, in a survey demonstrating their perspectives on aspects of media literacy and their importance for student learning. The 860 teachers overwhelmingly recognize the importance of media literacy competencies for their students. Some constructs and competencies were rated more highly than others

Expanding the pathfinder’s purpose: A pedagogical approach to redesigning LibGuides

    Get PDF
Online research guides are an important service in academic libraries. Many argue for an instructional design approach that prioritizes course or assignment focused guides; however, this does not address how to design effective subject or topic guides that often follow outdated pathfinder structures. This case study outlines one subject library’s approach to redesigning their guides with pedagogy and accessibility at the forefront, demonstrating how to apply best practices articulated for course-based guides to a general setting. It addresses how to design effective subject guides to better facilitate patron browsing, promote the collection, and supplement training for staff at service points

    Stopping the Bleed at URI

The number one cause of preventable death is uncontrolled bleeding from traumatic injury. From the unlikely scenario of a school shooting, to a campus car accident or an injury during a sports or club event, possessing skills to effectively stop a life-threatening bleed becomes a matter of life or death. The American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS COT) STOP THE BLEED® program is a campaign to teach communities how to respond effectively and efficiently to life-threatening bleeding in emergencies. STOP THE BLEED® aims to empower individuals with the knowledge and skills to stop severe bleeding by tourniquet application, pressure, and packing of wounds. Currently, STOP THE BLEED® certification courses are not offered for lay people in Rhode Island, creating a significant gap in emergency preparedness within our community. My mission was to utilize my STOP THE BLEED® certification and Associate Instructor title to host certification courses on campus for University of Rhode Island (URI) students. To assess interest, I surveyed 5,000 graduate and undergraduate URI students and received an 8% response rate, primarily from nursing students. While awareness of STOP THE BLEED® was low at 15.8%, there was considerable interest among respondents at 90.4%. After leading a session for URI\u27s Greek Life Directors, I successfully conducted my first certification class, with 18 students completing the course. Through collaboration with URI’s Public Safety Department, Police Department, Health Services, and the Honors Program, we have raised funds to place SAM-XT tourniquets at all 54 AED locations across campus. In observance of STOP THE BLEED® Month in May, my objective is to secure increased funding for the acquisition of additional tourniquets and to enhance awareness and training efforts

    Nordstrom and Generation Z

    Get PDF
This study aimed to investigate the influence of Nordstrom\u27s business practices on the shopping behavior of Generation Z consumers. With the rise of technology and changing consumer preferences, it is crucial to understand how department stores like Nordstrom can adapt to the purchasing habits of this emerging consumer segment. The significance of this study lies in filling the research gap regarding Nordstrom and its engagement with Gen Z. Existing literature primarily focuses on older generations and lacks any insights into the purchasing behavior of Generation Z consumers, especially when it comes to department stores. Gen Z consumers are defined as the generation that comes after Millennials, born after 1997 (Dimock, 2019). It is estimated that nearly a third of this generation was born with access to the Internet and has been virtually connected to the world for some time now (Thangavel et al., 2022). A study was done in 2017 and found that social media has a greater impact on Gen Z than it does on Millennials (Accenture, 2017). Therefore, this study targeted Generation Z consumers, their purchasing habits and motivations, and the role of Instagram marketing and smart retailing to highlight the importance of understanding and adapting to Gen Z\u27s preferences and behaviors. Knowing this information can help Nordstrom be a leading luxury department store for Gen Z

Woman Abuse in Sports-Related Contexts: Social Scientific Knowledge

    Get PDF
There was a vibrant surge in the 1980s and 1990s of social scientific work on men’s abuse of women in sports-related contexts, but this wave receded over the past two decades and eventually disappeared. Recently, however, an international cadre of scholars has revisited the off- and online victimization of women in these settings. The main objective of this paper is to examine what the extant scholarly literature tells and does not tell us about this social problem

Using a Quasi-Experimental Study to Examine Program Participation and Outcomes for Older Adult Intergenerational Technology Program Participants

    Get PDF
To extend the literature on participation in intergenerational technology programs, we conducted a quasi-experimental study consisting of senior center participants, half who took part in the University of Rhode Island Engaging Generations Cyber-Seniors (URI eGen Cyber-Seniors) Program and half who did not. Findings showed that both groups were similar on most variables; however participants did have higher education levels and more positive attitudes toward younger people. We also examined if older adult program participants improved scores on social and technological measures compared to the control group, and we found participants improved on technology use, digital competence, loneliness, and doing unpaid community service measures but not the non-participants
