Systemization & Survival -- “Houston, we have a Problem” – Business Lessons from Apollo 13
In the business world, there are different factors that determine whether a business will survive or not. Apollo 13 film perfectly demonstrates what every business undergoes throughout its lifecycle. Apollo 13 spacecraft started its journey to the moon successfully with the mission being to land on the moon. Unfortunately, within a very short period of time, Apollo 13 started to experience a series of problems that required quick actions and decisions to be made with the involvement of different sets of technical skills. Ultimately, by using the prototype and systems which NASA had established for Apollo 13, the teams managed to identify the problem, innovate a solution, and bring the astronauts back to Earth safely. As in the movie, launching a business successfully does not guarantee a smooth ride. This review seeks to unpack the importance of systemization as a business management process for business survival
Voter support for bond referenda: Does it matter if costs are presented as aggregate vs. personal costs?
We explore whether voters\u27 willingness to approve government spending in bond elections is affected by how costs are presented. Using an original survey experiment, we examine willingness to approve bonds, randomizing both the total cost of the bond and the framing of the cost as either a personal cost or an aggregate amount. We find that respondents are less supportive of bonds when the bond is framed as a personal expense and that respondents are more cost-responsive when they see personal costs. There is also substantial heterogeneity based on the respondent\u27s partisanship and the policy domain of the bond
Uncertainty of extreme wind and wave loads for marine renewable energy farms in hurricane-prone regions
The offshore wind industry is rapidly developing in a hurricane prone area off the US East Coast. For assessment of extreme environmental conditions, or hazard intensity measures, such as wind and wave loads (e.g., 50-year or 500-year wind speed) various methodologies including univariate (e.g., Generalized Extreme Value distribution; GEV) and multivariate (e.g., Inverse First Order Reliability Method, IFORM) analysis have been recommended. Further, due to lack of long-term observed data at a site, available observed/hindcast at nearby stations are commonly used which can lead to errors. The objective of this study is to better understand and quantify the level of uncertainty in extreme value analysis of wind/wave data for marine renewable energy sites in hurricane-prone regions. An area off the northeast of the US where several large projects have been planned was selected as a case study. Univariate and bivariate analyses of wind/wave data at several stations were carried out and results were compared. For this study, Bivariate (IFORM) and univariate (GPD) methods resulted in an average difference of 4% and 6% for extreme wind and wave data, respectively. It has been demonstrated that these discrepancies still fall within the 95% confidence intervals of the standard GEV method
Translation as Consciousness-Building in the Portuguese Lesbian Press (1990–2002)
The following article examines the political potential of the intimate, affective translation practices of Portuguese lesbian feminist activists in the publications Organa (1990–1992) and Lilás (1993–2002). Both publications, which I analyze through the rubric of the countercultural genre of “zine” or “fanzine,” arose in response to the repression and invisibilization that Portuguese lesbians faced, from criminalization and censorship at the hands of the fascist Estado Novo [New State] dictatorship (1933–1974) to exclusion from post-1974 feminist groups. Disconnected from any notion of lesbian identity and isolated from each other, the first lesbian activists turned toward experiences and connections abroad to build political consciousness. Using the self-published periodicals Organa and Lilás as their principal organizational tools, they could translate and circulate texts by lesbian feminist authors from countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. In doing so, they simultaneously created an open, egalitarian “lesbian-feminist counterpublic” (McKinney 2020, 19), allowing lesbians to meet each other on and between the publications’ pages through collaboration and expressions of desire. By analyzing the translational practices evident in the content, construction, and dissemination of Organa and Lilás, I identify and elaborate on a translation practice rooted in urgency, intimacy, and affectivity. Through the example of Portuguese lesbian feminism, I suggest that translation, far more than being a linguistic exercise or a transfer of information, has the capacity to be a tool for community-building and consciousness-raising, especially within groups that face marginalization and oppression

This session will provide background on the ACRL Information Literacy Standards and the Framework for Information Literacy, emphasizing the application of these skills to our current information landscape. The session will also cover current influences and effects of pandemic learning loss, the myth of the digital native, the availability of AI tools, and the influx of low-quality information on the learning landscape. Finally, participants will explore potential information literacy topics they can share with their users and identify ways to support them in developing their skills
Systematic literature review on parental involvement in digital education
Today it is generally known that digital tools suitable for enriching education can benefit and hinder teaching-learning. To understand the reasons behind students’ behavior, one must take an ecological approach to digital education. It would be misleading to think that only teachers experience difficulties; Digital education raises many questions and is the subject of constant debate, to which the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed significantly. In our systematic literature review, using the PRISMA model, we aimed to explore parental techniques and the degree of parental efficiency revealed by the literature on the digital education of children in families. After the multi-step screening, we finally examined 12 studies. The findings suggest that parents in digital education, acting as mediators, can be classified into groups fearing the consequences of digital tools, experiencing knowledge gaps, with an intersection of both apparent in literature. Parents express a need for support and assistance in digital education
Effect of nutrient reductions on dissolved oxygen and pH: a case study of Narragansett bay
To assess the consequences of nutrient reduction strategies on water quality under climate change, we investigated the long-term dynamics of dissolved oxygen (DO) and pH in Narragansett Bay (NB), a warming urbanized estuary in Rhode Island, where nitrogen loads have declined due to extensive wastewater treatment plant upgrades. We use 15 years (January 2005-December 2019) of measurements from the Narragansett Bay Fixed Site Monitoring network. Nutrient-enhanced phytoplankton growth can increase DO in the upper water column while subsequent respiration can reduce water column DO and enhance bottom water acidification, and vice-versa. We observed significant decreases in surface DO levels, concurrent with a significant increase in bottom DO, associated with the nitrogen load reduction. Surface DO decline was primarily attributed to reduced intensity of primary productivity, supported by a concurrent decrease in surface chlorophyll concentrations. Meanwhile, the influence of reduced organic matter respiration led to the increase of bottom DO levels by 9 µmol kg-1 (approximately 0.2 mg L-1 for typical summer temperature and salinity) over a 15-year period, which overcame the opposite influence of oxygen reduction from solubility decreases due to warming temperatures. In contrast, long-term changes in surface pH have not exhibited discernible trends beyond natural variability, likely due to the complex and sometimes opposing influences of biological activity and changing river flow conditions. We observed a slight increase in bottom pH, associated with the increase in DO in bottom water. Notably, future variations in freshwater discharge, particularly linked to extreme precipitation events, may further influence water carbonate chemistry and thereby impact pH dynamics. This study highlights the necessity of long-term time series measurements in helping understand the impacts of environmental management practices in improving water quality in coastal regions during a changing climate
