Emerging contaminants: A One Health perspective
Get PDFEnvironmental pollution is escalating due to rapid global development that often prioritizes human needs over planetary health. Despite global efforts to mitigate legacy pollutants, the continuous introduction of new substances remains a major threat to both people and the planet. In response, global initiatives are focusing on risk assessment and regulation of emerging contaminants, as demonstrated by the ongoing efforts to establish the UN’s Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste, and Pollution Prevention. This review identifies the sources and impacts of emerging contaminants on planetary health, emphasizing the importance of adopting a One Health approach. Strategies for monitoring and addressing these pollutants are discussed, underscoring the need for robust and socially equitable environmental policies at both regional and international levels. Urgent actions are needed to transition toward sustainable pollution management practices to safeguard our planet for future generations

Through the use of historical references, such as trench coats lined with flannel and the hoodie\u27s origin in Rochester, this presentation explained how specific materials, including wool, tweed, and down-filled jackets, contribute to the unique “New England Look. It also discussed how contemporary designers, such as Ralph Lauren and Tyler, The Creator, have adopted and reinterpreted this Ivy style with new materials and colors. Precision Enhancement in Sustained Visual Attention Training Platforms: Offline EEG Signal Analysis for Classifier Fine-Tuning
No full textIn this study, a novel open-source brain-computer interface (BCI) platform was developed to decode scalp electroencephalography (EEG) signals associated with sustained attention. The EEG signal collection was conducted using a wireless headset during a sustained visual attention task, where participants were instructed to discriminate between composite images superimposed with scenes and faces, responding only to the relevant subcategory while ignoring the irrelevant ones. Seven volunteers participated in this experiment. The data collected were subjected to analyses through event-related potential (ERP), Hilbert Transform, and Wavelet Transform to extract temporal and spectral features. For each participant, utilizing its extracted features, personalized Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF) models with tuned hyperparameters were developed. The models aimed to decode the participant\u27s attentional state towards the face and scene stimuli. The SVM models achieved a higher average accuracy of 80% and an Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.86, while the RF models showed an average accuracy of 78% and AUC of 0.8. This work suggests potential applications for the evaluation of visual attention and the development of closed-loop brainwave regulation systems in the future
Writing and Reviewing for Inclusion: Programs to Lift Library Worker Voices

Publishing and peer review are two core ways librarians can support each other in their work. After noticing an untapped opportunity to support library workers from across the spectrum of libraries who would like to publish or provide professional service in the field, a group of library workers established First Draft Matchmaker, a peer review program that pairs volunteer reviewers with writers for supportive and nonjudgmental feedback. This initiative supports library workers’ writing processes prior to submission for a journal, conference proposal, book chapter, or trade publication and encourages many voices to participate in the professional conversation. Writers from any type of library can take part in this program, with opportunities to begin their participation and engage at a time of year that best fits their schedule. This free, librarian-led service offers a more equitable opportunity for writers to give or receive feedback.Following the success of this program and inspired by feedback from peers, in 2023 we developed and launched a National Article Writing Month (NaArWriMo) program that supports writers as they work on their submissions. This support includes optional accountability partners, weekly Zoom writing sessions, and helpful weekly emails with calendars and playlist suggestions. Writers can also use the First Draft Matchmaker program to have additional support during this writing period.This poster will present data on how the First Draft Matchmaker and NaArWriMo programs began, the outreach and effect they’ve had with participants so far, and where they’re heading in the future. Learning Objectives: Upon completion, participants will be able to identify how they can receive support for their writing, provide support for other writers, or both. Upon completion, participants will be able to explore approaches to setting goals and celebrating milestones in their writing process. Effective Leader Practices to Leverage School Librarians as Leaders in One-to-One Computing
Get PDFResearch on one-to-one computing often overlooks the role of the school librarian even though they are trained with the knowledge and skills to effectively support technology initiatives. Using the Unified Model of Effective Leader Practices, this case study explored the intersection of leader practices, technology, and school librarians in a large district’s shift to one-to-one computing. The findings indicate that leader practices include: incorporating the library in the vision, building the professional capacity of school librarians, engaging them as partners in curriculum and instruction development, and leveraging their expertise to procure, create, and access quality digital resources to support learning in a digital environment
Ironic and Absurd Discourse of Dress and Appearance on Social Media
Get PDFThe purpose of this paper is to interpret how absurdity can be ironic through dress and appearance. By using two popular culture examples, one contemporary and one from the 1990’s, I look at how existential philosophies impact comparisons to society and how their reactions of dress and appearance can be ironic. This paper discusses Lee Alexander McQueen and Austin Babbitt (AssPizza) to find the intersection of irony, absurdism, social comparison, and dress and appearance. These two examples prove irony can be interpreted through an understanding of existentialism and how one views society and if they draw comparisons to their peers. McQueen and Babbitt–aligning with philosophers like Friedrich Nietzsche and Albert Camus–are unique as individuals within their respective practices, but aspects of their ideologies and irony can be seen across society today
