Slow Cook Off of Insensitive Munitions Test Final Design Report
The purpose of this capstone project is to create a device that can safely and accurately test the efficacy of an insensitive munition under constant thermal stress over a large period of time. Before the design of this capstone project the testing apparatus used by several branches of the military was not well thought out and often was made of materials found around the test site. This Capstone project brought a more analytical and effective approach to this problem to give a single slow cook off device that could be used universally for all applications of slow cook off testing.
This semester our capstone group worked to develop a prototype of what, through thorough research, could match the parameters of the project. The main parameters being that the oven must reach 500℃ at 15℃ intervals, could withstand that temperature while being permeable to lethal and non-lethal fragments from a reaction. As well as the insensitive munition not being in direct contact with the heating element.
So far our group has conducted concept generation, analysis of those concepts, design specifications, as well as a proof of concept and generated a prototype/model. In the next semester we plan to develop a working prototype as well as conduct more research into heating elements and more 3D modeling and analysis
Soap Dispensing Machine
Team 11 was the Soap Dispensing Machine project, sponsored by the nonprofit organization named The Everyday Eco-Warriors and Dr. Vinka Craver. The goal of the project is to innovate the current machine used in Mexico, the organization that created the machine named EcoTech, and to implement the newer model of the machine in a community in the United States. By creating a new machine that is more customizable, it can be implemented in communities around the world, which is why this is a collaborative project with a group in Ghana named KNUST. The goal of Team 11 is to increase the amount of people who use this machine, it can decrease the amount of plastic that is bought and entering landfills and that is the main objective of this project.
This goal was met by creating a powder dispenser that could be incorporated into the machine, which allows different communities to implement this machine in more locations. This element was created by following the design process which was research, creating the requirements list, brainstorming designs and concepts, competitive analysis, and developing the prototype in the first half. The second half, which was completed during the second semester, is the build, test, and redesign element portion of the design process in which the final draft of the product was created.
Through building, testing the product several times, and redesigning the powder dispenser, the final first iteration of this product was completed. This includes several CAD models, 3D printed models, and electrical components that were used to create the final product. Though the future of this project will continue, the development of this dispenser is a foundational change to help promote the incorporation of other types of soap. This project will be continuously expanded to incorporate bars of soap, other payment options, and other features that were not taken in account for
Height and Parallel Measurement Automation
The project aimed to develop an automated measurement device for precisely determining the height and parallelism of seals, addressing challenges in accurately measuring dimensions ranging from 0.56 inches to 5.74 inches in outer diameter. The device needs to achieve high accuracy and precision, meet stringent speed and power requirements, and fit within a compact space. The objectives were to streamline the measurement process, improve efficiency, and reduce reliance on manual labor.
Through iterative design processes, including 30 concepts and rounds of iterations, the team developed a prototype based on the motion and structure of a 3D printer. Utilizing Pugh analysis and guided lectures, the team identified the most promising concepts and refined them to create a sturdy and faster design. Testing and evaluation of the prototype provided insights into what worked and what required improvement.
The design process began with extensive research into automated measurement technologies, including literature and patent searches. Guided by Prof. Nassersharif\u27s lectures, the team established foundational understanding and conducted concept generation and evaluation. Prototyping involved CAD modeling, component selection, and iterative testing to validate design decisions. Collaborative teamwork and engagement with the Magseal team ensured alignment with critical requirements.
The final design incorporated modular components, high-quality materials, and precision machining to meet accuracy and reliability standards. Manufacturing involved machining acrylic and aluminum parts according to CAD drawings, assembly, and wiring. Rigorous testing validated performance against design specifications, leading to adjustments for optimal functionality. In summary, the project successfully delivered an automated measurement device meeting accuracy, speed, and size requirements. Through systematic design iterations, collaborative teamwork, and adherence to design principles, the team achieved the project objectives. The device offers significant potential for enhancing measurement efficiency and reliability in various industrial applications

Rivers of Language across Oceans: Review Essay of river in an ocean: Essays on Translation, edited by Nuzhat Abbas
This article presents an academic review of the collection of articles “on translation” and entitled river in an ocean. It engages with the foreword by Françoise Vergès and the introduction by editor Nuzhat Abbas, which set the tone of ‘decolonial feminism’ that permeates the essays. The reviews of the eleven essays—by women from southeast Asia, Africa, Palestine and Saudi Arabia—come from the perspective of feminist translation studies but pay careful attention to their very specific concerns around exile and life in diaspora
Transnationalizing Feminist Translation Studies? Insights from the Warwick School of Feminist Translation: A Roundtable
This roundtable article features a conversation among the five scholars who delivered keynotes at the Warwick School of Feminist Translation, held at the University of Warwick, UK, in May 2023: Olga Castro, Emek Ergun, Maud Anne Bracke, William J. Spurlin, and Luciana Carvalho Fonseca. Drawing on their uniquely interdisciplinary expertise on the politics of translation and interpreting, the authors explore the urgent role that translation and translators, as well as the fields and scholars of feminist and queer translation and interpretation studies, play in distrupting and dismantling heteropatriarchal, racist, homonationalist, and colonial regimes of power. Their conversations reveal the urgent need to decolonize intersectionally and globally and to transnationalize (and eventually denationalize) the feminist and queer praxes of translation beyond contemporary geopolitical, linguistic, institutional, and cultural borders; and also beyond normative binary regimes that largely demarcate the contemporary theories, actions, and future possibilities of feminist and queer translation. While doing that, the scholars unpack the notion of transnationality, which cannot be conceived without translation and lives a dynamic polysemic life in translation, yet remains an undertheorized term in much of contemporary scholarship, as the roundtable discussion attests. In exploring the intricate interplay between transnationality and translation (particularly in regard to processes of queer migrations, translocal coalitions, and feminist genealogies), the scholars invite further conversations on how Feminist Translation Studies can transnationalize, decolonize, and queer both the world and itself while operating within the disciplinary boundaries of the globalized neoliberal university
The role of new media literacy in shaping online learning satisfaction: Evidence from Egyptian universities
The pervasive adoption of online learning in educational systems worldwide has resulted in delivering this learning to digital natives, today’s university students. In this context, it is crucial to acknowledge the significance of students’ satisfaction in determining the success or failure of online learning. This study examines the impact of the four New Media Literacy (NML) dimensions on students’ satisfaction with online learning (SOL). A total of 640 university students from four universities in Egypt were included in the data collection process. The findings derived from structural equation modelling revealed that the four dimensions of (NML), namely functional consumption, critical consumption, functional prosumption, and critical prosumption, exhibited statistically significant and positive impacts on students’ (SOL). The primary determinant of students’ (SOL) was functional consumption. The results yield noteworthy practical implications for stakeholders involved in formulating strategic goals to enhance the efficacy of online courses
