Humanitarian Parole to the United States: The Case of a Gay Man Fleeing Afghanistan
This article will discuss my experience as an immigration attorney representing a gay man from Afghanistan fleeing the Taliban. First, it will give an overview of the Taliban’s role in Afghanistan and the Taliban takeover in August 2021. It will then discuss the treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals in Afghanistan. Next, the article will discuss how I became involved in representing individuals fleeing Afghanistan and the humanitarian parole process
Non-Partner Sexual Violence Among International College Students in the United States
The prevalence of non-partner sexual violence among college students is a pressing concern that demands urgent attention. Although an integral part of the education system, international college students are often underrepresented in various studies. This calls attention to understanding the cultural nuances and multiple factors affecting this population. The current research delves into the experiences of sexual abuse among international students within the last 12 months, focusing specifically on incidents where sexual penetration or unwanted sexual touching occurred without consent. The study sheds light on the frequency and demographics associated with these distressing incidents using data from a large-scale survey conducted over the past year, encompassing a sample size of 13,242 international student respondents. Results reveal alarming statistics, with a substantial proportion of international students reporting experiences of non-partner sexual violence. Specifically, 4.8% of participants reported being sexually touched without consent, 1.9% reported attempted sexual penetration without consent, and 1.6% reported actual sexual penetration or being made to penetrate someone without consent. Moreover, the analysis indicates significant associations between experiences of sexual abuse and key demographic variables such as gender, relationship status, and number of sexual partners. Further exploration through univariate regression unveils compelling insights into the intersectionality of sexual violence, highlighting disparities based on biological sex, relationship status, and number of sexual partners among international students. The present study underscores the urgent need for comprehensive prevention and intervention strategies to address the pervasive issue of non-partner sexual violence among international college students. By understanding the dynamics of these incidents and their correlates, institutions can tailor support services, advocacy efforts, and educational initiatives to create safer and more inclusive environments for all international students
American Manufacturing: Orders not Subsidies
Charlie Merrow is the 6th generation CEO of The Merrow Group Companies. He took over the family business in 2004, and he revitalized the company through strategic diversification, turning it into a dynamic force in the textile and manufacturing industry. He introduced ActiveSeam, the first branded monetized stitch. Charlie has redefined what a heritage brand can be, emphasizing the importance of adaptability, diversification, and staying ahead of technologies like AI and automation. He believes these will bring back manufacturing to the U.S. and offers advice to fashion and textile students that to succeed in this industry, they should start by understanding the basics of how textiles are made because knowing the basics can lead to revolutionary breakthroughs
The Jewelry Industry in New England
Kara Brennan, a Rhode Island native and URI alum, offered students a compelling look into New England’s historically rich jewelry industry. She discussed the industry\u27s decline due to overseas production shifts in the 1990s and its subsequent adaptation through intermediary roles and new markets. She shared how evolving fashion trends, sustainability demands, and market shifts have influenced both design and production processes. Brennan emphasized the continued relevance of Rhode Island’s jewelry sector and the strategic approaches necessary for success in today’s global fashion landscape

NASA Centrifugal Nuclear Thermal Rocket
This capstone project aimed to design the hydrogen passageways flowing through the Centrifugal Nuclear Thermal Rocket (CNTR). The primary objective was to model an efficient hydrogen path that would ensure optimal heat management and propellant flow. The team created a Solidworks model of the reactor bank, incorporating a moderator block with internal passageways for hydrogen. The top turnaround region was designed to guide gas from the reactor’s outer wall into the turbine, while the shuriken structure at the base ensured each reactor unit had an independent cooling supply.
Using simulation results and analysis, the team developed a modular design that provides the most efficient hydrogen supply to each centrifugal fuel element (CFE). A physical model of a single modular CFE was created to showcase fluid flow and demonstrate the modular system’s feasibility. This modular design allows future engineers to modify or replace individual sections without disrupting the entire system, offering a flexible and scalable solution. The team is confident that this work provides a robust foundation for future research in heat transfer and effective fluid supply pathing, helping advance the CNTR concept
