Toxicokinetics and Perfluorooctanesulfonic Acid-Induced Liver Protein Expression Are Markedly Altered in Mice Lacking Albumin
Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) is a ubiquitous perfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) linked to liver disease and obesity in humans. Binding studies suggest that albumin is a crucial blood protein influencing PFOS toxicokinetics and hepatotoxicity; however, its role has not been mechanistically tested in vivo. This study used an albumin-deficient mouse model to investigate the relevance of albumin in PFOS tissue distribution and liver disease end points. Adult male C57BL/6J wild-type (Alb+/+) and albumin-deficient (Alb–/–) mice were orally gavaged daily for 7 days with either vehicle or PFOS at 0.5 or 10 mg/kg body weight. The measured PFOS concentrations in plasma were significantly lower in Alb–/– mice compared to those in Alb+/+ mice, while liver concentrations were significantly higher in Alb–/– mice. Binding experiments confirmed these findings, indicating that PFOS toxicokinetics are driven by plasma and tissue binding. Significant changes in liver protein expression did not translate into differences in liver disease end points between genotypes, suggesting the need for chronic exposure studies. Our data imply that disease-related albumin deficiency in humans can influence PFAS toxicokinetics and susceptibility to hepatotoxicity. Our framework using knockout mice can be adapted in future studies to assess the relevance of protein binding and membrane transporters in PFAS distribution and elimination.

Media literacy in language (teacher) education. Introductory remarks from the guest-editors
This editorial sketches the conceptual foundations for this special issue on media literacy in language (teacher) education. It contextualises this special issue’s focus on language (teacher) education with critical media literacy theory, highlighting the special role of language education in media literacy development both in terms of the subject’s methodology and goals. With its inherent focus on texts and media, language education pursues the goal of empowering learners to become active participants in global – oftentimes digital – discourses. Providing a frame for the contributions to this special issue, this introduction echoes calls for an already observable shift in language (teacher) education, moving beyond technologically-enhanced or computerassisted language learning and towards critical approaches to media literacy in the language classroom. Increasingly, scholars and practitioners are exploring ways to conceptualize and practice (foreign) language learning within digitality rather than about or with digital media, including the contributions to this special issue
Exiting Commercial Sexual Exploitation
This study presents one of the largest qualitative samples of exited female survivors of commercial sexual exploitation in the United States to date. One hundred and eighty-nine female survivors participated in a national survey. The participants described their motivations for exiting commercial sexual exploitation, the pathways they followed, the forces that hindered their exit and increased their recidivism, and the assistance they received that ensured a permanent exit. Some of the findings challenge popular narratives on recidivism rates and what keeps women in exploitation, revealing complex relational, behavioral, economic, and systemic influences. Participants spoke about the unanticipated value of incarceration, their need for improved communications about services and immediate supports, the role of spiritual forces, and their positive regard for the practice of “rescue.” Findings offer actionable guidance on how to invite and encourage victims to pursue and achieve permanent exit from commercial sexual exploitation
Multicore SPION Clustering within Poly(amino acid) Corrals for Enhanced MRI Contrast and Drug Release
Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle (SPION) clusters produce localized magnetic field inhomogeneities that enhance negative contrast in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It is shown that high transverse relaxivity (r2) can be obtained by clustering hydrophobic SPIONs with an average core diameter of ≈7 nm via self-assembly with amphiphilic polyethylene glycol-b-poly(L-Leucine) block copolymers, PEGn-b-p(L-Leu)m, where the PEG chains are terminated by methoxy (CH3O-PEGn) or hydroxyl groups (HO-PEGn). Clusters ranging from 65 to 85 nm in diameter are formed by polymer coating and stabilization of hydrophobic SPION aggregates and yield high r2 values ranging from 226 to 342 s−1 mm Fe−1 with negligible longitudinal relaxivity (r1) and high saturation magnetization near that of bulk maghemite. Polymer composition determines the critical micelle concentrations, notably the length of the hydrophobic segment, and the extent of hydrophobic drug loading. However, it does not significantly impact the size of the SPION cluster assemblies, their magnetic relaxivity, or their drug release, whether passive or during pulsed, intermittent magnetic stimulation. This work demonstrates that the self-assembled amphiphilic block copolymer-based micelles can be used to enhance the colloidal and magnetic relaxivity behavior of SPION clusters while providing variable drug loading and the opportunity for end-group functionalization
Research Advances on Foreign Portfolio Investments: A Bibliometric and Thematic Analysis
Foreign portfolio investments have been at the center of research in the finance, economics, and international business domains since the early 1990s when developing economies started to relax their capital account and allowed the entry of foreign investments. Over the years, various macroeconomic (country-specific and global), firm-specific, and quality factors have been studied as determinants in relation to these flows, Still, there is no consensus regarding which factor influences more than the others. This paper uses bibliometric analysis to understand the existing literature to build a solid conceptual base in this research topic. For this study, bibliometric data of 731 articles and reviews from 1991-2022 were extracted from the Scopus database, and bibliometric procedures were applied. First, performance analysis is conducted on the basis of chronological and spatial distribution, influential documents, journal productivity, and eminent authors. Second, scientific mapping on co-citation and keyword occurrence with VOSviewer is done, followed by the thematic content analysis. The study concludes with a discussion on the outcomes of the applied procedures and sheds light on the future scope of research
